But the current management don't seem to have quite the same spunk as the one which dealt with (I believe) the SARS outbreak in China in the early noughties, where the female Norweigan Head (can't remember her name) of the WHO took a much more proactive role.

Yes I know the USA is a higher total but as a percentage of the population it's appalling and they are even lying about the total numbers. Can't even get all the old people they are sacrifacing in the care homes into the fugures. We have not peaked yet they say we have the figures don't and our deaths are going to be well past 20k unless they continue massaging them.

Our housing market will still be an investment paradise for Russians, Chinese, etc, rather than ..... housing for UK residents, again thanks to Lord Soandso.

US is no 9, again if you exclude poxy places like Sint Maarten, Luxemburg and the Channel Islands.

I can't find it now but I did read an article a few years back about the problems of the UN and its associated bodies which said that generally speaking the tendency was to appoint figureheads from developing countries as a kind of token window dressing but that the main bureaucracy was the more familiar diplomatic class of white well bred (or foreign equivalents) officials who all went to the same universities and thought the same way.  It said that such jobs had perks beyond your wildest dreams of global high class jetsetting etc.

There's been numerous scandals in those organisations eg. sexual exploitation by peace-keeping troops and aid workers which were hushed up for years because such spineless twerps didn't want their cosy racket tumbled (ie. think the BBC suits' indifference to the crimes of the living Sir Jimmy but on a bigger scale).

The main self-interest argument for foreign aid was that by investing in countries overseas you could perhaps stave off the economic plight, civil wars and disease etc. which cause economic consequences domestically down the line at possibly a greater cost.  When we pick ourselves up from all of this and work out the economic and social damage then I doubt the lobbyists for foreign aid will be at the front of the queue for attention...

It's easy for populists like Trump to denounce the WHO and make threats etc. as officials and scientists generally can't speak out and only exist at the pleasure of their political masters.  At the same time I can't help but think that "the public's had enough of experts" isn't the right way to go about meaningful reform.

thats an interesting thought - what if we applied similar thinking to our political voting system? - as we are electing a government who decides the level of taxation and public expenditure, only those that pay tax can vote!

Would suggest that people who have paid tax & retired are also allowed to vote
Over the decades they will have experienced the disaster that is Labour & that it takes the Conservatives a good few years to repair the damage
Also people married to tax payers which will help to get the numbers up

Most services and products are taxed, so in a way, anyone in the country contributes in some way.
