There were traces in sewage samples in Barcelona from last March, traces in samples from Italy around November/December and now Brazil has found traces in their sewage samples from November so it suggests this thing has been around a lot longer than we thought.

Sorry, didn't mean to react so aggressively. I just get annoyed with the poor level of journalism these days that just seems intent on being the first to break the story, without caring if it turns out to be right or not. The corona virus reporting over the past 8 months has been rife with it.

I read a few articles around the time this news first broke explaining how this sewage testing is the next big idea in how to fight Covid19. So several organisations wanted to be the first to make a break through. They were each basing their testing on an unproven theory. It doesn't test for the virus itself. It tests the sewage for bits of RNA which could exist after the Covid-19 virus has passed through someones digestive system. Unfortunately these bits and pieces of RNA could also have belonged to any number of other pathogens. And they are trying to find miniscule amounts of it in gallons of sewage contaminated with all sorts of stuff. The current testing processes used on infected people are not 100% accurate and they take samples of the actual virus DNA (not mangled RNA) directly from infected mucus. So at the moment, this new process is at best just an idea for how outbreaks could be detected and monitored in the future.

The few positive results that were reported had not been verified. If it really had been present back then, in large enough volumes to be detected in sewerage, it should have been detectable in several samples spread over a period of time in a specific location. Not just one on odd days in several unrelated locations. It's just as likely these post grad university researchers each got the same false results from the flawed testing process, got over excited at the thought of being credited with a breakthrough and leaked their results to other over excited journalists.

I can't find the articles I read back then. But if you you want to search online and read a few scientific articles there are some which reveal the bits and pieces of this story and the science behind it. Although maybe time will show these are actually the incorrect reports.
