Reading Daffodils Off-Topic iPad thread has again reminded me of the drawbacks of modern phones and/or computers to punters who arent careful.

If your a punter who doesnt want your family and friends to know your a punter please be very careful not to leave the evidence behind.

That's what incognito mode in Chrome is for, not that anyone else uses my laptop.

Im the only person in my house to have access to this PC. Even then I still use Chrome Incognito mode as to not show anything in the history.

I once logged onto my Chrome account at work to get access to my email account, but what I wasn’t expecting that my whole browsing history was synced to my work chrome browser.

Offline Daffodil

Indeed.

My way of thinking is that for every one thing I know about that could cause the missus to rumble me, there are ten I don't.

Offline Steve2

It's scary out there. Stick to a punting phone and clear your history on your computer.

Offline Lambada

For the forgetful people there's an extension for Chrome that automatically activates incognito mode when you visit certain websites, just add AW, agency sites etc to the list and you're sorted.

My punting phone doesn't sync with anything that isn't dedicated to punting.

All punting browsing on my PC(s) is done through a linux installation within a virtual PC in VirtualBox - so nothing to find on the PC itself if anyone looks (not that there is anyone to look!), and if I should need to sanitise it, it's simple to delete. My ipad and iphone have hidden browsers on them as well, locked with passcodes.

That being said, I'm single and nobody else will be using my computers, if I had more to lose I'd be more paranoid!

This business about incognito modes relies on the competence of the programmers that program these applications.  To put that in perspective, the updates that are thrust down our throats virtually everytime we switch our pc's on is due to something that a programmer has overlooked or forgotten to do.  Then there's the extra worry that if the baddies manage to take control of your pc they can affect the way a browser will run, they are not worried about causing matrimonial conflict, so anything can happen.

You are better off using "a browser on a stick" such as:-

Browsing history, etc. stays on the stick and doesn't get transferred to your pc.

The thing is, I know my way around computers, so I know what is possible and how easy it is to pull things back and monitor what others are doing. And knowing that, there's no way I'd be trusting incognito mode to save me from someone with a bit of knowledge.

Don't sign in to Chrome, or your google account when browsing, then it won't sync with any other device that you sign in on.

My computer is a Chromebook, it is a lot more convenient to logon  to access other bookmarks. I’m single, so I am not worried about a wife seeing my browsing history.
I have since reconfigured the sync options to stop it syncing things like the Browsing history. The default mode is to sync everything.

Be wary of copy and paste.  Especially if you share an account with your respective other or they have access.  Always clear or over-write the machine memory,  others if they perform a paste immediately after you they will see evidence of your last copy action - learnt from experience

I use an iPad for most of my 'naughty' browsing and surfing.
I have found the free app 'Savy Soda' to be the perfect browsing tool.
Download the app, browse thru Savy Soda.....As soon as you hit the escape button, everything is wiped.....
Invaluable for me, as Wifey shares the iPad.
If using my PC, then everything goes through 'inPrivate Browsing'

Not gonna tempt fate, but so far........ :-)

Oh....I also learnt from a near miss! to overwrite any cut n paste on iPad too....would've ruined my Marraige...

I've never had a close shave in this regard, but am aware of the potential. What happened to you?

I had cut and paste a Field Report I had written and forgot to overwrite it.
My Wife went to send an email and wanted to add a photo from the film roll on iPad. Luckily, she had forgotten how to do it and asked me to help her.....then left the room to make a cup of tea. I hit paste expecting a photo to insert, and instead got the fucking Feild Report!!!!!
I was quickly able to delete and copy the photo.....I can't tell you how relieved I was.
Whilst there was nothing to directly incriminate me, it is pretty obvious that only I could have written it! And it would have led to questions I would have struggled to convincingly answer, given my paranoia about her finding me out anyway!......I am in a cold sweat thinking about it now.....and Relax!

These Apps that claim to do magical disappearing acts with your sensitive data.

Tell me, how can you be sure they are doing what it says they are doing?  Do any of them offer a guarantee where they pay your legal fees in case of divorce?  These companies will NOT hold your hand when something blows up in your face.  There is only ONE way to keep these two aspects of your life and that is to er, keep these two aspects of your life completely separate.  You have one set of equipment for your normal life, and a completely different set of equipment for your punting persona.  Full stop, end of.

Once upon a time there was a case, not so long ago, where someone was using a site such as AW.  The first time he visited it his browser asked him "do you wish to save this password in your password list?" (The choices were Yes, Not this time, Never).  So he responded Never.  He was then quite happy to go surfing there, and in lots of other areas he didn't want his wife to know about.

What he didn't realize was that his wife had found out about a different list.  A list of "passwords not saved".  Uh Oh.  The software writers of the browser did review the way the software worked after this incident, but did they offer any recompense?  Of course not, look at the terms and conditions of all these things and you will see a YMMV clause in there somewhere.

You can get a cheap blackberry and it would cost about a fiver a month pay as you go for Internet. Why anyone would use same iPad as wife is beyond me.

