Thought to add to a previous post about antibiotics in which I got slagged off right royally by a few who had firm, and quite relevant opinions on it, but here is a new post on the same subject.

So here they are again, the pundits on about how bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics.

What are we supposed to do - not take them for our illness now, so that we protect mankind in the future. What a wonderful, selfless thing to do! How many takers for that idea?

Just try telling that to anyone who is ill and suffering, who has a child, or maybe an elderly relative, "Sorry you can't have these, even though they will probably help your illness, we have to safeguard a future which might not happen".

The drug companies are forever researching and bringing out new products because they have to do that. It's what they always have done, and when their existing products look like they are not going to work anymore, the research folks will get their heads down and find something that does.

I think this is beyond punditry. You don't have to be a genius to work out that it's a genuine problem.

Well I got hassled to go to the GP for flu a while back. He offered me antibiotics. I asked if they would sort it and he was a bit non comittal. I decided not to bother. The problem with antibiotics is they are dispensed for trivial stuff.

As for researching new things well there aren't many new antibiotics in the pipeline, and with drugs the pipline is very long. A much better solution would be to have a healthier diet - an apple a day and all that.

It's the inappropriate use of antibiotics which is a problem. GPs feel pressured by patients to give antibiotics as that's what patients expect in this day an age. For viral illnesses and minor bacterial illnesses antibiotics will make no/little difference.

Antibiotics are significantly over-prescribed and this is causing significant problems. The healthcare professionals are not going to deprive those who need antibiotics.

Your take on this is simply misinformed and incorrect.
