Seems Birmingham Mail have ran out of real stories and decided to run this story. I know it isn’t the first time they have run such stories but what annoys me is how one sided the article is.

Can’t see any mention of deposit scammers, time wasters, clock watchers, B&S profiles etc.

If they actually did some proper reporting on the subject they may have a different view of the site but guess that won’t be publicly accepted.

Maybe as Sophie is so compelled to be here then why not sign up?

File under lazy journalism, that paper is nowhere near the quality local newspaper that it once was. It’s full of click bait.

Offline theaccountant

Yeah, I saw that and thought of coming back to see if you guys picked it up. Seems like you did.

The article just seems like a vendetta against UKP from one escort. A single source, instead of speaking to multiple sources or covering things from both sides so as to not come across biased. What a load of shit this article was.

I’m not punting as much now as I usually had. But, I do see the value of escorts/prostitutes/working girls in society. If they didn’t exist, the number of sex related crimes across the world would be astronomical.

It wasn’t that hard to figure out who “Sophie” is, or it could just be a misdirect.

Just one side of the coin.
What about our side of the story? for me punting is a business transaction where both the parties need to fulfil their obligations.

Offline theaccountant

The thing that got me laughing was the first article written about her working in Birmingham (External Link/Members Only) was that she went through all this trauma, selling sex as a way to survive and feed her building drug habit. Then goes to rehab, then has a stable enough life to stop escorting, moves to Birmingham for a fresh start, and then creates a profile on AW. Oh, how she is trapped in this vicious cycle.

Give me a break, the girls isn’t managed, trapped or force into sex work. She’s doing it because she knows it the easiest way to make a shit load of money with little to no education, with a slow week being £700 and a good week being up to £2,000. If she doesn’t like sex work, then she should just stop and go on benefits and join the Open University or something else.

What Birmingham Live should be doing is looking into actual girls who are forced into sex work, you know like some of the girls mentioned on the other forums where they enjoy doing things that we don’t want to.

Seem to remember back in the day (pre internet) local phone boxes around the Birmingham area were plastered in 'escort adds' and the Birmingham Mail did their bit in the form of many escort adds via the classifieds. Maybe they have forgotten this!. Someone on here with more skills than me can probably find an old copy on line.
I think they may have also ran the story about ' local residents' out on the street protesting about prostitutes and their customers. They were also still running the escort adds at this time. I'm thinking about the Ballsall Heath area. :hi:

Quite interesting that we can reverse search back from the quotes and comments in the article to the UKP posts that the reporter was looking at.

I'm not going to post any links for sake of discretion but it looks like they've been working the article, on and off, for about a month, and were definitely were on a mission for a certain type of comment.

I'm guessing the reporter then phoned a few escorts until they found one who would speak to them and give them the kind of quote they were looking for. But the quote from "Sophie" is so generic they could have made it up without ever speaking to anyone, just using info from UKP.

Who would know ?  :unknown:

Very good point! I wonder if they would admit to such indiscretions and do some proper reporting.

Also quite interesting to note that this reporter Stephanie Balloo has done multiple stories all based on the sex trade in the last week ranging from massage parlours, sex workers and the oldest parlour in Brum apparently.  It funny she hasn’t spoken to a single punter 🤷🏽‍♂️

Offline dog999

I remember well the Ballsall Heath residents protesting against 'curb crawlers and their punters'. The local papers were down there like a shot, seeing if they could fill up next days front page whilst still running adds for escorts. You couldn't make it up!. :hi:

The local rag in my area is the Oxford Mail.

They were always going on about prostitutes and street girls in Oxford. It didn't stop them however allowing adverts in their classifieds section of their paper from some of those prostitutes however.

Offline mr.bluesky

I remember back in the day the Birmingham Mail used to have a nearly a full page of classified adverts for sex workers and massage parlours. Talk about "double standards " and according to one working girl from brum I used to see on a regular basis it wasn't cheap either to advertise in that rag of a newspaper. Like alibirmingham says they must be running out of proper stories to report on. Now resorting to lazy journalism.

Sorry but did you not read the same article as the rest of us who were able to work out which site the article is going on about. Doesn’t take a genius to work it out. Some of the statements like

“They then rate the women either ‘negative, positive or neutral' for other men to take note”

That in itself is a giveaway to which site they are on about. So now that we know it’s UKP (and they won’t say the site name as a way of not promoting the site) you ask where’s the dig?

Well how about this one in the first paragraph.

“ 'Disgusting' men are paying for sex with a number of different women across Birmingham - before berating them online in a twisted forum

I’m not going to get into it with you as myself as many others see it the same way as I do. If you don’t that’s fine. But personally being called disgusting cos I’m a punter? Yet making out the wgs are all victims and us punters are to blame etc. that my friend is a dig!

