Yep this was on the news just now its a great idea by HM guvvermint.

We know where the freaking things are, have they got any ideas how they are going the fill the damm things what sort of intellegentice does that take?.

Ooh, you nearly tripped me up there and got me talking politics

From a prioritisation point of view, it could better allocate resources. I don't see what else it could be utilised for in this context  :unknown:

Monies better spent on AI finding Ho's

This smacks to me of jumping on a bandwagon.

The problem isn't identifying where potholes are. Residents near me constantly report them to the council. The problem is the council doing something about it.

It reminds me of a few years back when drones was the latest trend and there were talks of deliveries being made to households by drones.....utter BS.

I'm not even sure that a lot of the tech being labelled "AI" is in fact AI at all. It is just programmed software, the same as has been for decades..

Isn't AI when the computer is supposed to think for itself??

I think perhaps some context is needed here. This relates to a pot hole prevention 'robotic' system in development and testing during the last two years' which identifies minor surface issues and repairs them before they develop into potholes.

Money is the problem,  they'll spend money on AI but not actually on a repair team.

Online RandomGuy99

I think the solution is having the roads built properly in the first place and then having the repairs done correctly too. We need to adapt to climate change and if we're going to have colder winters then concrete roads like in the UK might be harder wearing and quicker to fix. Just dig out the hole and put some more concrete in.

AI is quite energy intensive, I know the government's plan covers this, but given we pay through the nose for energy. We are going to have to be creative and get building - but this country struggles to build anything

A pothole near me was fixed just before xmas, it's already back to where it was before it was 'fixed'

Thanks Doc and I'm sure there is greater context to it but it doesn't seem to pass the common sense test in my opinion.

Judging by that link, these "robots" look like a full sized vehicle. They would require a fleet of these to travel up and down the country, scanning EVERY road and presumably closing roads too to allow the robot to do it's work. The robot would require human supervision which makes me wonder isn't it easier to simply continue with the current system??

This is true and is a huge issue. Uk has the highest energy costs of any developed nation.

There are places where drones are making deliveries. In Rwanda there is a large scale operation delivering medicines.  Amazon are using them in some countries.

However are we likely to see scale usage in uk in say next 10 years? I doubt it.

NOT NECESSARILY TRUE

Where I live you need AI to find a route to town missing potholes.

I'm sure they are using them in Rwanda. It might be feasible in places which are not densely packed with people and buildings

To add to that, Gas wise we are quite a bit cheaper than a lot of places...

In the context of AI it’s industrial electricity prices that are most relevant, not domestic gas or domestic electricity

Our number one status was widely reported a few months ago.

but you didn't quantify your observation in such specific context

If Evri start using drones to deliver parcels your parcel will be dropped from a great height into a neighbours garden three houses along  from where you live  :dash:

Ok, true.  But is the context not given by the subject of the thread?

They would need AI to control the airspace above London!

The term is “AI washing “ , for the most part is utter bollocks.
As you say a key fundamental of AI is the ability to learn and evolve.
Most are just people trying to jump on band waggon most don’t understand.
