Author Topic: Warning - your iPhone exposes your exact punt locations  (Read 13526 times)

We live in the 'Big Brother House' now nearly everywhere we go and everything we do and everything we buy is recorded on debit/credit/loyalty cards or mobile devices. If you have Sky or Virgin it knows your viewing habits and suggests similar programs.

It can be useful but it definitely has some serious drawbacks.

Simple 'Apple' will sell this information to advertisers it's priceless when you think about it.
Shocking! Can't believe people still buy them after this...

So say for example a punter has an I-Phone & one afternoon he goes for a punt. How exactly would his other half be able to trace his movements? What software would she need?
It's only stored on the phone - so she would need to follow the instructions I set out in the first post and find out everywhere you've been, a nice long list of addresses saying how many times you've visited complete with little dots on a map.

Yeh - sorry I've just told your missus how to find out but I'm banking she doesn't read UKP but she might be trawling through Mumsnet so make sure you disable this feature before she finds out. It will also take her a while to work out what's the pub and your mate's house but depends how suspicious she is.

This is just one new way she can find out - there were already lots of other ways she could do this as Smiths and Skittish pointed out Android and just about any phone - not just smartphones, you can get any SIMs tracked, people use it to make sure their kids aren't wagging off school or haven't been abducted.

What the bloody hell's the point in that feature?
It's to improve Apple maps, because they weren't as good as Google maps, so they get all the data as you trudge from the punt to the pub. They can then send you lots more location specific stuff and yes if you switch on iAds it will send you local ads too.

In fact I'm just starting to see the good potential of this - maybe with a UKP app with voting buttons to rate the punt as you leave, and some enterprising WGs tailoring their phone ads so when you leave a 1 out of 10 punt up pops her ad - 'Had a crap punt  - I'm just half a mile down the road, rated 10 out of 10 by UKP punters, £20 off with this voucher'. Hmmmm.

PS - Don't log into Google when you do your searches either, they won't tell your wife what you've been looking at but they sure as hell will sell it to everyone else!

I think that I will stick with my 6 year old Samsung Tocco.

I think it says something for my life recently that my iphone has only picked up 2 favourite locations for me since installing iOS7; home and work - and the work on has been recorded almost 3 times as often as home.

This could be a lot worse than we think. I've just checked mine and it has logged me as being in a house seven doors away from the pub I drink in. So if some poor sods wife finds this wrong info will she believe there could be a mistake??

Yes, when I checked mine it showed on a couple of occasions I was some distance from where I was!
I don't know, why does it create a log?
Or should I say, what action on the phone prompts it to make a log?

Just another ploy from people who want the public to have no privacy rights at all and are happy the younger generation seem happy to live their lives under the microscope with everyone watching (including the government).

These same people seek to preserve their own privacy at all costs but deem ours expendable as it lines their pockets. Prime example being Mark Zuckerberg who gives a stiff finger to everyone who uses Facebook's privacy but buys up all the houses around his to maintain his own!

Big Brother arrived a long time ago..

Great post, i still have a 3gs and want an upgrade. I'm single but will still keep this in mind.

Whoaaaaa! Everywhere I've been for the last couple of weeks- black on white.

That is fucked up Apple, not cool! What is the point of this feature? Is it for Alzheimer patients as I wouldn't see why anyone else would need it.
Or for checking up on your partner.

Quite right; if, like me, you're wearing a full tinfoil tuxedo to go with your hat you can use duckduckgo, firefox, and a VPN.

Except for the millions of CCTV cameras with face-tracking features and now a digital history to be retrospectively searched for decades!
We are all FUCKED!  :bomb:

One problem I can see is leaving your iPhone behind every time you punt could be suspicious.
I'd say it's better to delete the history after every punt regardless

Don't you think a totally empty history is suspicious?

Is this only iOS 7?  I'm glad I stuck with v6.

On previous ios you could download all the same information with a program, it was stored in a secret location on your phone
but when I checked it, it was not very accurate, the program placed markers on a map for you to see.

possibly, like me, you have an iphone4? Frequent locations is missing on iphone 4 for some reason.

Does anyone know if the Samsung phones have similar issues - and how to solve them. By PM if necessary.  Thanks.

Samsung phones are android in the main, so if you have a google account associated with that phone and location services is switched on and you are in any doubt about what info is being recorded sign into your google account on your laptop/device and paste in this https://maps.google.com/locationhistory

Now choose different dates on the calendar.  :scare:

That's what I was thinking, if it's on by default a tech savvy missus will wonder why you've gone to the trouble of turning it off or clearing it. I've just had to clear mine and switch it off, no choice.

I thought I knew it all about my iPhone, having gone through all the menus. This setting is hidden below the location settings for about 100 of my apps, so it's no wonder I missed it. I never scrolled down that far. I suspect that Apple have hidden this on purpose, as it is of no use to the iPhone user.

Thanks for the tip off Barry  :hi:.

I've been using Google maps (logged on) on my iPhone and I just checked that location history page. The dashboard say it's been tracking me for 7,500 miles!!! It's guessed a place of work for me, the wrong place and it even has my last two flights listed under Airplane trips.

This app is getting uninstalled!

I opened the URL listed earlier on my PC. You have to be logged in to Google to view it of course.
