Subheader- who would you have liked to see playing him even if never offered the gig?

I remember a story from years ago where it was offered to Burt Reynolds but he turned it down. He later went onto say it was one of the biggest regrets of his career. Whether that 's true or not I really have no idea as he was rarely off-screen in the 70's and certainly upto the mid 80's.

I think he would've been fantastic, obviously it would mean Bond was no longer British and came from the deep south of America instead but I could've lived with that.

Imagine him giving that huge cunt with metal dentures a slap then shagging Grace Jones after charming her out of her knickers.

Don't know if I could imagine him doing anything other than an American accent though?

Yeah, but that's what I said. Burt never did accents other than maybe shifting between Georgia, Texas, Loiusiana or the like.

Surprised no-one has come up with Alan Bennett yet really.

He was actually Alec Trevelyan '006' in Goldeneye. And in true Shaun Bean style, died, when he fell off a massive fuck off satellite dish which thenexplided and fell on top of him.

Ewen Mcgregor; he's played both Obi-Wan and Danny Torrance, therefore, he has the ability to fit into classic roles and make them his own

Definitely not Sam Neil, who's a great actor nevertheless.

Two that always came to mind were Lewis Collins and Clive Owen.

With Dianne Abbott as Pussy Horror :scare:

You just want to see her coming out of the sea in that skimpy bikini.

I heard Collins was the favourite for the job, but turned up at the interview wearing a tracksuit and Roger Moore turned up looking suave in a suit. Don’t know if it was true.

Both fine efforts, Collins in particular would've been great after finishing The Professionals and perhaps saved Sir Rog's blushes in the latter films. Mind you, I don't expect he gave much of a fuck beyond the coin.

He may have been American but Steve McQueen, if you wonder why watch Bullitt.

Dunno, I'm struggling with McQueen. Just doesn't have than underlying danger for me.

I think he was interviewed to replace Roger Moore in the early 80s. Moore ended up staying on for a couple more films.

I always thought he was a bit of a wimp TBH - if we're looking at Trainspotting, maybe Robert Carlyle's Begbie would fit.  :D

Kevin McKidd , good actor can be a cold killer and is Scottish like James Bond.

He's too old now but how about a pre-Batman Christian Bale?

Would've owned it and quite possibly knocked it on a bit. Then done some Arty stuff to cleanse his soul.

Has Sean Bean ever made a film or starred in a tv series  where he hasn't been killed . :unknown: (I can only think of one and that was Sharpe)

Not sure about that? I heard Cubby Broccoli found Collins screen test " too aggressive" and so turned him down.
Interestingly, this was pretty much how Ian Fleming described Sean Connery after seeing Dr No.  :hi:

Something that pisses me off is the way that everytime a British actor dons a dinner jacket in an action drama, the press wet their collective pants, with "Could this be the next James Bond?"

This happened with Tom Hiddleston after he was in "The Night Manager", and with Richard Madden after he was in "Bodyguard". Shut up and fuck right off!

Incidentally, I believe the first James Bond was Bob Holness, on the radio. My name is Bond... James "Can I have a P please, Bob" Bond.

Did you know Sean Bean has been married five times? Five! He must be a serial adulterer or have a short attention span.

Apparently the first thing he asks when offered a new script is "am I killed off?" and if the answer is "yes" he turns it down.

You've seen Cannonball Run and Smokey & the Bandit haven't you? He got a bit silly in the middle of his career and whilst he can do edgy/serious (e.g. Deliverance) he hasn't got the cold bastard streak that is a prerequisite for Bond IMO. He becomes a comic book character otherwise like Adam West's Batman. I think Idris Elba could do a good job, but he's getting on a bit. That said he's younger than Craig.

What’s this to do with Steve McQueen?

Nothing. Just pointing out to OP that Burt Reynolds doesn't have "underlying danger" which seems to be one of his key criteria. Perhaps I should have explicitly mentioned Burt's name but I thought reference to his films woulds have been enough for OP. My bad if you misunderstood.

Formby.... George Formby!.   Dandelion and Burdock...... Shaken not stirred!

Sorry... The lockdown and 30 degrees is finally getting to me..... I'll go and have a lie down. :(

I do like my steak cooked on a George Formby grill. It turns out nice again every time.

Offline MilleMiglia

New Zealander David Warbeck, probably best known for his work with Lucio Fulci (although most will have unknowingly seen him as the Milk Tray man when the ads were at their peak), was apparently on standby later in the Roger Moore era, in case Moore's financial demands became excessive.

Yeah, well I know he got typecast in the comedy action type films and wasn't really taken seriously for a decade or so until his return in Boogie Nights. But I think you underestimate him, he would've been well capable of pulling off the menace required for the role.

Bookmakers William Hill offered odds of 20-1 on the US star. "The idea of a black Bond seems to be catching on," said a spokesman for the betting firm, who also offered 20-1 odds on Denzel Washington. Lenny Henry was an outsider at 25-1.

The idea of a first female 007 was also entertained. William Hill offered odds of 50-1 on Emma Thompson, and 100-1 on Sharon Stone.

The bookies' favourite was Pierce Brosnan at 2-1, with Nigel Havers at 10-1.

as for Bond actors Ian Fleming wanted Richard Burton to play Bond, but Broccoli and Saltzman had other ideas.
