I use emojis quite often to help convey the intent of my messages when using text or WhatsApp in both my daily and work life.  The generic emojis on those apps do a useful job of helping clarify the intent and context and go a long way to ensuring the words of the message are understood as intended.

The animated emojis on this site are quite different.  Many of them seem designed to take the piss or irritate.  I see them as especially juvenile and sarcastic.  They're provocative little pricks...

I'd even suggest that the choice of these emojis as the default options actually creates more conflict and confrontation, and since arguments and challenges seem a pretty standard default among some members of UKP, I'd say that these emojis are a large contributor to the confrontational tone that evolves on many threads.

Cue the trolling over-use of emojis below...

You still moaning about emojis. You say you use them but a while back you accused me of using emojis.

What point are you making with your use of these silly emojis?

Sounds like double standards to me. :unknown:

I said I often use the standard emoji sets that you get on text/whatsapp etc.  I've occasionally used these ones that are fairly unique to this site.  But rarely... Because they seem designed to increase confrontation, whereas standard emojis don't have that effect.  Do you understand the point I'm making?

With the best will in the world Spence id suggest that the site emojis are fine and any tendency towards confrontation is probably more down to the attitude of the individuals involved
Take yourself for example , your like to boast about how well you do on SA while other people are saying they find it difficult and yet on here all you seem to do is get involved with silly ego driven arguements with people , like what was that recent exponential thing between you and Lost & Found all about.  Surely someone who thinks so highly of himself as you do could avoid getting into mindless bickering contests like that if he wanted to rather than blaming the site emojis.

Basically even if someone says something provocative to you its up to you to take a deep breath and not escalate the confrontation , you could always just ignore it or even let it slide or better still replie in a conciliatory way

I see your point but I think there are a range of emoji's and not all of them are negative and create confrontation. Are you looking for some emoji's containing flowers and hearts? :D

I can't wait for King Tarzan's contribution to this thread.

You're clearly an intelligent and articulate guy Spencer and judging by the Seeking thread, bloody good at getting a decent shag.
Despite all this, I'd say your posting style  can come across as rather smug and self satisfied. Dare I say it you sometimes flirt with arrogance.
I'd suggest this may be the cause of people's reactions to you, rather than some harmless emojis? Also, the fact that you stated at the end of your post that you were waiting for people to troll you suggests that (a) You have a very thin skin?
(b) You secretely like the attention and banter and wanted to wind people up?

Of course this is purely my opinion and I'm sure and others will have alternatives

Thanks, I don’t disagree with much of what you write. This isn’t the only forum of which I’m a member, but I do find myself often responding/posting with a less conciliatory tone than my usual approach.
The reason why I posted the last line is that I fully expected many of the responses to be antagonistic and personal, rather than a discussion on the notion that the animated emojis might indeed be a catalyst to the often confrontational nature of this forum in general.
I don’t have a thin skin, it wasn’t an intention to wind people up - it genuinely was a question to see if other people felt the style of emoji used was a multiplier in terms of creating conflict.
I shall assume it’s just me that thinks that way about them, then.

Fair enough. I note that you joined the site about 6 months after me. You'll no doubt recall that at that time the site was a much more confrontational, antagonistic and unpleasant place. Thankfully many of the dinosaurs responsible for that have either left the site, been banned or rarely post.
I think.if they were still around someone like yourself would probably have been  goaded and bullied, then eventually banned.
Thnakfuly things are a little more tolerant and enlightened now.

Not so, but I do notice those who choose to deliberately provoke argument and then hypocritically deny the fact.
