Not sure how your reply relates to my post?

Look at the number of guests on the system vs members. I  assume a lot of the guests would like to join?

Edit....seems the numbers normally shown have disappeared?

You keep forgetting it was OldAdmin who binned off topic and for the very reasons this thread is necessary. The few with the extremist views, both left and right, are the ones who spoil it, they just can't help themselves.

Then you have the ones who think the rules don't apply to them and post whatever anyway.

I agreed with 90125's proposal to bring off topic back, though I had hoped it would be a place for like minded people to have a bit of light hearted craic about CV-19 or anything else not related to punting. Unfortunately it's gone down a similar road as the last one and turned into somewhat of a war zone.

Personally I would like to keep off topic, for now at least, though I would go with keeping religion, race and politics out of it. Those three subjects can never be agreed on, no matter what one person says it will not convince the other and the continued battles to do so are where the problems stem from.

I'm sure there are plenty of other places where such subjects could be discussed at will.

I tend to agree generally, although Old Admin binned it because he got tired of the amount of extra work it gave him, rather than the subjects of discussions. He wanted an easier life and that’s why he started to streamline and make it easier for him to run..
That’s why Helpers and Mods appeared but he just got fed up in the end..

Ridiculous idea. Assume this is supposed to be a bit of a joke??

Who decides who is a leftie and who is cool?

And to quote you and Mr Brown, who decides what are ‘extreme’ views? I know you are referring to me, but equally your opinions might be ‘extreme’ to me.
For example, why is a concern about unlimited immigration, which is shared by millions, regarded as an ‘extreme’ view? It could equally be advocated that supporting unlimited immigration is an extreme opinion.

Personally I cannot see what is wrong with the old system - anything and everything should be allowed, apart from personal abuse and anything that could bring the site into disrepute, in other words things that are already illegal.

And as has been said, those who don’t want off topic are not compelled to read it.

Offline winkywanky

Perhaps as Kev I think suggested earlier: members apply to be allowed access to Off-Topic.

If you don't apply you don't get access  :unknown:.

And in the same vein I'll add my own idea to that: if you post shit or get abusive and break the rules, get banned from Off-Topic only. (Or if the abuse were so heinous, the ban could be full if desired by the management)

How's that for a classic British compromise? (Despite that cunt in London with a poster that said Britain invented racism. Fucking imbecile ).

Is this doable from a technical standpoint?

The problem was the subjects of the discussions, they are what gave him the extra work. Without the controversial topics the problems are greatly reduced.

How is that relevant to the existence of off topic? Until membership opens up we have the same number of members with off topic or not.

Before COVID-19 we had a healthy number of reviews and punting discussions. That will continue as the membership returns to punting.

He was on serious wind down, I saw the deleted threads and there were very few from off topics, most banning were from fake reviews and touting...
It was an easy option it.
Old Admin liked total control and didn’t really trust his helpers and liked to have the final decision, but then found he didn’t want to invest the time into doing this anymore, which is why he passed the sites on to someone else..

From what I recall OldAdmin saying once. He actually owned and admin'd 10 forums simultaneously. 8 had nothing to do with punting. And 2 related to punting. And it was only one of the 10 he had serious issues with its members and what sucked all of his interest and joy out of running forums and wanted to get out of them as a result. And I can tell you now, controversial offtopic and all. It wasn't this forum. He actually said this forum was easy to run compared to the problematic one. I am not allowed to say which one of the 10 it was due to the rules here, but all I say is, guess....

This forum has been around for one month off 10 years now. Admin had been the owner of it since January 2013. But prior to that he was a moderator when Nik owned it. So Admin has been around running this forum since the very beginning. We have not had any issues in that time with offtopic.

In terms of the forum helpers thing. There were way too many. Twice I got set as a helper when I didn't ask for it nor want the control. Looking at people, I seem to be one of the only few people on the forum not designated as a "forum helper". The whole forum it feels like were mini-mods at one point. Everyone you look at with more than a few hundred posts has been set as a forum helper. That's too many people with powers.

I hope it always stays true to the core ethos of putting the punter first though, as opposed to being a promotion site for service providers, which is what all other paid sex forums were, even those purporting to be about the interests of the punter.

However since covid 19 and lockdown, and very few have been posting reviews, its been fun and interesting to view read and comment on off-topic subjects,
and there have been many interesting and varied topics to choose from, there is a huge diversity of interesting people on here,we should all share and enjoy everyones knowledge

If we are not going to get new members I don’t really think we want to get rid of many more  :unknown:

Even if people aren’t actively punting at the moment it would be a shame to lose that wealth of past experience..

