Author Topic: Who was the best James Bond never to get the gig?  (Read 4664 times)

No. Too well known and too one dimensional in my opinion.

Tom Ellis (Lucifer) would be my choice, although hes 41 now so maybe a bit old.

Recent newspaper talk suggests otherwise saying Tom Hardy is very much in the frame to be the next James Bond.

I don't think being too well known is a problem. The last unknown actor to play Bond was George Lazenby. It didn't exactly work out well for him. He only lasted 1 film. Moore and Brosnan were quite well known when they took over the role.

He doesn't have much box office behind him in action roles but has brawn and can play varied parts.

But one reason Daniel Craig worked was because he was so unexpected, until Bond he'd largely featured in dramas.

Lazenby actually told the producers during filming that he wouldnt be doing any more. His agent talked him out of accepting the extending contract they wanted to offer him. Told ghm there was no future in Bond films. Most Bond afficianados rate On Her Majestys Secret Service as one of the best Bond films despite Lazenbys acting limitations. The story is great and the action sequences amongst the best in the series. His fight scenes were the best alongside Connery in From Russia With Love (train fight with Grant). Lazenby was certainly a more convincing Bond than Moore in my opinion.

Layer Cake got him the role.

Said to have been screen tested for Bond more than any other actor, I think Michael Billington - perhaps best known as Paul Foster in UFO - would have been great. He did have a small role in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Is agre with all of that. Also the cinematography is superb particularly the opening sequence and the helicopter assault on Piz Gloria.

Great cinematography - apart from the speeded up fight sequences that is ;)

I hope he sacked his agent.  :dash:

King Tarzan is be the obvious omission as James Bond.  Who is better qualified to oversee the "Bond Girls'" auditions?

Very true. Thee were some serious continuity errors, especially during the beach fight which, ironically, set the tone for his 'physical' take on Bond. Diana Rigg is just the most stunning Bond girl and Telly Savalas a great Blofeld.

I think he later regretted the decision. It would have been interesting to see him going forward with the character. The next few films would have been radically different.

Boris Johnson would be brilliant as the next bond. That blond hair and bumbling style is just right for bond to draw a whole new type of fan.

My mate bought a signed photo of Ronnie Barker and I bought one of Ronnie Corbett, both for 50p. So it was a good buy for me and a good buy for him.

I give you Barry Nelson was a yank but hardly well known for playing the part.
