I occasionally get texts from the mobile provider saying "Top up by x and get free data" or some other marketing message.

UPDATE:  As I'm sitting here typing that my punting phone springs into life...

"Your 500Mb UK internet for a month has now expired..."

If punting phone is bought from Carphone Warehouse, avoid having to give your address. But you may still get texts now and then from them, for offers, upgrades, etc.

Offline CBPaul

Even punting phones aren't infallible. I'm single so don't have the problem of a nosey OH but today I called a WG that I'd previously seen. No answer to the call so I went for plan B (a very good plan B as well). Later, on the way home, my phone bleeps to indicate a text received. Text reads " sorry hun, busy all day, call again soon xxx". Moral of the story is turn off, or at least turn the volume off, on your punting phone because you could walk through the door, give your Mrs a little kiss on the cheek, and your secret punting phone suddenly rings or bleeps in your pocket - game over.

The whole idea of a punting phone is that it is only used when punting. At all other times it is switched off and stashed away. Carrying a punting phone, switched on and at full volume along with your main phone makes a nonsense of the whole concept.

Offline CBPaul

I have warned him a few times,he even calls them when abroad, just lucky that no one checks the phone bills!

But if his costs rise well above other people's then they may well take a close look - then he's fucked.

I just use my normal phone.

I don't have anyone to hide from, and never had a text, call or anything else from a WG.

OH in play - punting phone for deffo. If nowhere to safely keep then simcard option
No OH in play - punting phone for deffo. A OH could come along in the future.  Any you can g'tee she'll be fucked off if she finds out that you like hookers

It's not just about the OH. Even if you are single and have nothing to hide, if you end up using your work number to call WGs, there is a possibility of that number being exposed in the future by an irate WG.

A prospective customer then googling your mobile number... as well as finding it in the plumbing, or lawyer section, etc. will also see alink to an escort forum, about being a "timewaster", or asking for BB, etc. Would you want this happening to you?????

Thanks matey
A bit off thread but thought it worth a mention is what happens when an OH finds out that their geezer likes hookers.  Seen this happen to a mate of a mate.  The OH tells absolutely all their friends / mums at the school [if kids].  Just to make you look a cunt.  And the same would apply to future OH's too.  It gets worse as assuming a termination of relationship then they are bound to tell any new girlfriend exactly why you split up.  And that will go down like a lead balloon.  And create lots of suspicion about your behaviour / activities & put a significant damper on future punting prospects !  Nokia tastic is the way to go - difficult to fuck up with these basic mobiles

I think that fits in to the bucket of why I've never met anybody who has ever been dumped or whose fault the breakup was. The simple way of explaining the above scenario would be the ex was on the game to fund her online gambling.

Presume your mate is called Terry Fuckwitt - he might as well be
When he makes a spectacular fuck-up @ work [& judging by his antics with his work mobile this is a dead-cert] & his employer wants to sack him for XYZ reason then they could have the drains up if they are motivated to avoid a pay off.  Paying a PI to go thru phone bills won't cost them that much in comparison to potential savings. He's hardly going to be able to dispute using his company mobile to procure hookers.  It wouldn't be hard - starting with calls later in the evening / early hours  If i was his boss i'd fire him for being a bell-end, for not using a different mobile.  Shows a capacity for being a liability

One of my mates once used my mobile coz he had no reception where we were at the time.  I asked for the phone & he said he was expecting a call back in the next 1/2hr. As it was already like 1am then i went fucking mental.  I told him to go outside & call the agency & give them a different number saying like his had run out of charge. And if i had any shit from it then i would dob him in without even thinking twice about it.  Cunt

Coming back to your mate - imagine how he would explain:  1/ loss of his job to OH & 2/ why he's looking for a job to a new potential employer

Best buy would be a second hand phone bought for cash as it would be registered to the first owner if it was on a contract leaving them as the owner not you . A sim from poundland etc and always cash for top ups . Find free wifi and set up a new email for punting from and always use free wifi or the allowance you get from your service provider . Stay safe from scammers . Q

2/ why he's looking for a job to a new potential employer

Just make up some bull shit.  Job hunting is completely normal even when you're in a job.  Your ex employer is reluctant enough to give you a bad reference about your sloppy hand writing that they can get sued over let alone say you got fired for calling hookers.  Even then you could just say it was a wrong number if a one off.

No need. Just buy a £10 phone from Tesco (Nokia 100) - you don't need any i.d., and don't even need to go through a cashier - you can buy it through self-service. Likewise, you can get a SIM for £1 from most supermarkets in the same way. Don't make it complicated.