I'm amazed how many people seem to welcome such detailed levels of control and censorship.

We get enough of that IRL, as it were, in modern Britain. This place has always been somewhere where people can express views and get into debates about things, and speak freely because they're anonymous.

Yes, things get a bit heated at times, but not that often.

Then of course, there are those who bleat that you shouldn't be able to post on off-topic, or you should have limited access until you have posted 'x' number of reviews. IMO that's childish and petty.

In my experience, a place like this will find its own level all by itself. And it seems to have done that, with the very light touch that is applied by the owners/Mods. I don't see any reason to change anything, and if topics such as religion and politics are removed, what are we left with? Knitting? What's on TV? Cars? Comparing penis size or how many women we've shagged?

That is exactly the right attitude for someone who has little interest in it. I cannot understand  people wanting it removed.
I have never punted abroad, at least not since pre internet days, consequently I have barely ever read the punting abroad section, however I am aware of its importance for many members.

As it was my idea to bring back the Off Topic Board here is my take.

With no FR's being made Forum activity would have started to dry up and we would have had a constant battle moderating threads not related to Punting or members pushing their luck. When punting returns there shouldn't be a need for it and the focus of the Forum should be on FR's. Aren't there plenty of other social media platforms to discus the price of fish.

Further, do we really need members whose only contribution is in the Off Topic Board.

This sums it up perfectly for me.

I am a loud and proud 'leftie' and have contributed to off topic on occasion. However, after a bit of posting ping pong, I realised that there was no discussion, rather a statement of well entrenched views. A number of these were becoming tedious and offensive which is why OT disappeared first time round.

I thought that the forum became much better without it as a number of the bullyboys used it as a means of increasing their post count so they could pretend they were credible.

Off-Topic was bought back because of a lack of punting.
Should Off-Topic stay or go or be further restricted topic wise or have no restrictions at all?

Keep it but just keep religion and political views off it . In the past the off topic category used to degenerate into arguements and slanging matches. It seems a lot better now. Everbody seems to have calmed down a bit. Besides there are some good topics and even helpful tips posted on it now.

Personally i think its a shame that discussion of race , religion etc has effectively been shut down because a few people would rather discussion didnt happen at all rather than opinions they personally dont agree with get aired , such as the question of immigration . And opposing unlimited immigration is a valid opinion and is not extreme and its shared by alot of immigrants aswell.
Its a shame there wernt more lefty contributors willing to put the counter argument to KN and Nik in an intelligent way rather than just trying to stifle debate by calling everything extreme.
But at the same time i can understand it must be a pain for admin to deal with , i dont know if admin has read all of off-topic but with all the smoke he must think theres a burning fire of racism and extremism which i dont think there is , or ive missed it except for one post in the Eid Mubarak topic which was deleted by admin sharpish and ftr was not by NIK or KN any of the posters lamely labeled as extreme. .
Personally i think off topic is good as a communal watering hole while covid is still about and i support the no extremist or racism rule but i would calibrate judgement at a more sensible impartial level rather than at a Beamer level , no disrespect to Beamer obviously but there needs to be some level of discussion allowed without being labelled extreme.
And where clear infractions do occur like with the post in Eid Mubarak just ban the person from off topic , maybe 1 week first then 1 month. But also ban people for false accusations of extremism because thats also wrong.

Offline whiskyfan

It's a useful diversion and will help to retain members while punting is on hold for many, probably for the next few months at least.
Off topic was often a bit of a war zone under old admin and seems like it's been going the same way since it was reopened. Anyone who can't see that is probably part of the current problem.
IMO, going forward, whatever rules are set for off topic, there should be a zero tolerance for anyone who breaks them. No out right banning from the site, other than for very serious offences, but a simple revoking of their rights to post/view off topic would be sufficient. The handful of main trouble makers are already obvious from the deleted and locked threads so shouldn't need any further warnings. That way they can still contribute to punting topics and post reviews and if some leave the site as a result of being excluded then they obviously had no intention of doing that and are no great loss.

This is a punting forum. There are people who observe the postings with a very different agenda to ours. Imagine the ammunition they gain when they can hold up off topic conversations as being representative of the punter mindset. You can't deny that some threads have sailed close to the wind in the past and it's ludicrous to suggest that they won't do so in the future. When punting returns it should be removed.

Whatever someone's political bias etc, there are too many threads which just descend into nasty, vitriolic slanging matches that don't lend to the argument and just seem to further entrench people's extreme views.

