I have tried a few ways and not sure anymore if single approach works best - think it may ultimately depend on who you're dealing with. But just to add counter view for balance:

The flip side of asking what they want is that you will hear £500+ a lot!  I guess plenty do pay that, because many girls walk away when I say no (and seem legit confident they'll get it elsewhere). Also, some girls see an invitation to suggest price as weakness (ie. that you may be naive) and an opportunity to frame the convo at high level - ie start with 1k, so that even £500 would look like they're doing you a favour (and £200 becomes unreasonable on your part/impossible).

Clearly, if you're going to suggest an amount though, there is no point suggesting a high one - no girl is ever going to say shall we lower it! But one advantage of lowballing (even knowing they will counter with "omg that's so low - I usually get X") is that you can increase to what is actually an ok level for you while looking as if you have made a concession. Sometimes that's quite effective simply because the girl feels like she's "won" the negotiation - as opposed to trying to beat down their price, where the lower they go the more they feel they've lost ground.
