Author Topic: Change in scottish Law  (Read 2506 times)

Offline seeker

Hi Lads
Was reading an artical in the evening times which mentioned some changes to Scottish laws about various things starting in April 2018.
There was something about having to prove your age to be a member of sites like Ukp and a.w  by providing credit card or passport as id  :bomb:
Does anyone have anymore information ?
I really don't fancy giving anyone my personal information  :bomb:

I hope to fuck you've got the wrong end of the stick on this one...because I won't be giving any personal information to any site.

Offline TommyMoundfrigger

AW has already updated their site to allow for this.

If you use the app you will notice a new 18 icon.

I'm with Jock D on that one though.

I won't be giving my info either.

Been delayed...:

Problem for site owners is that if they don't comply and have a way to check someone's age, they could face a fine of up to £350k

Alastair Graham, of AgeChecked, said he was surprised that there had not been more public debate around the new rule.

"It will affect 20 to 34 million people in UK," he told the BBC.

It's not just sites like AW.  Apparently, it is all adult sites, even porn ones.  This has been on the cards for a while and in the press a fair amount the past year or so. I don't think for a second they will do anything with your data, it's just a precaution along the lines of like when you have to prove your an adult to access adult content with your mobile phone provider.

Offline chinafan

How about the government piles resources into dealing with grooming gangs, rather than writing new laws to make it harder to view porn?

I think the opposite. I don’t think for a second this has anything to do with protecting children from the internet. Can you actually say with a straight face you think this Tory govt cares about the welfare of children? I just think it’s another way to link your internet usage with your actual identity. Facebook and Google want our info to sell for advertising, our govt will want it to monitor and control us.

There was that Investigatory Powers Bill in 2016 that gave all sorts of govt agencies, including shite like Food Standards agency, the right to access our internet history. There was also talk last year of a new internet completely controlled and regulated by UK govt; they will decide what can and cannot be put on there. All this would probably be a bit easier if everyone provided their ID before they went online.

VPN would solve all these issues.  It'll make you look like you're from another country where these laws don't apply.

And what’s if the sites were to get hacked and your details were used against you...

Offline andymars19

Question is do they have to retain that data once verified?   Personally, and as someone who works in web, I'd say no.  Simple:

- user verifies their age via credit card/passport
- user has flag set on their account to show verified
- identifying data deleted

If there's then any reason to doubt the verification, the flag gets unset and user has to re-verify.

We're not going to be able to do anything about the law itself, but things like the above CAN be done with enough pressure from the public and privacy groups.

Even if someone does give there private information, how do they know on the other side, the information is genuine, ie 16 year Johnny has got hold of his dads credit card, or has obtained a pre-paid credit card

So now Johnny gets verified and has access to porn, even though he is only 16 year old

So think once the age verification comes into force, its going to be met with problems, and possibly be pulled

Anyone who pays for porn must fasten up the back.

I don't think it's just for pay sites. The way I read it is you have to use a credit card to verify your over 18 even for free sites.
Kids will just hook their parents card numbers and get verified anyway.
Then you have to trust these companies ,wherever they are in the world , to keep your details private.

Quite right. Any EU-based site will have to comply with GDPR (General Data Protection) regulations which come into force in May.

Under GDPR you must be told what your personal  information is gping to be used for and agree to it. A company can only use the information for the specific things you agreed, and must delete it when it is no longer needed to do those things. So if it is collected only to authenticate your age, then it must be deleted once that has been done.

The fines for non-compliance are up to €20 million, or 4% annual global turnover – whichever is higher. It is far stricter and with higher fines than current data protection legislation.

If a firm is based outside the EU though, GDPR does not apply. I believe AW are based in Malta - so are in scope.

It applies to any site anywhere in the world if they hold data on European citizens - hence recent changes in Facebook/Google/etc being rolled out.

OTOH Teresa May trying to hold a North Korean porn site to account will be a challenge!

I've never had a pre paid credit card
Do they require you to give your accurate personal details ?
If not maybe thats the way to go ...
Get one , stick a £5 on it ,get verified on the sites you want
Then you can Spend your deep sea diver and bobs yer uncle

It wont make a jot of difference. all that will happen is that any site that is stupid enough to currently be European based will get a head office in some Russian city etc along with their servers.

There one thing which I don't think has been answered, and it has to do with multiple log in's

Now if you pay for a premium porn site membership, if you share your password and user details, that account gets locked, so when it comes to verification, will something similar be in place, and if there nothing in place, what's to stop anyone sharing there details

So one day I log in from 5 different places in Glasgow: shopping centre, work, home address, Hotel, airport, and next day log in 4-5 times in various locations in London.  I would hope my account details don't get locked, and shouldn't need to explain my self to anyone, like oh was going away on holiday