Logging out of the dodgy hotmail account that was hardly used on my mobile before lending said phone to Brother in Law while we (the family) were on an outing recently - would have been a good move.    I heard oh your still logged in.  I  Grabbed phone while driving.....   Think I got away with it or if he did cotton on didnt say anything.

I gave a mate an old desktop, about 3 years ago.

Before I did I ran two different programs that were supposedly guaranteed to over-write all existing and deleted files with random data... making data recovery impossible.

A week later he told me he had accessed about 7 or 8 documents that were left on machine. Couldn't believe it... went round to check... he was right.

There was nothing incriminating. But never again.... ever since I physically take old computers to pieces and smash hard discs to bits with a hammer. No doubt somebody could still recover data.... but they would need to work hard.

I am not a gadget type person, yet have about half a dozen old handsets lying around.  Even on PAYG it is possible to get an upgrade.  All you say is that the battery life was no good and the shop offered a handset that was cheaper than a new battery.

I would also like to point out a pretty serious issue with people using Google Chrome for storing passwords and logins.....

Open Google Chrome, click on settings, click on show advanced settings, go down to “Passwords and Forms”, click on “manage saved passwords” and there are all your URL’s and user names to login in …. – ah, but the password is encrypted, just a row of dots,  err, no just click on any of the urls and click show password……………… and there is your password for all to see.  It also shows a list of the URL's that you have visited but told it not to save the passwords for!

Its not a good idea to leave your computer logged in and unattended -  someone could have it away with all our passwords in a couple of minutes whilst you have nipped to the toilet/shop/etc...

Seems he has a liking for large breasted, mature ladies. Nice. Never mind, he can pursue that to his hearts content soon. Dont think you are all so clever, what goes around, comes around. Christ - didn't know about that. What a ridiculous thing that is. Even when you delete the history it keeps all those website listed. Does the desktop version of Safari do the same? Better check.

Simple solution to counter this. Open Google Chrome, click on History (or press Ctrl+H), click the "Clear browsing data..." button, check the "Clear browsing/download history" + "Clear saved Autofill form data" + "Empty the cache" boxes and click on the "Clear browsing data" button below. Do this regularly, and you're indeed clever because what goes around remains unknown.

I and my wife use the iPad all the time.
My Solution?     Download an app called Savy Soda.  (It's an 'in Private' browsing app and its free)
I hide the Savy Soda desktop icon in somewhere innocent like a 'Golf Courses' folder.

Do ALL your naughty browsing by signing into Savy Soda first....
I include in this browsing : UKP, AW, email, Twitter.....oh, and any Porn, anything you don't want a trace of.

As soon as you escape (press the button to escape), EVERYTHING goes and all history is lost.
I can literally be browsing AW one second, escape, and be looking at something innocent on Safari the next....

Now, it may well be that by searching the machine at an in depth IT level you can find stuff, but for basic secrecy, it is good as my wife is not an IT professional and I have never been able to find any trace of where I have been. Maybe an IT whizz on here can tell me I am wrong?

It (so far...fingers crossed) works for me.......my near miss came recently (see earlier post) when I failed to overwrite a dodgy cut and paste I had done. Schoolboy error and carelessness on my part.

Has anyone else noticed what type of Google Ads they're being shown when visiting non punting websites? I'm getting all sorts of dating ads showing :(

I normally type punting URL's into the browser (Incognito mode) directly, but I have on the odd occasion used Google to access Adultwork. The Google ad targeting system sees that I was previously looking for a women, so shows me the closest ad they have, dating sites and divorce links! Yet another giveaway.

The same things happens when I'm searching for xmas gifts, fucking Google starts showing ads for what you've been looking for, ruining the surprise if anyone's looking over your shoulder.

Youtube is very bad for this effect - happens real fast but the Google ad-engine thing doesn't have a long memory it seems.  If you get Google up and hammer in about five good searches ( I use 'cheap flights europe' 'travel insurance france' 'gift ideas wife birthday' that sort of thing) it forgets the bad stuff.

Test it in Youtube before you log off for the day :)

Google ads are targeted. There was a hilarious moment on a TV debate recently with abolitionists. One was ranting about the amount of hard-core nasty porn she was presented with when searching for something innocuous like 'embroidery'. Someone pointed out that since she does 'research' in that area her search terms and sites visited will have been saved and she is automatically targeted with more of the same. Whether she's looking for it at that moment or not.

There's similar apps for Android (no point in mentioning their names for our Mumsnet fan base but they're easy enough to find. ) Some will disguise themselves as an innocent program that you have to use in a specific way to get your hidden screen and photos and things.

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i find a good tool for privacy is a linux usb stick. whole new operating system on a usb leaving no traces on your laptop/desktop. ideal for my work laptop at night time and not just for scud sites. if you want you can add 'persistence' to install apps and remember settings between uses, if not you'll have a brand new system every time. generally all you need to do once you've sorted the stick or CD is press F2 when your computer starts.guide here;

Lots of good technology related advice here, but something far simpler could have been cause of my downfall.  I was just about to leave a WG's apartment when I noticed the Postman walking up the path, and realised the Postman was also my Postman.  That happened a couple of months ago, so I can only assume that he didn't see/recognise me.
