Thats simply the NHS  core backbone- what used to be the N3 network but is being replaced. But that is simply the link between the individual trusts and CCGs to the central "Spine" where the summary care records are kept. Attached to it are a large number of regional networks. In fact our external feed to the internet as a whole (and so to Microsoft and others) is faster than routing via N3. But not fast enough

One good thing -  its enabled the removal of any remaining Win7 machines. As for XP, the only  ones I've seen for years have been dedicated CCTV installations, and also controlling PCs for x-ray and scanning machines. All air-gapped from the network. FWIW I do know of a Win98 machine at one hospital trust - it holds the kitchen menus and the software can't be upgraded, while some hospitals use standalone Win2000 machines to control PCR analytical systems - again because the software can't be upgraded

Win 7 was released around the time I retired so had been using XP work wise. I recall buying myself a new desktop soon after with Win 7 for home use and thinking how great it was. I actually still have an old Win 7 machine in use as my 'porn' computer. It 'boldly goes' where I wouldn't risk my other devices. 

Not a techie but found it a very reliable operating system despite now being dated. Suspect many small businesses still use it despite no longer any updates?

Rolling out curated updates on a managed network is not an issue for any competent IT organisation.

Network bandwidth is plentiful and cheap. I live in a city and fibre internet has been available to me for over 20 years. A mate of mine in London has had gigabit internet for several years now, and stresses the connection deliberately just to prove he's really getting that speed.

You still see it around a few. Now that version 1909 has been released there's now no real reason to hold back - most of the bugs have gone.

The NHS still have Win7 support for the rest of the year - the Government did a deal with Microshaft

I converted both my Win7 machines to Win10 and was glad I did.

It was a free upgrade from Microsoft, but I don't know whether that offer still stands? Must be over a year ago since I did mine.

Well, well, well. I'm glad I bowed out the the old IT conversation gents. You've lost me, although it has been an interesting debate.
My mate works in an education establishment and there are various layers of communication regarding pupils, teachers, IT dept, etc and apparently he's working with a system that should be in the British Museum and the establishment have no funds to upgrade.

On the plus side thank god they didn't upgrade to Vista 

      That's actually hilarious.   

I'm a bit meh about all of this. I actually like being in the office and doing all the face to face stuff. Especially when Deirdre brings the tea round, and leans forward to place the cup on my desk, her ample bosoms, barely restrained by ill-fitting nylon overalls, brush against my arm, and she asks coquettishly if there will be anything else.

  Going back to orginal thread Transport. 

Public transport will have to be cleaner and more controlled ..simply isn`t at momment Bus Train or Tube.

The Travel/Hoilday industry was moving towards 2 areas  Short stay flights and Crusies ..Both have show problems with both social distance and control The Super Ships which are all now moored up my well suffer long into the furture and maybe end up like the France liner   The checking of aircraft sysytems wise and currency of pilots is going t be a head ache and I amsure this dilema is the cause of the lay offs too. Aircraft were never going to be the furture for mass travel / hoildays and the shipping was moving towards that . Rolls-Royce makers of small nuclar units which make small generators is moving /looking (accoring to newspaper reports ) now look like making thousands redundant 
The big ships of the future will be powered this way its greener by also cheaper Green brigade wont like it though
I think the big thing we will see is more delivery vans maybe electric for the work at homers...Zoom is shite every time ive used it drops out a few of us 1st time with 3 it was great but now

Looks like in future if you want to use the London tube you will have to pre-book a ticket like intercity trains, there is also a big push from Khan and Johnson to put in even more cycle lanes. Working from home, or paid holidays as its been known as until now, will be actively encouraged.
