I remember about 20 years ago or so, maybe less but Ken was Mayor, there was a dispute brought that was entirely resolevable and management said just call it off and we sort it.  The RMT dug in and tacked on more issues/cases.

In the end it transpired that while the strike was unnecessary, it was done for two reasons:

- because striking is in the culture of the RMT and its 'identity' as a strong union
- to flush out moderates who didn't support the hanrdline stance of the leadership (i.e. Bob Crow)

Although it doesn’t look a full wipe out -
But still total distribution

Even if you get in London that’s no guarantee WG will be able to get to their hotels / locations

Offline maybe

looks like plenty more to come, its going to be 2 days of straddle days (so 4 days impact) in may and june as well .... literally a ball ache.

Khan needs to go.
Crime on the up in ldn since he came. Tube strikes etc.
Is the district line to earls court ok on thursday. Where the sexy russians operate. Im planning a russian girl

Offline Stevelondon

Strikes simply means more cars on the road.

Gives Khan another chance to moan about them being there and the effect on the environment. So let’s put up the taxes already imposed on them by congestion charges and ULEZ.
But let’s not try and fix any of those annoying pot holes 🤷🏼

Big fan of all strikes, they should happen more frequently. However, this is probably straying into politics.

hi please be serious in your analysis.

Tube strikes are nothing to do with Khan, every Mayor has tried to make changes to TFL , they resist at every turn .

Eg driverless trains are all over Europe and DLR yet we are still paying minimum £60k a year for drivers

So you recognise that Tube strikes were here before Khan, currently here and will be long after Khan is gone......

>Eg driverless trains are all over Europe and DLR yet we are still paying minimum £60k a year for drivers
Can you cite some examples?

The wiki says this - I can't see many. I travel extensively Europe, Americas, Asia and Japan and haven't seen many.
External Link/Members Only

TFL have looked at the cost of automating the tube - long term and huge costs.
External Link/Members Only

It would probably be cancelled, pruned like HS2.

I don't object to paying someone to drive a train, fly a plane who has potentially the lives of me and hundreds of other passengers. I wouldn't want someone on minimum wage performing the task.

Much of the Tube is already automated, and the best, most efficient lines are.

Offline maybe

The argument for tfl is a difficult one, there are some (like the drivers) that are well paid and then are others (station staff) that are under paid.

Definitely strike days means more strain on busses, cars on roads, will be nightmare getting anywhere unless you're walking.

Don’t worry, plenty of buses and Boris bikes, might take a bit longer to reach your destination but if you really want to get there it’ll be fine.

Felt the full impact of this today.
Tried to make a booking for after work and SP told me it would be too late due to the strike and reduced tube service.
Have rescheduled for tomorrow.

I drove in to London (Whitechapel / Aldgate) on Tuesday. Nice light traffic at midday.

Parked on Commercial Road, free for one hour. Visited client.

Left Whitechapel and drove to a punt further out in East London, free parking in a supermarket car park.

Light traffic driving out of London on the A12.

No fuss, no stress  :hi:

Central London really isn't that big, and I have often walked between Paddington and KX, and Victoria and KX for example.  Once you are out of the centre, the buses, rail and overground become viable options.

Kudos to you sir, but I'd rather not walk from Paddington to Shoreditch

Victoria to Kings Cross, that's a schlep on foot  :unknown:. According to Google maps it takes 1 hour 20 minutes on foot.

A lot of good things to see, places to eat and drink and a host of SPs to dip as you go.

Plenty of worship involved so perhaps more of a pilgrimage, and after a few beddings I'd probably be on my knees between stops.

Why on earth would you need to use a satnav for either of those walks?  Padd to KX is straight along the Euston Road. Vic to KX is up the Mall, then left/north to Oxford St, and on to KX.

Wouldn't the Elizabeth line have been possible for that, with a short walk from Whitechapel?  Or the 205 bus?

Whitechapel Station to Shoreditch High St is around 1 mile and a 23 minute walk.

Kings Cross to Shoreditch High St, 17 minutes by car  ;) - and you can park for free for one hour on Shoreditch High Street.

Look, I appreciate your logistics advice your giving me, (a born and bred Londonder).
I drive, because
1. I have to carry a few heavy things
2. I can also use the phone and talk in privacy to my clients (whilts in the car, prefer that, then in a train full of passengers and potential reception being poor)
3. I sometimes have to go to other locations and my company pays for the expenses.

Except that according to a previous poster, it took 1.5 hours by car from KX on strike day.

No.

You read one post and merged it in your head to another.

No mention of where from and where to.

Also, Kings Cross to Shoreditch is about 2.5 miles - not 10 miles

Some punters might be able to manage quite well by using a combination of the Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground and National Rail - and don't forget buses.

I always do for work, the only lines I need for certain punts are the Jubilee and Central.  I'll just try some old haunts on the Overground next week, no big loss.  Even if some stunner suddenly appears I can probably reach by those options and a bus.

Last time all that was different was a I walked a bit more and the weather was fine and so were the women walking by

Yeah, not too difficult once you're there.

You can walk across the entire width of the City from Aldgate to Chancery lane in less than 40 minutes. Walking through the City of London is an absolute joy, lots of history to take in.

So long as it's not pissing with rain.

It looks like the strikes are off this week, but some new ones planned for early June.

Strike action by RMT Tube drivers, planned to take place between Tuesday 19 and Friday 22 May, has been withdrawn.

Tube services across the network will now run as usual.

I've walked through the City in the rain. I don't mind it, sometimes.

The issue is when it's windy and you get a venturi effect of the wind speeding up as it passes between the buildings, combine that with rain and you get horizontal rain that takes no prisoners.