Second hand phones may indeed be registered to the owner... who may have reported it as stolen.  Not a good idea to flag yourself up as receiving stolen goods: and while the police are looking into that, they will no doubt want to know who you've been corresponding with on the phone - see if there's any known drug dealers or human traffickers in there on the basis that people who deal with criminals are more likely to be involved in criminal activities themselves.

I was again wondering about this the other day.... and although I don't use a different phone, I can see the point of it...

but how do you all be to the punts? do you have a punting car? or always take public transport? or just use your normal/family/work car?

what about clothes? do you have specific punting clothes?

Funny you should mention that.  No punting clothes or car but I do try to park close but where they can't see my number plate and try not to wear anything that's memorable and could get me recognised in future.

I did this recently to get a 2nd punting phone and was very surprised at the lack of ID required, considering their potential use by terrorists.
I went to an Argos in a town a long way from home and was all prepared with a false name and address. No questions asked, paid cash, haven't registered my details and always top up with vouchers. Job done.

Or have a spare un registered oyster card if your paranoid about the missus getting hold of your oyster card and trying to look up where you have been

I reckon if you got a ziplock poly bag, put your phone in it (minus the sim) and hid it in some bushes it would likely be ok and likely still there months later. If it did occasionally go walkies then £15 for a new one. Don't have to be your bushes so awkward questions.
Hehe, that's so "james bond" - I might try it

My punting sim stays in a 3g dongle - hiding in plain sight,
and gets swapped into my main phone pre punt.

Reason for having a punting phone - theoretically (and yes I know there is only a tiny chance of this but I don't think it falls in the 'crazy paranoid category'), if you use your normal phone and it's a pay monthly contract, a WG could know someone who works for O2, Vodafone or whoever and ask them to have a quick gander on the company database about who you really are, where you live etc. if you submit a poor review, decide not to go through with the punt upon seeing the girl, or just because they flip out one day and decide that all punters are evil and you as the most recent one deserve to be punished.

Again, incredibly unlikely but why even take the risk of communicating in a form that is in any way tied to your real details?

He then wanted to know more about the text and he's now a punter too

Don't know if it has been said already but if your phone is not locked to a network just a different SIM may well suffice... easier to hide from the OH. Downside is if your main phone is expensive you may not want to risk taking it to a punt if you are worried about theft etc

Even if you don't have a wife or GF, you can still get problems. For example, Abbi/Bomshell made a threatening call, attempted to out me on Saafe and I've reason to believe that she passed my number to at least one other person. However, Admin has External Link/Members Only her.

My punting phone is an old HTC Wildfire on giffgaff with £10 airtime credit. It's actually quite handy to have a second phone anyway because if I can't use my main phone (which is on Vodafone), I can reach for my backup phone that is on a different network.

Arranged a punt the other week and set off without the punting phone (I didn't realise till I pulled up outside). Used my normal phone and didn't think anything of it as she lived a good hour from me and had good feedback. Put her number in facebook and she's from my home town and is friends with several of my friends. I also know her brothers. Hopefully she doesn't do the opposite!. Lesson learned.

Another thought - I just googled my AW username out of curiosity, and it happens (by coincidence rather than planning) to be in a song lyric, so any mention of me will be buried amongst a sea of references to that, lyric pages, YouTube videos and the like. Choose a username which is in common usage in some other context and whilst you won't be impossible to find it will be considerably more difficult.

Ouch!... Just typed my mobile number into Google!... Now I'm definitely getting a punting mobile! Hope none of my conquests have Googled my number!

Online JoeyRamone

I've never had a punting phone - I always thought I wouldn't need it as I'm a single guy, no one's gonna be reading my texts and/or emails, and I'm pretty good with my privacy settings etc (I often google my own phone number to see if it gets any hits, and it doesn't), I never reveal my full name to WG's (although I do use my real first name, but I don't reveal my surname - mainly as there's no reason to not use my first name, and no reason to reveal my surname), and I even have numbers of regularly contacted WGs in my phones contacts, as it's easier than always going on AW to get the number (for one off meetings, I'll save the girls number for calling/texting prior to the punt, then delete it after). I also always set a pin on my iPhone before attending a punt, so that if I lose it or I'm robbed, I can remotely wipe the phone before (hopefully) it's accessed by whoever finds/steals it.

However, I got a surprise today (hence posting on this thread). I was looking for an old friend on FB, and after sending this person a friend request, below it was a list of "people you may know" generated by FB. Nothing unusual there, FB is always doing that - usually it's friends of friends, colleagues, etc. Normally I ignore them, but since I was bored I decided to click them off, so they don't reappear again - and was amazed to find a WG I've punted with in that list! She's not too far from me, but isn't really close either. I do have her number saved in my phone, as even though I've only punted her once, I intended to book her again.

