You have got to be a fucking moron if you still think that London is functioning on even a moderate level... I've been all over the world and getting around London nowadays is tantamount to lubing in a third world city... And if you are a fucking cyclist...use your bike to fist yourself you fucking assholes dickheads

Offline ulstersubbie

London is a good city to visit, actually living there is a different matter. Having a high income helps as well.

I live in London and am happy with it. I travel all over the world for work and still like to get back home. Is it the same as it used to be probably not...
Cities evolve over time there are good parts and shitty parts where ever you go. If you have money and live in the best parts it doesn’t matter where you are

Offline WelshClipper

I think a great city is judged on more than simply the ability to move around quickly or not. I am sure its pretty easy to move around Harare or Riyadh without getting arrested or shot.

So where do you recommend is a better city, being as well travelled as you are??

My family's from London and I've still got relatives down there.
It used to be amazing In the 80's and 90's and I was down there most weeks watching football and going to events.

But then gentrification happened and now it's a boring and soulless corporate shit hole full of knife crime and hipster wankers.

It’s always been gentrified compared to anywhere else, obviously you haven’t a clue. Nothing has changed the city is still full of the same types that have always been there. It has evolved like any other city.. there has always been city and hipster wankers.
It’s always been a case of where you are just like any other city

It’s a weird one, where I live, it’s a city (Pre Covid) which had the most people with disposable cash outside London, but I guess people see it for its diversity and differences from other regions in the uk.

Post Brexit & Covid, this may change, I’m seeing this on a personal and business level.

London is such a big diverse city which covers such a large area.. the city is shit and I hope it never recovers so it can become a place where people can live at a reasonable price again..
The boroughs are so diverse and not one is the same so it’s impossible to pool them all together and say it is a shithole

I visit London on business quite often. I enjoy my visits. I also thank God I don't have to live there or work there every day.

Actually I have got a clue so there's no need to be so patronising
What I was trying to explain was that  gentrification may have made things look les edgy and grimy, but it'ds also left a boring, soulless landscape.
No doubt you'll disagree but that's my, take.   :hi:

London was great during the lockdown, few people and fewer cars around, and clean air, a great place to be. The mayor and TfL are doing their best to completely mess the traffic flow up at the moment, but I'd guess most people who were here during lockdown would admit that something needs to be done about the congestion and pollution.

Offline Spacecowb0y

Worked in London and for a while lived in London. Sure it has it's good and bad points, just like every other Metropolis, but to single it out is a twats mistake.
It brings in more to the UK coffers than any other city (or a few combined), so bear that in mind before you chastise it for being a victim of it's own economic success.
I miss the buzz of the place and like to entertain up there, when able

Offline robsmith149

Great place for a visit but if someone offered me rent free accommodation for life in a million pound house there  i would say no thanks and carry on paying rent where i live now.

Offline Spacecowb0y

The lockdown has given London a chance to breath, and look at alternative modes of transport. We can't continue to have single driver cars clogging the roads as some would prefer.

Who pissed on your chips?

I have worked in 55 countries and God knows how many cities. Lived in London for 40 years, and I don't think it's as pleasant as it once was. Nor was it ever as friendly as Lancashire where I came from. But it's absurd to say it's that bad.

Try getting around in New York - the most confusing subway system imaginable, hardly any buses, traffic jams everywhere, property prices even more insane than London ... but cheaper than Mumbai, which is hellish.

I live in Bristol now: better, but getting worse.

Offline Blackpool Rock

But was London actually ever the greatest city on earth  :unknown:

I mean what actually makes a city or for that matter any other place great  :unknown:

I don't like London but then again I don't tend to like any cities much or anywhere that there is a large population as i prefer countryside and wide open spaces; fields; rivers; woods; sea views etc (And I am aware that there are actually plenty of river walks and parks etc in London if you make a point of visiting them but you know what I mean)

Offline binbag

Lots of people, who aren't twats or morons, really like London and that's the problem. If enough people didn't like it they'd leave or stop coming to London and then there'd be less overcrowding, less congestion and house prices and rents would drop. I'm a Londoner who left decades ago (cos I didn't like it) and there were always gentrified areas. I remember when Lewisham used to be a bit 'posh' and Islington was almost a slum area. As someone said above, cities change and bigger cities have bigger changes. I'm delighted I left and every time I go back to visit firends and family there (most of whom are not twats or morons) I'm even more delighted to be living elsewhere.

In my sporting life I have played in every continent across the globe (Antarctica excepted) and many countries within each, and hence seen many cities.  I don't live in London but I actually do believe it is the greatest city in the world - qualified slightly, as I accept that for the less well heeled it doesn't have the same attraction.

Perhaps I am a twat?  But this is just my opinion.

No it doesn't make you a twat and you are entitled to your opinion but as I asked earlier what makes anywhere great  :unknown:

Logically everyone's answer will be slightly different as again it's all down to personal opinion and likes / dislikes

I've always lived within a few miles of the coast and that's what I like whereas i've known Londoners who were teens / early 20's who moved to more rural areas with their parents and the younger people hated it due to the piece and quiet  :dash:
I also once rented a room to a guy from London who said he found it hard to sleep as there wasn't traffic going past all night long, FFS that just sound mad to me but I guess it's just what you're used to and what an individual finds to be their comfort zone.

Someone asked me what I was doing when I had a week off and I said just chilling; go to the gym a bit more and / or get out for some long bike rides in the countryside.
They then tried telling me I should go somewhere for the week instead and suggested a city break such as Barcelona, no thanks i've been to Barcelona a few times on business and fucking hated it due to being rammed with too many people
Eventually ended up telling them i'd rather cancel my holiday and come to work than visit a city for a week as I find them really stressful

And whats with the anti cyclist vibe.
Driving in london has become so horrendous recently with all the congestion charging , speeding cameras , 20mph cctv etc etc its actually good to get on the bike and not worry about getting a fine thru the door if you accidentally go thru a red light or contravene some ridiculous local by-law intended just to fine unsuspecting motorists.

Yes this great city has caveats over last 20 years due to lack of moral discipline due to featherweight law enforcement.. and pansy sissy human rights nonsense.
And yes and factual negative immigration...

Some truly nice cities of the world:
Berlin
Geneva
Auckland
Osaka
Edinburgh

2nd tier:
Singapore

There’s other cities I like for various personal reasons and probably other great cities I have not visited; London is still a ‘world player’ (just) but I wouldn’t choose to live there again. Same for New York and Tokyo.

Precisely.
What the hell sponsored OP's OTT outburst?  :unknown:

Berlin is (just about) a decent city with an acceptable standard of life; gentrification has moved in there - just like any metropolis. They're all constantly evolving; by nature, that's what all organisms do. It involves good and not so great aspects.
Try dealing with the traffic in Sao Paolo. Or, Bangkok.

Good call, although I’ve not visited Japan yet - if I did I think my first stop would be Kyoto.

I’d also put Lisbon in amongst my 1st tier.

With all due respect I think you misunderstood or misread my comments: they were neither homophobic nor racist; indeed the opposite. They pointed out a) that a great Englishman was not racist at a time when many were and b) that homosexuality has always been with us.
