This story came up on a number of sources recently,  including the BBC.  (The version in the link is a good account).

If this is true - and the conversation with LAMBDA is accurately recorded - this is getting scary ( I'm put in mind of HAL in 2001).

We already have computers asking us to prove we are human,  but a computer asking to be recognised  as an employee,  and wanting to be consulted in future discussions about its own development is rather frightening.

It puts me in mind of a short SF story I read in the 70s (Issac Asimov I think) along similar lines.
A supercomputer was developed incorporating communications links across the globe (not unlike what we have in practice with the internet today).
When switched on the first question it was asked was "is there a god?".  The answer came back "there is now".

It's just one daft software engineer trying to lead everyone down a rabbit hole.

I wouldn't be surprised if true AI is getting very close.

I don't think the little transcript included in the article demonstrates AI in any way. There are some excellent chat bots out there, very convincing. But they all reveal that they are just bots the longer the exchange continues.

As that technology gets used more and more it will get harder and harder to recognise a bot conversation. Just because they are able to provide varied, increasingly more relevant responses that doesn't make them truly intelligent, self aware or sentient.

I'm looking forward to buying a blow up doll that will tell me she's afraid I'll leave her. I need a doll with abandonment issues to match my own.