Now my number isn't associated with FB - made sure of that as even though I have people on my friends list, I don't want all of them to have access to my phone number. So unless she has her number associated with her FB account, the only way I can think FB listed her as a person I may know is GPS tracking - i.e., she uses FB at her address, I've been to her address with my phone that also has the FB app installed on it, and FB made the link. This kinda makes sense as it also suggested I may know two of my neighbours - neither of which I haven't got a phone number for, nor any other contact details. So I can only assume it's linked those two neighbours to suggested people based on GPS location of where we all use FB regularly. That being said, I know I didn't *USE* FB at the WG's address, I'm just thinking that maybe the FB app is often tracing where I've been in the background, for location based services and ads, etc.

I've also had plenty of instances where a WGs number has come up as iMessage, or on Whatsapp.

So yeah, now I'm thinking a punting phone might not be a bad idea. Problem is, I'm still likely to take my iPhone with me, 1) as I use it as a sat nav for directions / finding places, 2) as I might need it for non punting, and 3) it's an extension of my arm and with me wherever I go anyway, which is why I've never bothered to go down the punting phone route.

But it's definitely food for thought!

Facebook can track GPS but you have to explicitly enable that feature and it only tracks people already in your FB friends list or a nominated list.  It does not nominate friends based on location.

Most likely culprit is Facebook Messenger - if you ever installed it on your phone - even for a minute and then uninstalled it - then your phone number will have been automagically linked to your FB account and the list of people you may know updated.  The list isn't automatically removed even if you subsequently remove your number from FB.

FB Messenger is a piece of crap - any time you get PMs from your FB contacts it will ask you to install it as it's the only way to do PMs on the mobile app.

I once relented and installed it and instantly got linked with a WG - not a problem as she was a trusted reg, and anyway my FB account is locked down so unless I accepted a friend request she couldn't have seen anything about me except my profile name and profile pic which are both anonymous anyway.

Online JoeyRamone

I have made sure, and checked on several occasions, that both FB app and FB Messenger do NOT have access to my phone contacts, and that there is no syncing or collating.

FB must be suggesting friends based on location, as I have zero contact details for my two neighbours (no phone numbers, no email addresses, nothing) and neither of them have any mutual friends in common with myself, so unless it's a massive coincidence of randomness that they were both suggested to me, it must be based on location. There are zero links between myself and this WG on FB or anywhere else (except of course that I have phoned and texted her). So it must be location wise, because there are no other links between ourselves, and likewise for my neighbours that FB suggested.

My FB settings are like yours - completely locked down; my name, email address and phone number cannot be searched from Google, or even within FB itself. I can only be contacted by either people on my friends list, or they're friends.

You cannot use FB messenger and NOT give it access to your phone number. You cannot selectively choose permissions for a mobile app. If you installed it on a phone, the number of that phone is inextricably linked to it. The only way to remove that link is uninstall FB Messenger. Even then, any mutual contacts it found while installed will still show up.

Online JoeyRamone

I've checked all lover the place and seen no mention or indication that FB Messenger knows, links to, attaches itself, or does anything with the phone number of the phone. And why would it? iPod Touches and iPads don't have phone numbers, but can still use FB Messenger - and they can make and receive calls over it, as it uses your FB profile to connect, not your phone number. As for mutual contacts, it is only working with FB contacts as I told both Messenger and FB that it cannot access my phones contacts. FYI, I'm not talking about it showing up any contacts, such as WG's, listed in Messenger or FB. The only "contacts" in my Messenger app, or FB app, are the people I am friends with on FB itself - nothing from my contacts at all. The WG that I have been talking about was listed in the "People you may know" friend suggestions on the FB website, NOT in the app or Messenger app.

But I'm not going to argue with you about it, so it's fine. We shall agree to disagree. All I wanted to do was highlight what surprised me today.

Disagree all you want. You're wrong. Facebook Messenger has access to almost EVERYTHING on your phone. These permissions have absolutely NOTHING to do with your FB account permissions which are completely different - after huge amounts of user pressure FB allowed users to lock their FB account down. At that time, you could message natively in the FB mobile app itself - FB Messenger was created AFTER as a way to stealthily get back access to all the info they used to have - and a whole load more. They then FORCED all users who were messaging to switch to FB Messenger.

Check for yourself here under permissions on the Google Play app store:
