No point moaning about the pitch - both teams have to bat on it, plus the Aussies won the toss and still got hammered.

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

I don’t think I can recall a side declaring on day one of a test match before.

Stuart Broad is a wonderful player

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

A wonderful test win and our first in 15 years in New Zealand and 10 out of 11 for Ben Stokes.

In Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad we have two very special players and us cricket fans are privileged to be able to watch them become the best bowling partnership of all time. Credit to Harry Brook too who is having the winter of his life and I think he will go on to achieve great things.

What a fantastic time to be an England cricket fan.

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

And Ravi Jadeja is ripping through the Crims batting line up. Happy days

Offline Malvolio

Pretty spectacular collapse by the Aussies - although I doubt if England will do much better when we tour there next winter.

The Bazball approach continues with a cheeky declaration before lunch even though Root was 150* - this would never have happened a year ago.

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

I’m really enjoying the way that they have ripped up the test cricket manual. The combination of Stokes and McCullum has created an environment in the squad where players are thriving. The West Indian sides of the 70’s and 80’s and the Aussie sides of the 90’s and early 2000’s were wonderful to watch but they played to traditional game plans albeit with some of the games all time greats in their teams. The fearless approach of this England side is an absolute joy to see and some bold captaincy by Stokes is changing test cricket for the better.

Offline Malvolio

Let's see what the approach is tonight.   If NZ could score nearly 500, England ought to be able to knock off the remaining runs - but as an England fan I always have doubts.

Offline toon972

107 for 5. What were they thinking for that run out.  :unknown:

Offline Malvolio

Root owes the team some runs and Brook a pint after that - can't believe he decided to take a run to second slip.

Not quite there in the end.  Hopefully Stokes will bear in mind that if we're one up in the Ashes and playing the last test, bat them out of the game if you have the chance.

Moving on to the Bangladesh ODIs, a couple of good results there for England.  Sam Curran seems extraordinarily effective for someone who isn't that tall and doesn't bowl especially fast.

Couldn't agree more!!

The first test of the summer starts tomorrow against Ireland at Lords. Just a warm up for the summer’s main event, the Ashes.

I’m going to three days at Edgbaston and then single days at Headingley, Old Trafford and the Oval. I’m hoping for good weather and for England to regain the Ashes. Now the football season is over I can concentrate on red ball cricket and I’m really excited!

I'm not a big follower of cricket so what are our chances of winning the Ashes back from the Aussies or is it going to be another embarrassing whitewash  :unknown:

I expect it to be close - but a narrow England win - hopefully

The Aussies haven’t won the Ashes in this country since 2001 so our home record over the last 20-plus years is pretty strong, our record down under is a totally different story!

Do we have a chance? Yes we do, we need our key players to stay fit and we have a real chance with the positive brand of cricket that we now play. The Aussies are a good side but not as good as their sides throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, since covid they’ve not played many tests away from home and that may count against them. It’s gonna be a fascinating series and I’m going 2-1 to England and the Ashes regained.

BBC reporting that Jack Leach is out of Ashes - stress fracture of the back
How the hell does a spinner do that ?

He'll be a big miss - perhaps we will now get seamers wickets and play 4 ?

Ben Stokes has said England aren't interested in draws, so I'll put my optimistic hat on and go for a 3-2 home win.

Well that was a hell of a day
- 4 from the first ball
- a mini-wobble
- a masterful hundred
- a freak dismissal
- a buccaneering push
- a first innings declaration

24 days to go...

Offline Malvolio

Poised quite nicely now - supposed to be decent weather tomorrow so will be interested to see how England approach the game, with a not-so-good forecast for Tuesday.

I think Stokes has a bet on - he has to do something totally unexpected each day - declaration, V formation ...

Had a great day at Edgbaston yesterday, I must have been to more than 30 test matches over the years and yesterday’s play was the most absorbing days cricket that I’ve ever seen. You could not take your eyes off it. I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get a ticket for today, despite the rain there should be a result.

Offline Dipper

How easy or difficult was it to get your ticket for yesterday ?

Quite easy, but then again I get priority access to pre-sale tickets. I think I booked these tickets last October.

I was so disappointed with the result of this test we let them off the hook!

That sounds great, the atmosphere looked incredible on television. I was following on the radio and watched the last session it was a great match and came down to the fine margins with the dropped catches (which were not easy chances). I wanted England to win but thought fair play to Australia for chasing the target down. I'm not a cricket expert by any means but felt England could have been a bit more ruthless throughout the match. I did not understand why they didn't take the new ball earlier, I thought maybe to stop boundaries but England needed to get them out anyway so go for it. Feels like going 1-0 down after first test feels a psychosocial blow.

Stokes gambled on the old ball being more dangerous than the hard new ball plus the new ball being harder will come off the bat quicker and boundaries will follow. By that stage England were trying to save runs and defend their total. The gamble didn’t work.

It's all gone quite on the cricket thread, I wonder why  :unknown: is because we are going to get our arses spanked by Australia again.  :dash:
When are the excuses going to be rolled out ?

We don't need excuses.
The Aussies are just a better team in every dept.
I hope it's Anderson's last test. He's looking tired and jaded.

Offline mikecee

How many England batters got themselves in and then got themselves out with utterly reckless shots?  I'm all for attacking cricket but this is just stupid.

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

The frustration for me is that this Aussie team is a good side but no where near as good as the great Aussie teams of the 1990’s. We should be able to beat them at home and so far we’ve not pressed home our advantageous positions.

We had the best of the Edgbaston test until the final session on day five where we lost our heads. We were in a strong position at Lords when we were 188-1 but we didn’t capitalise on that position and now we are fighting to stay in the test.

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

Our bowlers got us back into this test and we need a miracle from our batsmen tomorrow but Ben Stokes loves Ashes Cricket and he produces things like Flintoff and Botham once did. It ain’t over yet.

Offline mikecee

Great innings by Stokes again and he had me believing for a while.  Both games have gone to the last day and last session so far and the series has been good viewing despite the results.

Really good to see the sandpaper kings playing to the spirit of cricket

Offline Malvolio

England could have won that match - the number of extras conceded was way too high and nearly the difference between the two teams.  Got to say my 3-2 England prediction is not looking good.

As for the Bairstow incident, I can imagine the reaction if England did something like that at the MCG.

Well if they just had 2 x stokes in the team - sorted;)

Always very impressive how the Umpire isd well respected unlike the poor refferee in Football.

I know the Aussie's sporting mentality only too well.
It's win at all costs.
Most of them are so thick skinned the criticism won't bother them.
It was obvious what England's coach thought in the post match interview.
Being a New Zealander, he'll know only too well the Australian's attitude.

sad to see an ex-English captain and one of the greatest of all Australian bowlers talking about the rules of cricket

The first thIng you are told on the umpiring course is that anyone talking about the rules doesnt know what he is talking about

THERE ARE NO RULES OF CRICKET - THERE ARE 42 LAWS

What's your view on Bairstow's dismissal?
Is there now no vestige of playing to the spirit of the laws, that cricket was famous for?

Out 100% by the laws - over had not been called and the ball is only dead when finally settled in the fielders hands

he was on another planet wandering around
and in Careys defence he underarmed the ball immediately - in fact Bairstow was still in his ground at that time

but if I was captain I still would have withdrawn the appeal - with a warning not to take the piss again
