Author Topic: Find My Location / Device  (Read 1470 times)

Hey guys, reaching out for advice how to handle this functionality on the phone! I did talk a bit about this in the off topics, but feel there is more exposure on this part of the forum.

Find my location on my iphone is currently off, but recently we've been talking about turning it on within the family. Although I've staved it off for a bit (by pretending to be really interested in what i'm doing .... ), i feel i need to turn this on very soon, or things will become suspicious if I don't.

Regardless of a punting phone, I will always have my personal phone with me when i'm out and about. I don't drive, so how can i stop my tracks being found when i'm on public transport. Is going in aeroplane mode enough to hide my tracks? Does it show where you have been when you come back online?

Can the tech savvy and vets advise, cheers!    :drinks:

Unless you have kids to keep an eye on, depending on whos suggesting, they may be suspicious anyway ?

It can be turned on and off at will so you could try doing this if you want. If they say they couldnt find you when you do then I would suggest they are paying more attention to your movements than they should be in a niormal relationship.

It’s amazing to think we all actually managed to get through the day without having a mobile phone in our pocket.  :D

Get a punting phone. When you leave the house knowing you will be having a punt………… forget to take your personal phone with you. 🤷🏼

To be quite frank. I’m not in a situation where I need to be tracked so to speak. If I was……… I’d be asking just why on earth I need be.

Do you have any other apple devices? An iPad or even an old iPhone? You can set that alternative device to be the device that reports your location.

How useful this is depends on your punting plans but if your usual excuse is to be at the golf club or at work, you could head to to that excuse location, switch to the alternative device reporting your location, leave that device there, then head on to your punt. Then as you head home switch the reporting device back to your main iPhone.

I know this might not work for everyone but I hope its helpful.

The wife and kids can see where my phone is all the time, though I doubt they will be monitoring me constantly..

I leave my iPhone in the car a street away as not to give away the exact location I’m at.

Don’t turn the sharing location on/off as it gives alerts “ xyz has stopped sharing their location” which would be even more suspicious.

I’m not entirely sure how just leaving your phone in the car a street away makes and kind of difference.

I would be thinking along the lines of “I thought you were going to a hospital appointment today. Why on earth were you in Milton Keynes”  :D

I’ve never once been quizzed to where I am but I leave the phone a street away as many “Thai massage (b2b) from homes” have been added to google maps with their advert/ website info.

I can explain if ever questioned for the area but if I’m showing at ding dongs massage it might be a bit more difficult  :lol

Depending on the time of your escape go to a local bar. Ask them if they can charge your main phone whilst you take care of something, main phone will be safe and fully charged on your return. Obviously buy a drink!

The main problem i see is that, in normal circumstances, its all positive and "no negatives" and hard to argue why to leave it off if bought up. If you lost your phone ... if you forget to call one evening ... i know when to start cooking dinner .... There's really no negatives. Also agree that i most times, should wouldn't be checked. but the i think the main problem is, that when kids are checked for location, it also shows mine and they are checked more often.

What about just going airplane instead of turning it off, will that work? Say for 45 mins, turn it off and then back on again. Would it know you was in the 45 mins?

I have find my device turned on but don’t share the location with anyone

The Find My Friends function that I assume OP is referring to so that his partner can see his location, reports his location for a specific device, you can change what device reports your location without anybody getting a notification. So switching to another device will then mean you can move with your iPhone to wherever you want unmonitored while your second device reports your location wherever you leave it.

I believe if you turn off location sharing in settings for all apps, it doesn’t notify people.  That’s something I do regularly, and never had an issue so far

There is a recent change to this feature where the phone will still show your location even when it’s switched off.

When I first saw this pop up as I was about to head out, I nearly shit myself thinking what to do.
From now on, I’ll be leaving my normal phone at home ‘by mistake’ when going out.