The closet we can get to that is being a porn star but can’t imagine many of us punters having the equipment, stamina, looks/physique, or courage to pull that off. I know I don’t  :D

I particularly like the "goes into detail about their experience and, sickeningly, 'filling the bag'."  :D

I'm curious whether the author of the article knows what that means, or perhaps they think we're referring to women as "old bags".

I would have thought the least sickening thing we can do is fill the condom during a meet, splashing man muck over the escorts face could be considered far more sickening.

She should have given us props for actually keeping things protected and not being disease chasers.

Someone on £100k / year (possibly tax free) would have some good options in life, furthering education, investing, starting a small legit business, etc.

A bit like the Thai girls who come over, save it, go back build a house/ coffee shop, security for the future.

If I wasn’t happy in my job I would change it, Tesco’s would pay “Sophie” £11/hr ? That’s £440/week, work hard move up the ladder, better position, better salary.

Not her usual £2000 a week but you can live on it surely, with your knickers on, without “disgusting men” visiting you, be happier in yourself, meet better friends so she’s not “lonely”, there’s help out there, she’s had before but changed her mind the reports say, unfortunately the report is so badly written it would seem the author has nothing better to offer for the newspaper.

My point was just that we may know what they're referring to, but I'm not at all sure - in fact I strongly doubt - readers of the paper would. We are 100,000 in total. A tiny percentage of the UK population or of Birmingham's. And why should a journalist's dig worry you anyhow?

The reporter's referenced my review (grotty in Yardley Wood)... Infamy! Infamy!

I think some posts here are misogynistic and crass, but then I think reading the reviews here makes me take less risks and avoid (or try to!) SPs who may be being expolited. Good & Bad like most of the internet.

Sex work itself treads a fine line. Are we empowering women to monetize their sexuality or abusing our financial status & exploiting them? I think if the reporter engaged with UKP punters it would have been a different story and probably not the one they wanted. No room for nuance on the internet or in the Birmingham Mail!

No doubt the reporter will check out this thread and I ask them to contact some of the "professionals". I think they'd find a lot of consensus on both sides.

It always amazes me when these reporters have an axe to grind with punters.
'The sex worker admitted to having struggled with addiction in an industry where drug abuse is rife' - it really isn't love, drug abuse and addiction is rife amongst people not the industry, if the 'addiction' is indeed to drugs..or could it be she has an addictuon to the easy money and lifestyle?
What is so sickening about 'filling the bag'...I bet she'd rather it goes down the throat lol.

Local papers were quite happy to pocket money from brothel ads for years in the back pages, so perhaps a little bit repenting now that source of revenue has gone.

Not all SPs are selling themselves for sex.
My good friend has a regular who told him her friend regularly sees several men off a sugar daddy website who pay £500 cash for a date just for company and a meal out , no sex involved.

If you're going to claim that sex work is real work, consumers and customers are going to leave reviews, feedback and recommendations just like how they do on any other product or service. No suprise the entire article is demonising the men, and making the women who chose to be in this line of work (usually out of greed) as innocent victims.

But I think some of the reviews on here do dehumanise SPs and people review them like they were a car.  We should all try not to do this. Perhaps provide some constructiive feedback? Don't be nasty with physical descriptions?  It might seem funny to use such descriptions, but they do harm to the SP when they read them.

You also have to remember that a fair number of SPs are on here too, so will be reading what you say and based on what you say they probably know exactly who you are. Bear that in mind should you want to get a booking with them in the future.

I get what you are saying, and I don't think there is any cause or reason to be particularly mean spirited. However a couple of points, everyone fancies someone different and different body shapes etc. This is a review site. Grotty or shitty descriptions only tend to follow when folks are not presented with what they thought they were going to get.

If you've gone to see a girl because she has a massive arse, you aren't going to complain if she's got a massive arse.

Yes, when we're disappointed we tend to use negative descriptions. Perhaps a more balanced or less nasty description would be possible. If a girl describes herself as stunning and you don't find her to be (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so it's a bad idea to describe yourself like that anyway), then make it clear that you still found her to be attractive or good looking. I have certainly learned through experience that sometimes innocent and seemingly ok comments can result in SPs taking offense and it all kicking off unnecessarily.

I do agree at times words can be choosen more carefully and there isnt always a need to be crass BUT at the same time if a SP is going to take the piss then they need to be ready for the fallout but this is usually around service provided, scamming tactics etc.

Physical appearance i think is very subjective and as long as the SP portrays themselves accuratly and honestly theres not usually any issue.

Most reviews I see on here stat the size age how good there services are.
If they been bait and switched .
Yes there are some who go over the top but not many and soon get called out by punters or mods.
So those who think the girls get a bad deal or get a worse deal then punters get need to go get off here and give the girls a rest .maybe the prices will come down with less punters. And be better  for the rest of us

Thanks to them I found Cheddar Rd. My first visit when I was only a young buck, the whole area was crawling with hookers and curb crawlers. First time I drove down Cheddar Rd scary looking pimps were checking out the cars going down there, got to the end and realized it was blocked off!, shit I had to turn around and drive back past them.
