Author Topic: How far will you travel before you punt?  (Read 711 times)

This thread https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=16697.0 asks how far you'll travel for a punt.  What I'm asking is how far you'll go before you punt, so that you don't run the risk of "shitting on your own midden", as we say oop north.

For me; living in one of the north's metropolitan counties, I'd never punt in the town I live in these days.  Nor the neighbouring one.  For me, it's a minimum journey of 90 minutes by public transport.  That may only be 12 - 15 miles; but it's far enough from home to punt with someone who works in an area where I don't know anybody.

Part of me wishes I had Jimmyredcab's attitude of saying to the world, "I'm a punter; get over it."  [I'm putting words into your mouth, Jimmy, but I think they're the one's you utter.]  But, given my upbringing, I know that I never will have that courage.

I had an excellent regular for a while a few streets from me, thats about the minimum i would be comfortable with, apart from that the nearer the better. :hi:

My hunting grounds are usually 30-40mins on the tube (say 5-10miles) from work.

I don't punt in my local area. Its more exciting heading into a new one.

I have punted in areas at or close to my local town a few times, I decided the risk was worth it those times, probably a bit more concious about it now.

As things stand there is at this moment little choice in said area that is of interest to me so that's probably a good thing.

I'm one of the very fortunate ones that has nothing to fear.  I'm divorced, I took early retirement two years ago so I'm not working now, and I'm not a pillar of the local community.  That being so, I have no reputation to protect - plus I don't consider what I'm doing is anything to be ashamed of.  I have two close friends and I've already told them that I've taken my first steps into the world of punting and they have no problem with it - they're jealous more than anything.  Anyone else wants to poke their noses in, let them.  I refuse to adapt my behaviour to their moral standards.  It's actually very liberating being in this position although of course I appreciate that for the majority it's a different story

It doesn't bother me, I'll punt 5 minutes down the road or 1.5 hours into London. In my previous flat I could see a parlour from my bedroom window, only went there 2 or 3 times though.

Max - 1 hour and 25 miles - not worth doing any more than that for me
