Author Topic: Shit for brains rugby players  (Read 1930 times)

As a Rugby fan I've often been critical of modern day footballers and their behaviour in recent times but it seems some Rugby players are just as bad. England were due to play The Barbarians on Sunday before the resumption of the Six Nations championship. To be picked to play for the Barbarians is considered to be a great honour just like been picked to play for your country or British and Irish Lions. However a number of them left the isolation bubble of their Hotel to go out to a restaurant.  This happened not once but twice .This was discovered and now the game against England has now had to be called off . The  game was going to be played behind closed doors but it was going to be televised by Sky so I can imagine they are not going to be happy about it. All because the actions of a brainless few  . One of the players involved was Chris Robshaw who is an experienced ex England captain who you would think would know better  :dash:

I've noticed that too over the last 5yrs or so. The English players seem physically fit, hard working and strong but none of their games seem to exhibit rugby "intelligence", and they seem to often make, what appear to me,  clueless blunders. Also off the pitch - most of the Welsh, Scottish & Irish players seem so much more articulate in the post match interviews than their English counterparts.

the standard went downhill when the percentage of posh public schoolboys declined and the game became professional - like that Northern riff raff

that Lancastrian Farrell thug would probably not been allowed to play in the good old days - and certainly not be captain that's the job for a gentleman

at least he hasn't fucked up as captain like that southern shandy drinking nonce Robshaw

He was captain against the Springboks in the final. He fucked up there by not changing the game plan after 5 /10 min when it obviously wasn't going to work. Once the Boks realised the UK team weren't smart/flexible enough to change their plan it was game over. The Boks knew withinn 15/20 min " we've got these guys cos they're too dense to work out how to beat us" . The Boks would have been able to explain how they themselves could be beaten but they quickly realised England wouldn't be able to suss it out so they just enjoyed their day in the park and went home with the trophy.

These guys were being paid £5000 each to spend a week in the Park Lane Hilton (where they had a lockdown games room) and then play the match.   It beggars belief that they felt the need to sneak out to an italian restaurant - I've never stayed there, but I guess the food at the Hilton isn't that bad.   Lots of fans, myself included, always look forward to a Barba's game as they are invariably great fun and entertainment.   This bunch of fuckwits has spoilt the show for millions and the cancellation will cost the RFU a lot of money it can ill afford to lose at this time.

It will probably cost the RFU a million pounds calling off this game according to some sources. Sky who were due to televise it and Quilter the sponsors will no doubt demand compensation. The RFU have already lost Millions this year since the Covid crisis with all domestic and international matches having to be played behind closed doors. This is another blow they could have done without due to the action of a dozen or so thoughtless players.

the counter argument would be he has a first class honours degree for working out how to beat the All Blacks in the semis and he didn't fuck up a home world cup by failing to even get out of the group stages

as for the SA final it wasn't clear within 5/10 mins although the Sinkler loss was key but hardly the captain's fault and they were level until about the 35th minute.

Indeed the RFU is in serious financial trouble which stems back to the 2015 World Cup and Covid has been just been another nail in the coffin. They have made significant numbers of staff redundant including at grass roots level and God knows what those staff must think about this fiasco.

The staggering thing is that there were at least twelve 'stupid' players and that it seems there were 2 incidents .. one to the restaurant and one to a pub. RFU staff on site did not prevent it happening. Robshaw in particular should be hung out to dry.

However I also read this

"All Barbarians players had to sign up to a Covid code of conduct and they were constantly reminded of the need to maintain the strict biosecure bubble at twice-daily meetings and on a squad WhatsApp group. It is understood that once they had tested negative earlier in the week, the bubble was extended to allow them to go for walks and to the cafe in nearby Hyde Park, provided they were socially distanced"

Which bright spark thought it was OK to allow them to go to a café? Talk about mixed messages. Total fiasco. Many failures.

In addition there is the prevailing mindset that Covid is of no significance to young, fit, healthy individuals.

This thread has prompted me to look up the Barbarians, I also looked up 'nutritionist Barbarians' to find out how looked after and guided they are. It would seem that historically they play the game for playing, rather than winning, also perhaps they break the rules a little sometimes.

The final sentence regards mindset is indeed one I have detected in certain circumstances, however the conspiracy theories appear to come from those around my own age.

It shows up the bias that is in the media.

If it had been footballers, it would be headline news on TV and newspapers.  Because it was Rugby players, it only gets reported in the sports section as a minor item.

Not bias I don’t think... Footballers earn massively more than rugby players. It has a global worth of about 30 times what rugby has.. so not really a comparison

you may be right but the value of  a story should not be dependent on the global financial value of a sport. A Brit could win the Giro today and it will hardly get a headline and certainly won't make the back page whereas if the wives of Rooney and Vardy go to court Monday it would be headline stuff on the front of most tabloids

May I ask where you got your figures from - a Google link perhaps as they don't seem right to me but I stand to be corrected

The fact is papers print stories that sell papers and more people are interested in football than rugby so any football related story will sell more than a rugby one.

That is true. If it's a cricketer or a rugby player called Will, then  it's all jolly japes.  If it's a footballer called Billy then he's crucified by the media

Exactly this.
Same as when a bunch of Oxbridge students trash a restaurant it classed as "high jinks and" letting off steam ".
If it was a bunch of lads from a council estate they'd get called thugs and scum.  :unknown:

Let's face it rugby players have never been that bright. I remember a news story in the 80s about some England Internationals drinking aftershave.

yes thanks I know that I was just remarking that it shouldn't necessarily be that way and it is a shame that a Coleen Roooney gossip story carries more gravity than a Hart victory

Glad you asked had me puzzled

The drum of the class struggle, toffs are bad they dont know what" real life "is about, the working class are wonderful. As someone who had the serious misfortune to be lower working class, and was brought up on a council estate, i disagree. Not going back to taking sugar in my tea any day soon.

Oh dear. You've totally missed my point dear boy.. I was merely pointing out the double standards the media deals out to equal acts perpetrated by those from different classes.
Remember the hilarity when David Cameron forgot one of his children in a pub/restaurant. All shits ang giggles.
If that had been a single mum on a council estate that would've got absolutely slated by the Sun, Mail etc.

And I grew up in a poor working class family like you so I know not everyone's a good person in that environment. But equally I knew many decent working class people, as I have many wealthy and privately educated people considered upper middle/upper class..
If anything, bit sounds like you're ashamed of where you come ftom?

you have posted more than once about toffs v proles,i suggested that if you had such a negative view of toffs, you should insist that only a stated educated doctor should operate on you, you have your opinion, i have mine, i am not ashamed , just pointing out my position, is based on personal experience.

The sad truth is that most of them probably don't give much of a shit since their view is so short sighted; the only thing they might rue is the loss of £5k. I can't believe any public apology to be sincere: it's about protecting their public image and any future earning potential. Arseholes. I'd be particularly pissed if I were in the England camp since it means they don't have a warm up game before the 6 Nations concludes. It's fortunate they face Italy rather than Ireland or France.
