You dont have to have a second phone, just another tiny Sim card.

[quote For the forgetful people there's an extension for Chrome that automatically activates incognito mode when you visit certain websites, just add AW, agency sites etc to the list and you're sorted.

I gave a mate an old desktop, about 3 years ago.

Before I did I ran two different programs that were supposedly guaranteed to over-write all existing and deleted files with random data... making data recovery impossible.

A week later he told me he had accessed about 7 or 8 documents that were left on machine. Couldn't believe it... went round to check... he was right.

There was nothing incriminating. But never again.... ever since I physically take old computers to pieces and smash hard discs to bits with a hammer. No doubt somebody could still recover data.... but they would need to work hard.

I am not a gadget type person, yet have about half a dozen old handsets lying around.  Even on PAYG it is possible to get an upgrade.  All you say is that the battery life was no good and the shop offered a handset that was cheaper than a new battery.

another thing is gmail / google+ received a email earlier & it had a pic of the guy & his family as he obviously uses google+

I would also like to point out a pretty serious issue with people using Google Chrome for storing passwords and logins.....

Open Google Chrome, click on settings, click on show advanced settings, go down to “Passwords and Forms”, click on “manage saved passwords” and there are all your URL’s and user names to login in …. – ah, but the password is encrypted, just a row of dots,  err, no just click on any of the urls and click show password……………… and there is your password for all to see.  It also shows a list of the URL's that you have visited but told it not to save the passwords for!

Its not a good idea to leave your computer logged in and unattended -  someone could have it away with all our passwords in a couple of minutes whilst you have nipped to the toilet/shop/etc...

Mmmm, thanks for that, us savvy wives can now discover how to rumble our oh so clever husbands.  Just rumbled mine, he left his dodgy email on his mobile browser  open for all the world to see. Seems he has a liking for large breasted, mature ladies. Nice. Never mind, he can pursue that to his hearts content soon. Dont think you are all so clever, what goes around, comes around. Best of luck to you all.

that was close, i just rang home to see if that was my wife!  :bomb:

i did have an experience with the ipad recently as there is a section in settings; safari; Advanced, that shows every web page you have visited but managed to bullshit my way out of it as my sons use the ipad as well. It’s also on the iphone so I’m careful now but the problem i find is when im thinking of pussy my mind doesn’t concentrate properly and mistakes can happen.

Christ - didn't know about that. What a ridiculous thing that is. Even when you delete the history it keeps all those website listed. Does the desktop version of Safari do the same? Better check.
Banning reason: Trolling another member because he posted a negative about his favourite prossie. Also known as EdiTed on other sites.

Thanks for that!
Why is it so difficult to erase these things! Always a 50 step process!

Simple solution to counter this. Open Google Chrome, click on History (or press Ctrl+H), click the "Clear browsing data..." button, check the "Clear browsing/download history" + "Clear saved Autofill form data" + "Empty the cache" boxes and click on the "Clear browsing data" button below. Do this regularly, and you're indeed clever because what goes around remains unknown.

I and my wife use the iPad all the time.
My Solution?     Download an app called Savy Soda.  (It's an 'in Private' browsing app and its free)
I hide the Savy Soda desktop icon in somewhere innocent like a 'Golf Courses' folder.

Do ALL your naughty browsing by signing into Savy Soda first....
I include in this browsing : UKP, AW, email, Twitter.....oh, and any Porn, anything you don't want a trace of.

As soon as you escape (press the button to escape), EVERYTHING goes and all history is lost.
I can literally be browsing AW one second, escape, and be looking at something innocent on Safari the next....

Now, it may well be that by searching the machine at an in depth IT level you can find stuff, but for basic secrecy, it is good as my wife is not an IT professional and I have never been able to find any trace of where I have been. Maybe an IT whizz on here can tell me I am wrong?

It (so far...fingers crossed) works for me.......my near miss came recently (see earlier post) when I failed to overwrite a dodgy cut and paste I had done. Schoolboy error and carelessness on my part.

I could never take the risk my wife has her own iPad and I have my own gadgets that only I really use. Plus I separate my browsers so no cross contamination can ever happen. In fact I tell my missus that one browser is my porn browser.

Has anyone else noticed what type of Google Ads they're being shown when visiting non punting websites? I'm getting all sorts of dating ads showing :(

I normally type punting URL's into the browser (Incognito mode) directly, but I have on the odd occasion used Google to access Adultwork. The Google ad targeting system sees that I was previously looking for a women, so shows me the closest ad they have, dating sites and divorce links! Yet another giveaway.

The same things happens when I'm searching for xmas gifts, fucking Google starts showing ads for what you've been looking for, ruining the surprise if anyone's looking over your shoulder.

Youtube is very bad for this effect - happens real fast but the Google ad-engine thing doesn't have a long memory it seems.  If you get Google up and hammer in about five good searches ( I use 'cheap flights europe' 'travel insurance france' 'gift ideas wife birthday' that sort of thing) it forgets the bad stuff.

Test it in Youtube before you log off for the day :)

It's easy for single people to forget just how little privacy and self-determination married folk can become accustomed to.

Google ads are targeted. There was a hilarious moment on a TV debate recently with abolitionists. One was ranting about the amount of hard-core nasty porn she was presented with when searching for something innocuous like 'embroidery'. Someone pointed out that since she does 'research' in that area her search terms and sites visited will have been saved and she is automatically targeted with more of the same. Whether she's looking for it at that moment or not.

There's similar apps for Android (no point in mentioning their names for our Mumsnet fan base but they're easy enough to find. ) Some will disguise themselves as an innocent program that you have to use in a specific way to get your hidden screen and photos and things.

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i find a good tool for privacy is a linux usb stick. whole new operating system on a usb leaving no traces on your laptop/desktop. ideal for my work laptop at night time and not just for scud sites. if you want you can add 'persistence' to install apps and remember settings between uses, if not you'll have a brand new system every time. generally all you need to do once you've sorted the stick or CD is press F2 when your computer starts.guide here;

Buy her one, of better still get her to buy her own!

My browsing is nicely hidden! Don't think she will find it even if she knew the code to view

ipad isn't locked either as to not raise any suspicions

I keep a second phone in my desk at work switched off. Only take it punting.

Lots of good technology related advice here, but something far simpler could have been cause of my downfall.  I was just about to leave a WG's apartment when I noticed the Postman walking up the path, and realised the Postman was also my Postman.  That happened a couple of months ago, so I can only assume that he didn't see/recognise me.
