The other side of this is that virtually all the resident thai girls I know in Lancashire are working in parlours by necessity after broken marriages. Brought here with lots of promises by older blokes, then after a few years dumped and traded in for younger women.
There needs to be more controls to stop these women from getting conned

I know of one friend that married a russian mail order bride and it worked out well for him and its been about 20 years.  I think if both parties are honest and up front  it could work.
If the whole process wasnt so scammy in general i probably would have given it a go.  Too many middle men grabbing money.

I made sure to check properly that this was not a made up film.

DOCS: I Married The Waiter - Love In The Sun (This one is a role reversal, brit women marrying foreign younger men)

External Link/Members Only

"‘I Married The Waiter: Love In The Sun’ tells the stories of British women of all ages and backgrounds, who went on a holiday in the sun, only to fall in love with a foreign man. The film features a range of genuine love stories of varying emotions and with different, sometimes surprising, outcomes. Anne, Dawn and Jean fell in love, at different times, with Greek men who all lived on the island of Symi. Maddison, Fleur and Ruth all fell in love with Turkish men. Dorothy, at the age of 77, married a 21-year-old Tunisian boy. Some of these marriages endure to this day. Others, for various reasons, didn’t last the course, but none of the women have any regrets."

Young Virgins For Sale - The Controversial Bride Market of Bulgaria

External Link/Members Only

Every spring, the town of Stara Zagora in central Bulgaria hosts a controversial bride market where young virgins are paraded in front of suitors who bid on them. The market is the biggest annual get-together for Bulgaria’s 18,000-strong Kalaidzhi Roma clan, a subgroup of the Roma people who face constant prejudice and exclusion across Europe. Unable to live off their ancient coppersmith heritage, the constantly sensationalised bride markets are one of the last surviving Kalaidzhi traditions. To find out why these medieval-sounding markets exist in modern Europe, and how Kalaidzhi girls feel about being sold off, Broadly correspondent Milène Larsson travels to the village of Orizovo to spend time with a family with two daughters as they're preparing for the annual bride market.

Modern day dating can be a real headache. For men with little experience or those burned by an ugly divorce, the idea of looking for a wife in a foreign country, known for its solid family values, seems like a viable solution.

Ten men are determined to find a spouse during their trip to the city of Odessa, Ukraine. They have only ten days but countless opportunities to meet the right woman or fall for a scammer in this land of stunning beauties. Not all men are losers and not all women are gold diggers, but the abundance of romantic opportunities brings out the best and the worst in human nature.

China's Unmarried 'Leftover' Women

But now, China is home to a fifth of the world’s women whose status as equals is dwindling. Domestic violence rates in the country have soared, marital rape is not considered a crime, those who dare to call themselves feminist activists are being detained by the government, and unmarried women older than 27 are commonly referred to as ""leftover women.""

To find out what lies behind the drastic shift in women’s social status in China, we track down feminist scholar and ""iron girl"" Wang Zheng and spend a day with one of China’s so-called leftover women. We also explore the extremes of China's wedding industry and its defectors before meeting Wei Tingting, one of the five women's rights activists detained for trying to start a campaign against sexual harassment on public transportation.

I was going to mention the chinese leftovers as an option to mail order brides but their stern culture makes it too hard.  Seeing those markets in person is quite the experience, almost sad really.   Usually the parents setting up little booths with a catalog of their daughter for all to check out then they vet you withsome incredibly high standards.  Doctor?  Own many properties?  Parents deeply involved in your life?  Chinese? No to any of these and your out and the search goes on.  The girls dont have a say.
I have a friend dating a 40 year old leftover right now in london.  They met online without her parents knowledge about 6 months ago.  They want to go further in the relationship but he knows once the parents find out he will be kicked out of the relationship and she will be alone again.  He has already been told by her that since he doesnt own property, any property, they cant get married.  While thats easy enough to over come he is but a simple robotics engineer making about 100k a year and that job isnt prestige enough to meet the parents approval so she can never marry him so will be alone.  For clarity her parents dont work and they certainly arent rich.  The daughter fully supports them on her 50k a year job as she brings great shame to them and is her punishment for not being married.  Interestingly she bought the property the parents live in which brought greater shame to her as property ownership is for men only.
Hearing the stories from him is really interesting.  She is a great girl too.

I have a couple stories about those bulgarian brides too.  A friend married one, had twins and she is taking everything he owns now.  It was an easy way for her to get a better life.  The kids are just a tool she made.  She wants no part of them yet he cant have them either.  Supposedly they are being shipped back to bulgaria while she stays to enjoy her new life.
The roma market is quite a scary place.  It felt like modern day slavery.  Like 15 year old girls dressed like whores mostly being sold by the parents.  Some still held on to the tradition of fancy dress and family intergration though which is slightly better.  The gypsy grab comes from here i am pretty sure.  Hold the girl long enough and she is yours at the market.  Some girls do put up a fight though.

Wow...that's insane. I wonder where the chinese ladys' parents got their viewpoint from that they have effectively blackballed their daughter from having a fufilling long term relationship. Is it a cultural thing? How can her parents not be well off yet they are demanding their daughter to snag a rich man essentially with high social standing from their cultural perspective. I wonder how they realistically expect her to be able to do that? It just does not make any sense to me. I feel sorry for them both.

Yes, there are many parts of the world that women are still traded openly like commodities. It's all quite strange, I don't see feminists harping on about it though.

havent noticed that case, but any true crime buff will have come across loads of cases, where there is huge financial incentive to one party, there will be deceit, east europeans, south americans, asiatics, are the usual suspects, its not unlike the sex industry, the ruthless meeting the vulnerable

Thanks not a lot of info about her motive, these cases often feature car crashes, poisoning and insurance policies recently started.

Its a cultural thing.  Respecting the parents means everything and daughters are almost throw away people so they will be asked to sacrifice the most.
Its probably a better system than say an arranged marriage or the gypsy market way.
