In olden days if you were on the receiving end of a hard tackle, the last thing on your mind was to show that you were hurt, as in rugby.

Somewhere along the line, the opposite reaction crept in and now the more theatrics you can display the better.

It's refreshing watching the women's game, where generally speaking, the act more 'manly' than the men,  and also don't argue with the ref as much.

I think it may have been the Replay match, but was that not the Cup Final where Mick Jones fell sideways as he crossed the ball over from the RH touchline, and as he landed on his right elbow it actually bent the wrong way? I was only 10yrs old at the time but I nearly threw up.

And I'm sure they played a slo-mo of it too

Mick Jones' injury was in the 1972 final (Leeds 1 Arsenal 0). He crossed the ball, as you say, and Allan Clarke headed in the winning goal from that cross.

Surely the most famous incident of a player continuing after a serious injury is Bert Trautman, the German ex P.O.W. who was playing in goal for Manchester City v Birmingham in the 1956 F.A. cup final. With 17 minutes left to play, he bravely dived down at the feet of one of Birmingham's fowards and suffered a broken neck.

Amazingly, he continued playing, even diving again at players feet and clashing into forwards.

When collecting his medal, he had to hold his head to stop it falling to one side.

Ian Callaghan of Liverpool fractured his collar bone in the third minute of the 1965 FA Cup Final. It was before the idea of substitutes and he played on throughout the match carefully holding his arm.

Mick Jones was one of the most underrated players ever. Would Clarke have scored the goals he did without Jones? Whilst Clarke also had plenty of England caps did Jones get any?

I remember my first match at Stoke. We had a team talk and (manager Alan Ball) said, 'The first corner we get, play it to the far post and get the knock-down'. I put my hand up and said, 'Gaffer, if you float the first corner on top of the keeper I’ll smash him and he’ll never come for another cross again'. Bally looked around the dressing room and said, 'OK, we’ll do that'. And we did!
