Author Topic: What phone is everyone using these days?  (Read 1788 times)

Offline Darren101

No, not the punting phone.   The day to day phone.  iPhone or Android?

If Android, what brand?

My main phone is an iPhone 15 Pro Max. I have airpods and bits which work well with it although I'm not that into Mac computers. I think Apple is just more secure but guessing some people may disagree in favour of Android.

Any neat phone features or apps you rely on?

(I do also use Android but secondary devices. Bought a Google Pixel 8 Pro as just curious about how good they are).

P.S. you could tell us what your punting phone is. I have a Xiaomi Pocco for that.

Got the Google Pixel 7a in November - conscious downgrade from one of the flagship androids to a mid-price model.  I think I got it for about £380 in a Black Friday sale.  It’s absolutely fine for me as I certainly don’t need the high end features of the flagship phones.  It’s easy to set up and use, screen is bright and clear, battery life seems good - would definitely recommend as a mid to low price option.

A Samsung S21 Ultra. I love the optical x 10 zoom on it and photos are great

I use an old Samsung phone and pay £10 a month for pay as you go SIM.

Offline Darren101

I buy my phone outright as I can’t stand to see expensive mobile contract DDs coming out of my account each month. Got cheap SIM only plan.   I use a lot of data so PAYG sounds like a painif not using GiffGaff and I don’t get good signal with them in doors at home or at work.

I have a Samsung Z Fold 4, I love the big screen, it's great for work stuff, taking and viewing pictures, watching YouTube videos. I had a Fold 2 previously, I don't think I could ever go back to a regular phone.

My punting phone is a 3-4 year old Huawei Android, I think it's a high end model. I'm not sure how much it cost, or what model it is, I'll have a look next time I boot it up.

Before that I had an Honor Android that I bought from Argos for I think about £80, that was a great phone for the money.

Is that the most recent S. sung fold type ? Do you know how the spec compares with the equivalent standard shape top end one?

Offline Darren101

My Pixel 8 pro is actually replacing a Samsung Fold 2.  Nice to open up when I want a tablet-like screen size for watching netflix but I don't really open it up that much. I don't like the screen width when it's closed (too narrow) and that's how I've used it most of the time.  I also don't like the bulk in my pocket when it's folded. It's quite heavy also but I've gotten used to the weight.  I sitll do like the idea of a foldable and would go back.

I believe the Fold 5 is the current one but I've not used one. I hear it's faster, lighter, more robust and more waterproof. Someone with a newer model can advise how it compares.

The 5 is the current version. It's virtually no different to my 4 except the hinge is fractionally thinner. Even my 4 isn't massively different to the 2 that I had.

It's close in spec to the S24 Ultra.

I use my open most of the time,  closed is convenient when I'm out somewhere e.g. walking,  paying contactless, using the camera, talking.

even to this day it's the most amazing phone I've ever used.  It could hold charge for waht seemed like ages and could pick up a signal absolutely anywhere - a bonker brilliant phone.

Now i'm tied in to the apple ecosystem, but even that is getting to the point where my 8plus is getting long in the tooth and I'm probably going to have to pony up on a new one and pay my apple tax at some point.

I've still got my 8plus, what a cracking phone it is. It's such a nice shape and slide in your pocket really easy.  Sadly the memory seems too be overloaded as it's painfully slow. I use it for my drone controller now, as my Fold doesn't fit in the cradle.

Just got an IQOO 12, works great with Google service.

Ah, yeah, that’s one of my other complaints with the Fold.  It doesn’t fit in most cradles or phone holdersor magnetically attach to anything so I couldn’t use it as a satnav in the car properly. Also, Don’t know if thy’ve improved since but the camera on the Fold 2 is shite (even compared with an iPhone 12 Pro i was using).

The camera results on a Samsung compared to an iPhone are just "different", I don't think one is noticeably better or worse, they're just different. I think it depends on the user and what they like.

The 4 has wide angle mode, which the 2 didn't have.

There are plenty of mounts for the Fold series. I don't a mount as my car has a nice "cubby hole" in the dash and it plugs in via USB to the car and displays on the car main screen using Android Auto.

Because of the weight it doesn't work with my DJI Gimbal, whereas the S8+ does.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.  I find it a fantastic phone. The camera is awesome. At a recent concert in Wembley,  sitting as far from the stage as possible, I was still able to soom in and recognise Lzzy Hale on stage!!!

I took a picture of a wall mounted speaker to zoom in on the brand badge (I have crap eyesight so couldn’t read it). Took a pic with the Fold 2 and it was blurry and illegible.  Took it with my iPhone 12 and looked great.  Same results with other tests. I don’t think they bothered with putting in a good camera back then and just focused on the form factor. Probably saving it for the Ultra phones. Normal pics were fine but found Iphone pics superior.  If I had the S whatever Ultra at the time, it would probably fair better.

would that be an Apple or Android device?   :)

Although I have always been an iPhone fan. I bought a Motorola from Argos for £110 to punt with and I am literally amazed at how good it is especially the screen. It really has made me think hard as to what i get when my iPhone fails.

A couple of points - I don't normally use the camera but I think it might be a weakness. Also I'm not sure if it will be as secure as an apple iPhone. Maybe a techie guy would know ?

A friend was using an iPhone and the pictures were always really fuzzy, especially if there was sunlight reflection.

I had a look at the phone and noticed that there was a piece of plastic that was covering the lens and was part of the protective case (it was only supposed to be there as part of the original moulding, not permanently).

The quality improved instantly when I removed it
