iPhone 11’s are not worth it because it’s their 5th year of release this year and because iPhones only have software support for 6 years. Next year the latest iOS software will no longer offer any support to the iPhone 11. I’d still go for the iPhone SE 2020 version.. Plus you can buy a refurbished one for just over £100 online.

Apple are scheduled to stop supporting the iPhone 11 in September 2029.

It went off sale in September 2022 after which time it will be supported for 7 years.

But is apple really that much more secure and private ? Any proof anywhere at all other than their (Apple’s) multi million marketing operation?

Google makes money by selling your personal details to advertisers. What do you think?

Who's paying you to say that, Apple?

It's always best to check your information, or at least add some proof for such a claim.

We don’t sell your personal information to anyone
We use your personal information to make our products more helpful to you. It’s how we can auto-complete your searches, get you home faster with Maps, or show you more useful ads based on your interests. But we never sell your personal information to anyone, and you can use many of our products without signing in or saving any personal information at all.

When we show ads, advertisers pay us either for the placement of an ad – like a banner at the top of a web page – or for how an ad actually performs – like when someone clicks on it. Advertisers do not pay us for personal information, such as your name or email, and we never share that information with advertisers, unless you ask us to. We also never use your emails, documents, photos or sensitive information like race, religion or sexual orientation, to personalise ads to you. We share reports with our advertisers to help them understand the performance of their ads, but we do so without revealing any of your personal information. At every point in the process of showing you ads, we keep your personal information protected with industry-leading security technologies.

Marketing fluff. They have to say that or they would go out of business. Their entire business model is targeted advertising. Their ad revenue is the largest in the word at more than $220 billion. Ask a Data Scientist if it possible to anonymise data.

Google is fantastic at some stuff - much better than Apple at AI for example. Apple excels at hardware because they have such high average selling prices they can afford to spend more on it.

Can I ask you gents a question. Could any cheap iPhone or a second hand one that is compatible with the current iOS make a good burner phone? I have an old crappy battered Sony Erickson from 2009 and I wanna buy a smartphone as a burner phone but I am too much into iPhones and not into Android phones.

Why do you need a smartphone as your burner/punting phone? Seems like a waste of money to me.

Targeted advertising isn't the same as selling your personal data (your words) which without permission, is illegal.

Tell me what company doesn't have marketing fluff, Apple are the best at it.

As I explained in my post it amounts to the same thing. Google know this better than anyone as they have the world's best AI - which I have praised them for many times on this forum.

And yes every company does marketing fluff, but in this case, Google, it is about monetizing your personal information which is their entire business model. (Yes there are other bits but ad revenue is their major).

Apple are no better, they just do a better job with their marketing to convince you that they are angels.

Apple's business model is to lock you in to their Hardware and Software Eco System and App Store, you don't have a choice.

Also, Apple are pushing out contextual ads based on all of your collected data.

"Apple’s ad targeting information says I am included in segments based on my age (from my date of birth), my gender (which may be inferred if I have not told Apple), and location (based on my registered postcode). Apple also listed my interests broadly as 10 different categories for apps—including productivity, sport, news, and business. For movies, I am included in the Action and Adventure category, as well as Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

The company’s documentation also says that App Store “browsing activity” is also used to help determine ads that can be shown to you. “App Store browsing activity includes the content and apps you tap and view while browsing the App Store. This information is aggregated across users so that it does not identify you,” the company’s documents say.

This data has the potential to be extensive. “Everything is monitored and sent to Apple almost in real time,” says Tommy Mysk, an app developer and security researcher who runs the software company Mysk with fellow developer Talal Haj Bakry. In November, the Mysk researchers demonstrated how taps on the screen were logged when using the App Store. Their follow-up research demonstrated that analytics data could be used to identify people."

“The App Store is special because there’s no other option,” Mysk says."

The research has resulted in two class actions against Apple. Separately, France’s data regulator has fined Apple for its advertising practices.

I could write a long post but, come off it ...

Google is an ad company. It plays fast and loose with your personal information because that is its business model.

Apple's schtick is to sell an illusion of luxury to a mass market. Sharing personal info on the scale that Google does would destroy its business model. So, out of self interest it doesn't do it.

Any gadget always work perfectly with another gadget or device off the same manufacturer. My cousin who owns a Samsung S23 ultra purchased some Galaxy buds and they paired perfectly just like the way iPhones do with their AirPods.

I also bought a Sony soundbar for my Sony tv and it works easily with the same tv remote where as if I purchased a different soundbar bar from another manufacturer or brand like Bose or Sonus then I would be needing to use a separate remote control rather then my Sony tv remote.

Another example of being tied into the eco system are Epsom printers because if the ink cartridges run out ink you can only use Epsom own ink cartridges and not any third party ones otherwise the printer would not accept them.

I think they’re both big corporations who want our money, and are good at getting it.. and that claiming to be really keen to keep our things private is a good marketing tactic.

Again Is there any proof apple can live up to their claims anywhere compared with what google can offer. I’ve not seen any.

That why you should ditch Google as your search engine and browser and use Duck Duck Go instead. It's easy to configure your phone to do this. No more Google or Apple pushing targeted ads at you across devices.

For android, Brave browser is very good for privacy and security together with Safari, if configured correctly.

Tell you the truth fellas I am feeling tempted to move away from iPhones and go to Samsung. Last year I was looking to upgrade from my iPhone 12 to the iPhone 15 but I hate that Dynamic Island design and I was reading an article about the leaks for the iPhone 16 and apparently. They’re still keeping the Dynamic Island design for that phone and probably on the iPhone 17 as well next year. Also the base iPhone 15 costs nearly £800 and it only has the 60hz refresh rate screen where as the Samsung base S23 and S24 has 120hz refresh rate screen :dash:

This is why I am getting fed up with Apples lazy design features and feel tempted to move to Samsung. Has anyone ever moved from iPhones to Android phones and was the data transfer process quite simple and was anyone able to get use to Android system easily after leaving iOS?

Yes, and back again several times as I've regularly used both. Remember Samsung isn't android, there are many other manufacturers of Android devices. I'd recommend at least looking at a Pixel, which is the 'iPhone' of the Android world in that you get Google's version of Android without any duplicate apps and services that Samsung will give you.

I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max and a Pixel 8 Pro.  I must say, so far after 1 week, I'm liking the Pixel.  The built in keyboard is better than the iPhone one. Performance is good.  Have had the iPhone 15 since release date.

I don't mind the Dynamic Island. Didn't like the notch on my iPhone 12. Never been bothered about screen refresh rates.

Bought the Pixel from CeX and it was only £790 (A grade).  iPhone was 1399 as it's the 500GB one.

As for Sammy, can't comment on the current selection.  Been using a Fold2  before the pixel.  It was easy to switch  from iPhone to the Pixel.  I think they are all ready to switch back and forth these days as they want you to move to their brand/platform.  Used to be a nightmare to migrate but those days are gone.  Recommend banking apps and birs might be ol the only annoying thing if they need more security steps
