It's ok, we don't have the equipment to have a conscript Army.

You'd have to break out SLRs and other old kit that might be held in a warehouse somewhere but they probably don't have the ammunition for them.

Offline MLawro93

Our ammo stocks wouldn't last a week with our current forces. No point.  This is actually official as well, we learned this through our recent NATO wargames.

There was a series following Royal Marines through training, some of the recruits were so dim they had to be taught how to wash properly ie behind the foreskin. Not been punting one would think.

Offline Blackpool Rock

Ironic that years ago people rushed to the recruiting office to sign up before a war was over and they had next to fuck all to lose

Despite a seemingly daily news article about how people are living in poverty or a fly buzzing in their rented flat paid for by housing benefit has affected their mental health and wellbeing people these days have a damn sight more than they did years ago

Sign up would be poor these days and IMO it would also be hard to conscript as so many would either dodge or try to dodge it and that's before you get into whether or not they are actually fit enough to actually do it due to being an obese fat fucker

I can see why people would resist as these days we are aware of the full horrors of war whereas years ago they were lied to and told it was a jolly jape well at least WW1, for WW2 it was clear to most what Hitler was doing and that basically we were next
However even if there was a direct risk to the UK I just don't see that a lot of people would actually give a fuck

I don't think the mamby pambys today would last 8 years in a Foreign legion type environment,  they want everything for nothing. Not wishing to be political on this topic but our government can't even look after the ghurkas who serve our country.  :unknown:

You only need to look back to the early days of the covid-19 pandemic  when mask-wearing in shops was mandatory,  to see how many didn't comply, claiming all sorts of (unprovable) exemptions.

I am going to be the awkward one here and disagree. Our generation always runs down the young and that would have been the same before both world wars. But when required they step up and get the job done. Usually it is the leaders from our generation that are fucking useless.

I suspect the Ukrainian youngster were similar to ours and they have joined up and kicked Putin where it hurts, at huge cost to themselves.

I think it very much depends on how much skin we have in the game.

If the UK was under direct threat or attack (probably only the latter to be honest) then yes, you may be right but I very much doubt we'd see youngsters volunteer or willingly join up otherwise.

Patriotism is dead in this country. Maybe pride isn't but patriotism sadly is.

Have you met any old people lately? You know, the ones that fucked up this country?

I have the good fortune of working with young people (both in paid and unpaid/voluntary capacity) who are clever, hard working and extremely resilient who have inherited a shit load of crap that us older people have left for them. Yet despite that they give me a lot of hope for this country.  I am also father of young adults who have surpassed my wildest expectations and have made me very proud to be the father of incredible young adults.

I agree with RedKettle that I think you're generalising your negative opinion on young people a bit too much based on a small number of loud idiots whilst the silent majority just get on with work.

I also find it very sad that sensationalist tabloids continually portray young people in a very negative light.

At least we will have the best trained Dads Army/ Home Guard. Anyone in their 50s or early 60s that has done their 22 will have most likely served in Bosnia,  Kosovo,  Kuwait,  Northern Ireland,  Iraq and possibly Afghanistan.  They will all be well trained and as long as they  can get help to get up off the ground as their knees are fucked it will be all good

I know of quite a few lads in their early 20's who are in steady relationships, have worked hard to get decent jobs, own their own houses and drive better cars than me, or are you going to tell me I don't.   :unknown:

It's narrow minded and possibly foolish to generalise about any group of people in society, there's lazy scroungers of all ages just as there are hard workers of all ages.

Completely agreed.  I work with some young entrepreneurs and they are incredible.  The ideas they have blow my mind and their energy and work ethic is off the scale.  I am quite sure that a few of them will be financially very well off by the time they are 30, all their own doing.

That huge cost is basically the demographic destruction of Ukraine when you look at the numbers of men across all age ranges. Whatever the outcome of that conflict it will be interesting to observe the social and economic impact of what will no doubt be a lot of Western investment to support rebuilding physical infrastructure but it's going to be a very women biased population so without labour migration and fertility rates going up you won't necessarily see economic growth beyond servicing war debt.

In the UK there is a diminishing positive sentiment towards institutions like the armed forces because people generally don't like signing up to fight in unjust wars that uphold the global American empire. If the VDV were parachuting into Piccadilly Gardens that's one thing, getting in a truck because Russian man doing something in his back yard? No thanks.

Biden, Sunak and Zelensky can get in the ring for a tag team match against Putin, more entertaining and less blood spilt.

Wonder how the youths of today, and the ones who go about with knives, and act so tough, how would they cope if they were conscripted.   If conscripted more likely they wont be together, and mixed with other persons.

Now as for how they handle this, would they be able to cope with killing someone, like a Russian soldier, and how do they deal with when one of their conscripts gets his head blown off

Online RandomGuy99

Perhaps they could appoint Boris as commander in chiet of the conscript army?

There was a series some 15/20 years ago called 'bad lads army '. Where modern youths of the time were put through some 1950's style conscription exercises.... Made a few series of this, narrated by Dennis Waterman.
As would be expected, some were pony, some excelled and went on to join the regular army.

In 1900 life expectancy in England was 39 and there are plenty of tails of recruiting officers being horrified by the very low quality and poor health of potential recruits, for e.g. the Boer war.
