I have generally booked a few days in advance.  It can depend who you want to see - I get the impression that some are better at giving their availability early and confirming advance booking than others.  I've also had availability change the day before so advance booking isn't guaranteed.

Comms with portfolio can be a bit hit and miss generally in my experience, sometimes they're on it, sometimes it takes ages to get a response.  For that reason I wouldn't want to rely on making a same day booking with them.
