I often think that we in the UK underappreciate how marvellous some of the infrastructure and architecture created during this country's incredible past is. And this is I believe a case in point. I used to stay in a hotel - a converted Albert Dock building - built for the ages - will stand for a couple of thousand years. But it was obvious that there was a lot of new development going on which was utterly shite by comparison.

Really sad IMO - but they only have themselves to blame. The richest city in the world at its height, now at the mercy of rapacious property developers and those they can bribe.

I guess money, especially when it comes in brown envelopes, talks?

Seemingly it's mainly due to Everton's new Bramley Dock stadium plans.

UNESCO want to keep a decrepit, derelict dock, locked behind rusted gates, as it is. Everton are planning to spend £55 million to preserve a crumbling water tower in the precincts. Additionally, if they move out in the future, the dock can be retro engineered and refilled with water, back to a Victorian dock again.

Part of the deal for getting WHS status involved preserving the site and maintaining an unobstructed view of the three graces. The council almost immediately shit all over that agreement by building a glass carbuncle next to the Port of Liverpool building that's completely unsympathetic to the surroundings.
Personally I don't give a shit as to whether the Pier Head has this status. It was an iconic waterfront for a century before getting the status and will continue to be an iconic waterfront for centuries to come irrespective of this UNESCO "badge".

Gone. Secret Ballot - cheeky cunts can't even admit in public which country's delegates voted to launch Liverpool.

One thing has occurred to me....

Most of Liverpool's magnificent old buildings were built by good burghers who could be said to have made their money (in)directly through the slave trade. Back in 2004 there didn't seem to be too much concern about this, clearly it didn't bother UNESCO in terms of awarding WHS status back then.
Fast forward to today with people tearing down statues and renaming buildings and streets there seems to be an appetite to undo history.

I dunno if these modern sensibilities were playing a part in the background of UNESCO's thinking? Can't say I've seen any overt reference to the origins and history of the Pier Head in the recent hoo-ha but I suspect some militants will be pleased it's lost its status.

A decision orchestrated by the Chinese, to be announced during a UNESCO meeting in China, deliberately intended to cause Britain "loss of face" in the third world / Asia
With our naval battlegroup heading for the South China sea you're going to see more shit like this over the coming months.
All those UNESCO voters would have been promised either personal baksheesh, or no-interest development loans.
UNESCO is corrupt and in the pocket of the Chinese and Russians

This is true. I know Trump talked about trade wars with China and we are deploying vessels there, but a lot of press have been hinting at a war with China which is a total fabrication. We PAID China to takeover our textiles, plastics and steel industries. It's never going to happen.

(And for the record - Beatles pun intended - I'm with them ).

Something which has occurred to me: certainly there is a lot of friction between the West and the China/Russia axis, be that economic or security. The whole 5G thing, the historic plundering of our IP (which we effectively encouraged so we could have cheap goods), the hacking, the treatment of Hong Kong, the stealing of surrounding territories (Tibet, Crimea, strategic islands in international waters etc).

Russia have previously mooted that because of the way they have set up their servers (I think), they would consider just cutting themselves off from the WWW. They would effectively become an intranet.

I can't help thinking with all the shit that's going on, especially the persistent hacking of our industries and govt institutions, that perhaps we ought to just do it for them, and that would also send out a signal to China. I only have a small brain though, and although it would make me feel better giving Putin a kick in the balls, it would probably do more harm than good.

Perhaps there might be a way of contaminating his Botox supply with Polonium, that would be rather good...

There was the microchip company that was sold off today as well. There's more chance of me having a threesome with Rihanna and Kate Beckinsdale than there being any action taken against China, like I say it was all planned to ship the factories off to China.

Is that the sale that our govt was looking into, in terms of national security? In which case I guess they passed it?

As we know, there is currently a fleet of Allied warships on their way to international waters which China would like to see as 'their own', it does seem that the West is willing to make various points to China, whether that has any effect, we shall see.

I find it interesting that Russia has eschewed Communism (and the Soviet Unon broke up of course), whereas the Chinese have kept it going. In real terms of course, Russia is still a totalitarian regime, just implicitly rather than explicitly. Although previous 'old Communist friends' China and Russia have supposedly gone down different paths now, in reality they are still soulmates and will do all they can to fuck up the West while smiling in our faces.

As times get more and more fraught, they will undoubtedly act in concert against the West.

Sorry WW, that's gone way over my head. Fact is, due to the worldwide popularity of the Beatles and Liverpool FC ( pains me to say that, being a blue ) the tourist liners will still dock at the Pier Head. Nothing will change.

That was exactly my point, if you ask most visitors to Liverpool why they came I doubt many would refer to Unesco Heritage Site status. Everyone has heard of the Beatles, who the fuck has heard of Unesco by comparison? Anyway, all their records were shit!  :D

As Mikecee says most scousers probably weren't even aware of it and those that were couldn't give a fuck. Tourists will still visit the place due to it's Beatles connection

No only "I am the walrus" and "Yellow submarine" were shit. Paul McCartney made heaps more shit records after he left the beatles such as Mulligans tyre and Ebony and Ivory and the frog chorus song  :scare:

Stonehenge may be next, says the Guardian newspaper today.
Went there once about 50 years ago.
I was very underwhelmed by it all. Just a load of stones. Stayed about 10 minutes and left.

Never been back since.
Much prefer The Stone Roses or The Rolling Stones  :)
