Why are these places called saunas ? Do any of them actually have saunas or any sort of spa equipment ?

Ian Haig once said to me in the lounge, ''This place used to be a bakery you know. It's still selling tarts.'' The girls were not impressed. So, it really was a bakery after all. It's sad to see another sauna close. I've got some good memories of the place from long ago.

Most of them had Sauna's in them.

LSS, BSS, NTS. Scorpio , all had saunas , LSA even had a ateam room, I have used these facilties , in all of the establishments , at one time or another.

it wont be a sauna at any rate, it appears that haig turned down an offer to hand the business over to others, before the unfortunate episode, these people know how to run saunas , so all a bit unfortunate, blair st and the new town are as busy as ever, good mix of young and old, foreign and anglophone, newbies and veterans. i imagine scorpio will become a flat, edinburgh property prices are the main threat to saunas, tempting for a landlord to get rid of a tenant to cash in on a property.

blair st and the newtown have saunas, but going back to the middle ages, bath houses were a cover for brothels

I’d have thought over the years most were probably not rented and may have been more likely to have had an owner with some sort of interest in the running/business. Likes of bought a long time ago and held onto for the continued purpose.

Don't know about scorpio but Blair st and London St were both rented, at one time, if they subsequently bought out their leases, who knows.

haig owned scorpio, but decided to move his assets for tax reasons, so he then became a tenant. blair st was owned by a well known crooked lawyer, who ended up in saughton prison on an unrelated matter, no idea of its current status

A girl from Scorpio once told me that she was in a restaurant with Ian Haig. He wanted to finish the evening with a BJ. She refused because she was on a night out at a restaurant, therefore not ''working.'' He didn't get his BJ that night, and I presume that the girl ordered a dessert of her own choice rather than one of Ian Haig's.

That's sad to hear. I too visited that place for many years, it was so busy too, shame it's gone that way. Great memories.
