Was in Wethies in Kingston recently. No Guinness and when I got a G&T a bit later. They had no lemon or lime slices.
I mean come on. What’s a guy gotta do. It’s not asking a lot to enjoy a post punt pint  :D

I didn’t dare ask for pork scratchings.

Yes yes I know. I’m rather aloof.

I'm not sure if it's correct but I had heard they were able to do some beers etc so cheap as they were happy to take stock which was closer to the sell by date and then by selling it cheap could shift a shit load of it.

If that is the case then it may be a reason why some lines have availability issues  :unknown:
Lemons should be a given though  :unknown: Having said that so should Guinness  :drinks:

I know they couldn't get pigs in blankets for their Xmas roasts a few years back because there weren't enough people to wrap the bacon round the sausages in the factories  :D

Tim Martin has been selling a lot of his pubs, sign of the times. Too be fair I was in Peterborough last week, and both their spoons were better than average. Spoons vary across the country, believe me I've drank in loads of them.   :drinks:

I've been a Spoons fan for years and the beer's always been top class. And I speak as someone who's run a pub, with proper cask ales, tapped and spiled etc.
The majority of those who attack Spoons and Tim Martin are bitter Remoaners who hate that he was a leading Brexiteer  :yahoo:

Love a Spoons.

Fit barmaids (usually).

Often have cosy booths, useful for dates.

Wetherspoon's has done a great job of bringing back some historic buildings back into good community use and often really sympathetic with the decor as to the previous use.

Seems though (just by sight) that there are an increasing number that have had less and less spent on upkeep and more have become vacant.

I don't know what the food is like nowadays. I hear it's good for gammon though.

Steady on mate, what do you do in a booth, that you can't do at a normal table ?  It's a pub , not a lapdancing club !

Not recently sadly but there were some Tinder dates where we both couldn't 'accommodate' so, to varying degrees, had to rely on public place sexual activity creatively.  Sam Smiths pubs in central London also good for discreet 'under the table' fun.

I am in total shock fellas, after coming back from a trip to Europe. Arrived at Stansted Airport, got the bus into London (currently in the Victoria area), went into the spoons opposite the station and cor blimey geezer, £4.83 for a pint of cask ale FFS!!

Yes I know it's London but nearly a fiver for a pint of ale in a spoons, what's the world coming to. There is a Fuller's pub nearby charging £5.50 for a pint of their ale, haven't really drunk in the capital for years but this was an eye opener!!   :scare:

Not mentioned here so far but the best thing of all about Spoons pubs is the lack of background music.

Every time I go anywhere else with my similarly ageing friends or relatives we have to ask them to turn it down so we can hear ourselves talk.

£2.59 in my local Spoons (in a London suburb) - drinking in central London is not cheap these days, and I suspect Spoons has noticed that all the other pubs went over the £5 barrier a while ago, so has pushed up prices for central London pubs.

Don't get me started on how much Brewdog charge for their beers...

Offline Nightingale

There’s an article in the current edition of ‘Spoonnews that debunks the buying of stock close to its sell buy date making it clear that the breweries wouldn’t sell it to them even if they wanted it. There was a legal claim made by Spoons against the creator of the myth and Google for ‘publishing’ it.

£2.72 in my local spoons in Glasgow. Never been in a Brewdog, but I believe the prices are astronomical, having said that I've just come back from Norway (avg price of beer nearly a tenner and that's not even a pint!).

Went to a nearby town the other week, to attend a concert. I knew parking would be an absolute bugger (there's a good Chinese massage parlour literally next door to the venue), so I decided to go a couple of hours early, get parked, and have a meal. ( no, not a massage!)

There's a Spoons 5 minutes walk away, so went there.

Usual repurposed building, usual good Spoons prices.  Ordered the large gammon with chips, eggs,  peas and onion rings.

Inspected it when it arrived  and sent it back. The peas were like cannon balls, the chips a very dark brown , and the eggs were cooked solid and almost burnt underneath.

Eventually brought a replacement (although they'd kept the same meat on the plate). Eggs still solid but at least not burnt , chips a decent colour but a bit soggy.

Disappointed,  but the concert was great.

I am actually. All the spoons in the city centre charge £2.72 for a guest ale, apart from the Counting House on George Sq where the price is £2.88 for a guest ale. I did have a local spoons in Shawlands but it closed down earlier this year, so nearest one for me now is the Crystal Palace on Jamaica St.

I stand corrected :hi: That's more than decent, considering they charge around £4.60 for a standard pint of Tennents now.

Some of the East London ones are still very, very cheap. Bud Light in Stratford is a mere £2.30.

The Spoons in Glasgow near the main station is massive but pretty soulless like an airport one.

Some Spoons were ideal for meeting women off dating apps, if there's no prospect of being able to go back to hers there's some that have booths which give a lot of privacy so you can access various body parts with no one seeing (being able to do that does open them up to that possibility). The one on Chancery Lane has a very secluded booth and has the bonus of being near the Cittie of Yorke which is all booths.
