I'm just trying to think which came first, because in a perverted way this is very similar to Tubular Bells.

The Intro and the Outro by the Bonzos? I haven't looked it up but I think it came before Tubular Bells.

Underrated? By the Velvet Underground purists who felt Reed's versons of the album were a step too far. and well OTT.

Overrated? By those (like me) who think this is a contender for greatest ever live album - what are the other contenders for this crown?

I always thought Tubular Bells and War of the Worlds to be overrated and too ego driven, neither have a aged well. Typical 1970’s overindulgence.

I have a love hate relationship with Dylan. As a lyricist he is without equal but as a live act he is frustrating to see and always seems to be completely fucked off with his band. His new album is sublime though.

I agree this is best live album ever, saw Lou Reed with the same band at Sheffield City Hall, Intro and Sweet Jane to open the show, Hunter & Wagner twin lead guitars, just awesome.

possibly I have posted this before, or as a big Bowie fan in the same era it is likely I would have gone to see Lou Reed, one of his major influences

Yeah that was great. They really are a fantastic live band but often that doesnt translate well onto a record. In this case it did.

wasn't "Lou Reed Live" the rest of the same concert? They released it as two LPs rather than a double to get more sales

801 Live! - first live LP recorded through the mixing desk
Starless and Bible Black - so well produced no-one realised it was a live recording
Riccochet (Tangerine Dream) most don't realise its live, mainly Coventry cathedral

I believe that is correct, though it was not as good as Rock and Roll Animal, long time since I listened to it

I miss the crazy mad prog indulgences like War of the Worlds - though I only became aware of that album when I briefly had a job selling band gear, and we sometimes played it to demonstrate the modular PA systems we would flog to bands.

Not a big fan of Tubular Bells but I like the original version of War Of The Worlds with the narration of the late great Richard Burton with his amazing voice.

I agree. I really like Justin Hayward's voice on that album too.

Forever Autumn is a great tune, being a massive Burton fan its good to hear his great voice.

Bought tubular bells on vinyl when it first came out. The A side was good but the B side was crap. I thought Ommadawn was a better allround album. Jeff Waynes War of the words was good I thought because it was different at the time.

Totally agree about War Of The Worlds, another album of the time with good cover art as well. I am biased due to Burtons narration though.

One guy learning to play lots of instruments and then using the rudimentary technology that existed at the time to mix them together as 'overindulgence'? I'm struggling to think of another album where an artist has painstakingly stuck to their craft in such a way.