Offline Belgarion

I personally don't mind Off Topic too much. It allows particular characters reveal their true nature. Some people use it to vent about how the country is changing and how life has passed them by. It can be very therapeutic for them.

Wake up, hear something on the radio or read a headline and without context; start ranting and raving about this or that revealing their inner snowflake.

Off Topic can be challenging for newer members but those of us that have been here for a while, know that some use it when they cannot access the Daily Mail or Express comments section.

There are certain things people have entrenched views upon. And Religion and Politics are those two. You are not going to convince someone to suddenly vote labour if they've dedicatedly voted conservative all their lives.

But those reading the two people talking who are on the fence, you may convince them. People read posts. It is not just those two who are debating. That is the point of debating. Not to win over the other side. But to win over the undecided viewers

We've already had an out of the box suggestion so how about another -

OT is an add on to the sites main purpose of punting therefore surely it should be viewed as a bonus or privilege to those who contribute and help other punters which is after all the ethos of the site, so -

Make everybody apply to view / post in OT along with a justification of why they should be admitted to the club, some CV's may be thin

Alternatively put it behind a pay wall and see how badly people actually want it  :hi:

I'd agree with this about those with entrenched views on both sides not changing and the potential for those on the fence to perhaps come down on one side or the other.
Personally I often have conflicting views on many things and I can certainly agree with some of the sentiment at the heart of the arguments made by those who are labelled as extreme on here.
However the vitriol in the posts of the more right wing posters simply serves to ensure I tend to come down on the left side, essentially it's not so much the subject or opinion of the poster but how their message is communicated that helps form an opinion of the type of person making the post.

You say this, but my experience is, you get very certain pathetic lowlifes, who I won't name, follow you around the whole entire main board of the forum in every topic you post in derailing it saying "he said this once in offtopic". Every topic. This was also when offtopic was locked down to posters who had made a few hundred posts by oldadmin so many couldn't see it.

But people doing that are just clear trolls. So the trolls shouldn't ruin things for the masses. But I am just mentioning it as its one form of serious trolling that occurs due to offtopic and why whats said in offtopic should remain in offtopic and not paraded around the whole forum in every topic.

I don't see any reason to change anything, and if topics such as religion and politics are removed, what are we left with? Knitting? What's on TV? Cars? Comparing penis size or how many women we've shagged?

It appears that your desire is to belittle anyone that disagrees with your view.

The clearly stated objective of the owners is shown in Rule1
i.e. Site ethos / mission.
This Forum puts the interests of Punters first through the sharing of Reviews.

You have not added a review for 5 years and when challenged, tried to dismiss this by your "pissing in a pot" comments.

Even if you have a sensible point to make, your credibility is then blown away by your post on May 05, reproduced below .....

Yes, I am here to wind everyone up.
The plan is obviously working.

What value is any Off-Topic subject other than the banal if your clear objective is to "wind people up"?
This makes a mockery of any rational argument to keep Off-Topic and risks the UKP reputation being devalued.
There are many forums that do not have the market leading SP review section that UKP enjoy.
It is therefore easy to see why the owners are moving carefully to protect such an important asset.

It's called 'toxic vitriol' (which you never get from the left!)   :sarcastic:

In my experience, you only get it from them. Doxing is an act the left developed in a means to get revenge onto the right for simply holding views they disagree with. The right, don't ever do a thing, ever.

Interesting views and agree with the overall premise. If people are actively punting and sharing intel and advice, they should be able to access OT.

Last thing we need is for some to give the mods work to do,  when the same folk don't contribute to the punting side of the forum.

Would make sure we have up to date valuable punting intel as opposed to views of yesteryear, similar to the usual "OT vitriol".

I read all sorts of comments on here like this. They're usually from people towards the left of the spectrum, and often towards the very left end of the spectrum.

Opponents are always classed as venters. As extremists. As members of the Far Right (whatever that is, no-one seems able to classify it accurately.) As fascists, racists, bullybooys, Daily Mail readers, and all the rest of it.

But then when challenged on those comments, answer comes there none. I was accused of being a 'racist' on here by someone, who then point blank refused to explain why he said it.

Before out very eyes in this country, we are seeing the erosion of freedom of speech and expression, and a desire to determine which bits of history are 'approved'. It's always from people from the Left who confront the Centre and demand fealty. 'If you don't support us, you're against us'. So people fall into line because they are scared not to.

Maybe none of this means a rat's to you, but it does to me.

I thought this was the last place that would cave.

You've never got over that, have you.

This is the fourth time you've quoted this back at me.

You know, sometimes I have my tongue so firmly in my cheek, I forget it's there.

Good idea.  :hi:
