So what industries should/can the UK improve post Brexit to make us great again?

Indicate why you think it's worth it, what can be done, requiring what kind of effort and investment and any particular reason why we'd be good at it or best placed as a supplier to the World.

This is a chance, particularly for the trolls to put their brains where their mouths are, avoid a deluge of shit, make a positive contribution to the debate and "heal the wounds of the political divide", unless they believe in a disunited Britain or worse.

I don't think that's an inflammatory or provocative post, at all   ;)

Well I do not agree with the first line, I believe we remain a great country.

Speaking for my little part of business we did not want Brexit but have already moved on and are doing our bit to make the best of things despite the macro conditions. Obviously at the moment that is a challenge!

We have some fantastic youngsters in the country whose abilities, ideas and energy are inspirational. If we can back their business ideas we have a bright future. I really enjoy dealing with them and it helps me to survive dealing with the old farts and doomsayers.

now that Brexit is going to happen, the gvt needs to get a good eal, in order to move the country and forward and support small business who are the future to make the UK has competitive has possible

We need to improve our economy by supporting business and improve the prospects and living standards of all the people, particularly education, health and housing.
Brexit has happened and we need to make it a success for everyone not just the super rich so let's stop banging on about independence and sovereignty and start working to create a better Britain for all. We need to reach a deal with the EU and walking away without one because of political dogma will be an act of economic self harm.

Well there are more talks happening again today, officially we have until the end of this month to agree an extension which I can't see Boris agreeing to and in fact all that would happen is the can gets kicked down the road further.

Going forward we need some decent investment in basic infrastructure but it all costs money and a lot of it which is going to be increasingly in short supply due to CV19, our roads are an utter disgrace

We need to look at future technologies and what generates high margin returns, as is the case now we can't compete on cheap items as it's far cheaper to get it made in China / Far East.
I read an article last week about green energy and it indicated that the UK is the world leader in generating power from offshore wind turbines however i'm not sure how much of the plant we actually make in this country

This country has led the world in innovation over the last 150 or so years but despite a flying start we have let it slip, the big curse of British industry for generations has been lack of investment to update equipment.
It's like all the times you hear about some remarkable Victorian machine which is 125 years old and still making 10 parts a minute, cutting edge when it was originally made but the EE now have new machines churning out ten times that  :dash:

Nissan has been mentioned on another thread and big business like this are threatening to leave if the WTO 10% tariffs are implemented, the Govt could probably tempt them to stay if they agree to make up any loss but are we then actually raking in any revenue from them  :unknown:
Probably still worth it if they were going anyway as it keeps people in jobs plus all the support industries.

It could be that we need to either lower corporation tax to compensate or provide incentives for new companies to move here or stay here such as paying for new factories to be built

Part of the problem is that our manufacturing base has dropped significantly and we are now too reliant on the service sector, too many eggs in one basket so to speak and if the finance sector decides to jump ship we're fucked  :scare:

When it comes down to it I don't see any other way than lowering your tax take which obviously reduces your revenue unless you reduce it to the level where it attracts enough new business to make up the short fall

Irrespective of Brexit, our aim should be to become as self sustainable as possible.

We have been net importers of food and power for far too long and this makes us totally dependent on others and therefore prey to their whims - eg the demands over chlorinated chicken. We have an opportunity to really invest in meaningful employment and I'd favour smaller sized units spread over the country instead of the monopoly megaliths we currently have. Think micro-breweries vs the big brewing conglomerates.

Of course, non of this comes free and it'll need to be supported by an ethos that prides quality over quantity and a reduction in the obsession with things being super cheap and therefore disposable.

I was dismayed at the whole Brexit campaign and outcome but it's reality and if we're going to make something of it we need to be realistic about our current place in the world. Industrial giant we aren't and won't be again.

Unfortunately,  it looks as though the only member of the cabinet who has been involved in supply and demand is George Eustice who was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on 13 February 2020.
Boris and his mates have no idea as regards the issues surrounding products such as Chlorinated Chicken from Trumps cuckoo land.
I think Eustice is a farmer. He will know all about subsidies!!
