Just seen the news that Roger Corman has died, aged 98. Known as the king of B movies, his influence was far greater than that, he often spotted up and coming talent earlier than most.

* My own personal favourite Corman film was The Intruder made in 1962, with a young William Shatner. A classic low budget cinematic gem, still worth a watch in 2024.

I've only ever seen 'The Trip', which we went to a showing of quite high ourselves so I don't remember much of it.

Larry Clark remade his 'Teenage Caveman' in a more porno/straight to DVD way (forgettable for different reasons but some great racks).

Too be fair I think you would have to be high to sit through it now, it hasn't aged well like a lot of druggy movies from the sixties, although there are exceptions.

Yeah, same here, they used a lot of local actors and comedians as well as all filmed locally. Even had George Best on at one stage filmed at Appleby Park, the home of North Shields football club.

John Conteh, Geoff Capes and Billy Connolly were among others who made guest appearances.

No, Gudrun Ure was Scottish but it was set in a fictional town in the NE. Tyne Tees Television produced the series and it was filmed mainly in an old warehouse in North Shields and on location in Earsdon, near Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Lumley Castle and Beamish Museum. Plus too many Geordie accents for it to be set in Scotland.

Also has Shatner playing it straight and surprisingly good looking. Honestly Star Trek killed his reputation as a serious actor, but maybe he made more money for being camp. The Intruder is great.

The Trip was influential in music in that it's been sampled loads of time.

Ah ok. I did used to watch it back in the day but my memory is hazy regarding it. I knew super gran was Scottish as you say and there were some Scottish influence such as Billy Connolly singing the theme tune so that’s where I’m getting my wires crossed.  :hi:

Was reading a twitter discussion recently where it came up, that it was very much 60s in feel e.g. decor, dress sense, vocab etc. This was in relation to the film 'Go', which it said was similarly very 90s on all those points compared to other 90s films.

Sharkey was a nice guy
Met him a few times, we were both roped in during sheep shearing on one of the local farms. I think it gave him a dose of normality - relief after the intensity of flying

As for landing the SHAR at the BBC - it was actually in the quadrangle at the middle of the Birmingham Pebble Mill studios
If it hadn't been for him, the SHAR would not have been ready for the Falklands

Yeah, not forgetting the great Doddie Weir the Scottish international Rugby Union player who also had this terrible condition  and passed away in 2022. There seems to be few more Rugby players who are suffering early symptoms of this. Most live only a couple of years after being diagnosed with it. Kevin Sinfield ( a man who has raised millions  by running marathons and ultra marathons is planning another fund raising event in December to raise more money to fund research in finding a cure for MND) Even if you are not into Rugby League his autobiography " Kevin Sinfield the extra mile" is worth a read 👏  with many chapters dedicated telling of his friendship with his team mate Rob Burrow and how he ran 7 marathons in 7 days

The BBC have covered this story really well and brought a massive focus on it for a prolonged period of time which has also helped with fund raising for such an important issue

Rob Burrow was the main focus as opposed to Doddy Weir and Stephen Darby and I hope they continue to raise this issue rather than allowing it to fade away out of the public gaze

Proof McDonald's is bad for you. He was a good filmmaker clearly influenced by his mentor Michael Moore. The sexual assault court cases pretty much prevented him from doing much later on

I don't doubt it, but also that being a chronic alcholic is also. Something he conveniently forgot to mention at the time of filming.
