Dont understand why WWE is shown on sports channels . It's all  choreographed before hand which you can tell a mile off. How can anybody can take wrestling serious. It might be entertaining but it's certainly not a sport.

It's choreographed, if they did what they do for real people would die. If you want violent then watch MMA known as cage fighting, that is for real.

I miss MMA, cancelled my UFC subscription recently with BT after the cost started to get silly. Enjoyed the period with Mcgregor (good and bad)

WWE is nothing more than glorified gymnastics produced for entertainment, I've been following MMA for years, UFC and the lesser Bellator.

IMO its not a sport, its entertainment, well it isn't for me as I had more than enough of this total shite when my son was growing up, he loved it. He cried when the wrestling company owner Mr McMahon seemingly got killed in 2007, took me hours to convince him it was acting.

Its kinda funny watching it atm due to no crowds, think even the wrestlers feel a bit stupid as so use to trying to get a rise from the crowd.

It's also a bit tricky on a Friday night juggling AEW, Impact and the various WWE franchises, all on at pretty much the same time but different channels.

The best way to describe it would be as sports entertainment. I think you're paying it a great disservice with such a statement. Yes, it is choreographed but extremely taxing on the body. Most wrestlers are on the road for up to 300 days a year. It's a very different sport in its current guise but if you want an indication of how some wrestlers would put their bodies on the line then Mick Foley's performance during his Hell in a Cell match vs Undertaker in 1998 best exemplifies this. Also, Brock Lesnar legit has a wrestling (actual wrestling) background being a former NCAA wrestling champion, which allowed him to transition into the UFC and actually become champion of its heavyweight division.

In my opinion the current product has become quite stale largely in part to it targetting a different demographic and many wrestlers viod of any type of personality. From mid-1996 to 1998 wrestling peaked and the Monday Night Wars made for great TV.

Offline martini2429

It's pure entertainment, it's not a sport, they aren't sportsmen or sportswomen, they are entertainers and it is enjoyable entertainment, I have to admit it's not as good as it used to be, late 90's early 2000's they used to have storylines running for weeks and sometimes months, he hated him and she hated her etc etc, there was the big hate fest between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon, I remember one storyline where HHH got Stephanie McMahon drunk and drove off to Las Vegas and married her while she was still drunk, unbeknown to everyone that they were already married.

Yes it can look violent and yes people do get hurt and injured, moves are mistimed and accidents happen and sadly sometimes die, remember Owen Hart falling from the rafters after an equipment malfunction, I have been to quite a few live shows in London over the years, the first one was Summerslam 5 at Wembley in 1992.

I think anyone who follows the WWE has his (or her) favourite, mine has to be The Undertaker, the bell sounds, the lights go out and the crowd just roars, still send tingles down the spine.

* That is the crux of the matter, my opinion differs and that's what they are, opinions. You obviously enjoy the fake, preplanned aspect of it, I don't.

I remember watching it years ago when Hulk Hogan was top 'performer', he would get beaten up for a while then rip his vest off and win the 'bout'. It was the same every time, boring.

There's no doubt it would be taxing on their bodies but so is football, rugby and many many more sports.

Boxing or MMA  yes, I'll watch that but wrestling, no thanks, I don't like fake anything.

I have never watched any of the new wrestling, but I bet there is always a bad guy/gal that everyone love to hate

Offline HighlyMotivated

It’s soap opera for men. The stories were outrageous and lots of fun in the late 90s/early 00s but since the Benoit murder/suicide they have toned down their content big time and it’s now unwatchable IMO

Back in the day u had WWE, WCW and ECW... good times. But like I say much too watered down these days and seems to be produced exclusively for children and idiots

Of course you are entitled to your opinion. I was just merely pointing out that your comment was a bit of a disservice. It's not for everyone. Plus, you can only be influenced by the era that you've watched, and from you Hulk Hogan comments I can understand your view.

I have come across it since and to be honest it's got worse, there's no denying it's fake, you just can't do some of the things they do and not kill someone. Of course injuries will happen, but they are accidental, the same as gymnasts, footballers and the like get injured accidentally. If someone gets knocked out in boxing or MMA they're actually unconscious, no fakery.

