Many years ago I worked in insurance, and often used DVLA to track down guys who had run into cars insured by our company where the driver had "forgotten" to leave details. (Mind you.. I know from mates that still work in industry that a fair few "forgetful" drivers use fake plates now.)

Yeah I know now, I didn't read the whole thread.  Just from my have experience of being on the phone with them and my insurance company, having to give the DVLA permission to tell my insurance co. my details.  Probably just the insurance company's little way of making it harder for you to comply and give them a possible excuse not to pay out.
