It can also happen when you take oral contraceptives back to back without the break in between. You can get so called breakthrough bleeding which will be brown rather than red, it happens when you forget to take the pill on time ( has to be taken similar time every day else you can get brown discharge  ) This way you are constantly suppressing your period.
