This isn't quite right: it's only about a 10/15 minute walk from the Strand to Soho, and there's no such thing as "the Charing Cross tube line"- there is the Bakerloo or the Northern from CC which would get you to Oxford Circus (not Street) or Tottenham Court Rd respectively. This would be a waste of time and effort though: by the time you've walked from the Strand to Charing Cross, gone down into the tube, waited for a train, got out at TCR, and walked down to Soho, you could easily have walked the whole way and probably done half a circuit of the walk ups!

A Google maps printout of Soho with the 'points of interest' marked in a highlighter pen is a good idea for the first timer coming with a view towards checking out all or most of what's available.