It's on channel 5 now, nobody can tell me that's real fighting, it's not even entertaining it's so fake.

Oh I would agree with you that due to a number of factors it is much worse now. Firstly, WWE has the market share which allows it to determine the product it presents, and like I previously said its traget demographic has changed, leading to a more PG show. Also, I don't think anyone here has suggested that it is real fighting.

Wrestling hit its heights during mid-1996 to 1998. How would I have best described it during that period? Cool. The fact that Dennis Rodman used to skip training with the Chicago Bulls to show up on WCW Nitro in tow with Hollywood Hogan, smoking cigars and walking to the ring whilst Jimmy Hendrix's Voodoo Child plays and Michael Buffer remarks 'Let's get ready to rumble' best exemplifies this.

At that same time you also had ECW who were doing their thing. Due to them having less money than the then-WWF and WCW they had to be more creative, hence their much more edgy and 'extreme' product which definitely blurred the lines.

Those are the two posts I initially responded to, he clearly thinks it's real.

It's produced for entertainment, a bit like Rambo films, loads of action but not real. No harm in those who enjoy it watching it, just it's not for me, I prefer real action.

Every combat sport has it's 'franchise', MMA has UFC as the top one and also Bellator, boxing has several, all of different levels of status.

It's not the WWE, it's a new promotion called AEW. It's pretty decent if you are like pro-wrestling and are sick of the WWE product. The work rates are higher and there's less wrestling WWE way for those in to the scene.

The WWE is now on Channel 5 as a highlights show and on the BT channels for the main shows, however it's probably better to get the WWE streaming service rather than sod about on all the channels.

Yeah. AEW is funded by Shahid Khan (Fulham FC and Jacksonville Jaguars owner) and its attempting to target an older demographic than the WWE. Will be interesting to see how far it can go.

I'm watch it more often if it wasn't on in the middle of the night and the PPV's were shown for free like TNA several years ago. As it is it's a watch it when I feel awake enough show. I like how they've got wrestlers/production crew acting as an audience during the lockdown so tapings. Although it feels a bit small scale similar to the tiny indie promotions it does add some atmosphere as compared to the empty performance centre TV studio the WWE is using.

Give your head a shake mate, it's all put on. I'm not knocking it's entertainment value for those who enjoy it, but accept it for what it is, choreographed and designed to be entertaining.

Have a look at this, it's all real, no faking here, two blokes knocking 7 bells out if each other.

That's the point I've been making all along, it's choreographed entertainment, it isn't real fighting, it's all for show. Look at boxing or MMA, they are fighting for real, they get knocked out, they get cut and it isn't by accident.

Rambo films weren't documentaries, they were made up and made to look real, wrestling is the same, made to look real. Nothing wrong with enjoying watching it, just accept it for what it is, fake fighting for entertainment.

There's a plethora of genuine combat sports, including the likes of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which is used quite a bit in MMA, where the idea is to hurt and stop you opponent with no faking.

However if you want to believe WWE is real then I'll leave you to it.

I don't think at any point I've remarked it as being real. I do agree that you have stated it as being choreographed but you also described it as glorified gymnastics, which I highlighted as somewhat of a disservice. Yes, matches are choreographed and there is a pre-determined winner, but the stunts are certainly real. It's an entirely different product now that I will occasionally observe from a business point of view but the video I linked in was from back in 1998, from which Mick Foley suffered a number of injuries.  At that point in time such stunts would take place on a frequent basis.

Stunts?
The point of a stunt is that people don't get hurt. By definition stunts are fakery
If anyone got hurt for real it means someone fucked up and the planning went wrong

By stunts I mean daring action. Wrestling has always involved certain daring actions that are not completely void of injury or risk.

Becasue there is a demand, and as we all know where there is demand there will be supply. The Rock is an outlier as there was no one before him, and I doubt there will be anyone after him, that will transition into acting and attain his success. Those that watched him during his wrestling days would likey testify that it was always apparent that there was more to him other than wrestling. Also, according to Forbes he was the highest paid actor in 2019, so he must be doing something right!  :unknown:
