Dept of Health didn't want the Turkey PPE shipment publicised - they were overruled by Number 10 (i.e. Scummings) as they wanted some good news to throw out as the press conference of the day. Cue the following week of fuck ups, eventual delivery of a smaller than requested shipment and now finding the important stuff was shite they had bought unseen.

Assuming the gowns were needed (and they were/are) there is a big hole in the supply.

This is an apocalyptic level of ineptitude.

Perhaps it's just another good reason why Turkey were never let into the EU

I wouldn't trust Erdogan as far as I could throw him.

They've opened a factory in Cramlington (Northumberland) to manufacture gowns, with "The mixture of volunteers and paid workers aim to produce around 6,000 gowns a week."

What does everyone expect from a bunch of chancers who have been winging it since day one. There figures are produced by Pritti Patel and to all but the sycophants are clearly wrong.

They lied about it being ordered, lied about its delivery date then kept they where defective for weeks.

How many more people have to die because of there inability to operate as a credible, caring and competent government serving it's people.

Well there have been fuck-ups all round. The gowns weren't fluid repellent therefore not suitable for the NHS.  Not rocket science. You buy from a manufacturer you ask from a certificate of conformity with EN 13795:2019.  Same thing when it comes to 3 ply non woven masks - fluid repellent with the required EN numbers.  Bunch of morons sitting in government.  As to buying from China, again very easy. Similar process to our company - have a QC person sitting there handling the finance, shipping date & quality.  Yes you pay around 10% more for someone to handle this but at least when the goods land here, it has met the required standards and not a sub-standard product.

Re the gowns, it is pretty obvious the cover-up.  They didn't have or couldn't obtain the goods therefore they changed their guidance from gowns to aprons. It was exposed by Panorama.

This woman is a liability along with Hancock.  They should be removed from any decision making, but I suspect that any changes won't be made until the crisis is over.

Agree with having people on the ground etc but regarding certification i've also dealt with Chinese companies and asked if they comply with XYZ regulations only to get a reply back asking me to state what I wanted the paperwork to say and they would write one  :scare:

There are a lot of really good Chinese companies out there but there's also an awful lot of shit ones and you need to weed them out, I won't go into some of the horror stories that i've heard from people who have done factory visits / audits

Been there, seen and done that. Sometimes it is to the buyer's benefit where the end customer is just demanding paper for the sake of it (sodding RoHS/REACH/Conflict Mineral regs) but never in anything safety critical.

Barbour of South Shields turned to producing PPE in early April, making between 1000 and 1500 per day and are doing twice daily deliveries.   A local engineering firm have designed and donated specialist machinery to help.

In Yorkshire there using a couple of bin bags with holes cut in for the head; arms and legs then holding it together with elastic bands and sticky tape, apparently it's cheaper

Yeah I heard that on the news and thought "why is there VAT on PPE anyway"
When originally introduced VAT or Value added tax was only supposed to be applied to luxury goods

No this is incorrect. It was originally intended by its designers to apply to everything so that it would not cause economic imbalances purely from the incidence of taxation. This never completely happened as varying rates incl. zero were applied. It was the previous purchase tax regime that sometimes targeted luxury goods e.g. washing machines (which were then regarded as a luxury!)

I’ve yet to experience that thankfully. The difference like most things in life is price, those made by a manufacturer according to EN charge more whether or not there is a pandemic.  If you want accreditation for product or services then that will naturally incur additional cost.   I don’t agree with the assumption we can make it here cheaply without massive subsidies. Those that are doing it now won’t be interested when normal life resumes.  I’m of the belief we should outsource factories to European countries like we do with a lot of automotive factories. Labour & running costs are both cheaper, easier to import raw material and no issue to get it here.

Channel 4 News (@Channel4News) Tweeted:
"It's possibly the case that they may not be able to get an immediate test on that day, but they should be able to get one quickly."
