The wide range of restrictions brought in 2017 along with the "helper" usergroup to index reviews / move threads / etc. has reduced my workload and made UKP less of a headache to moderate, so no, I won't be undoing that.

To the previous few ‘anti-VPNners’ –

The only reason I came here to ask is down to admin having already said on page 1 that he's willing to make 'exemptions per member.' So  obviously I'm not asking for ‘special treatment’ or anything above and beyond the norm. My post wasn’t really meant to generate discussion or criticize the set-up as such, maybe I should’ve made that clearer, but its kinda hard spending time on your posts in an internet cafe.

Unlike one person was insinuating, no I don't want to hide my I.P. because of some previous ban, this is my first time here for crying out loud! If i wanted to troll UKP do you really think I'd bother logging in with my username then draw attention to myself by requesting a VPN expetion? I'm sure there are far more discrete ways to troll!

I appreciate the vast majority of members may be happy to post from your home IPs, but don’t have a go at the minority who, for genuine reasons, prefer to use VPNs

Most returning trolls are idiots though, others are devious and pretend to be new just like you.

anyway have fun in the cafe, avoiding admin seeing your home IP.

Making special exceptions is a gift from Admin not a right. You’re not an established member, have no reviews and hardly any posts. So chill out and contribute more! It’s a privately owned forum, paid for and run by Admin, not a public service and not some automated thing where you clock up points.

Offline scutty brown

I suspect "exemptions per member" should be better read as "special case exemptions per member are possible in exceptional circumstances".
I'm not Admin, so can't speak for him. But so far I've seen little that qualifies you, a new member, as a special case. Just about everyone else here is making do without a VPN, why should you be different?
I should point out that the VPN ban is just one of the security methods Admin uses to try to keep the forum free of spammers and other ne'er-do-wells. Its there for a reason, and we accept it. Why are you a special case?

dodgy website registered to a dissolved company...........

You mean spending his pocket money in Internet cafés to advertise it?   :unknown: :sarcastic:  Poor misguided wee boy. But the avatar name was a nice touch so he can call us racist when he gets banned. Amazing what they learn in school today.  :dash:

should we run a sweepstake on where he's from?

Oldham, Rochdale, Burnley, Blackburn or Bury?

On this site (UKP) I can make exemption per-member, but I can't on UKE or PuntingWiki because I haven't added that feature and have no time to do so.

Ive not used it on UKE, for reasons given, but must admit, it would be highly desirable feature to make use of more widely.

Why?

Offline hantshagger

kind of agree with this, (below quote) ,  hopefully explains the why bit   - however I realise it may be a 'wish list too far' at present.

I must admit Id also like to access this website using a VPN service Ive paid for.    As I tend to flit between this site (where I need to turn it off) and other websites where its not a problem, invariably I end up leaving it switched off....... too much of a hassle to switch it on and off....

I can understand why VPNs aren't allowed as it helps Admin to keep track of the troublemakers who've been banned previously trying to sign up again.

Im in agreement with the OP though... Id prefer not have people knowing I visit here, and when you look at the list of government agencies now authorised to access your internet records without a warrant, its a bit of an eye opener.....

But its Admin's site, and his rules.

Offline Marmalade

Seeing the amount of work Admin puts into the site and the need to be able to keep it clean and still do so without spending time on that instead of improvements I can’t say I’d disagree with his policy. Allowing VPN doesn’t actually improve UKP — it makes it more convenient for certain people and a potential headache for Admin. Whereas prossie search facilities, linking of reviews and the report system are features that actually improve the site. (They seem fine better spent to me.)

Some VPNs are a hassle to switch on and off: some are nothing more than a click on a menu bar.

The privacy issue is very user-dependent, as Snowden has pointed out. The very fact that you have a vpn on your computer might be a red flag to a snoopy wife. It’d be a long thread to cover all different circumstances (and I think we’ve maybe established that the original complainer was just a wanker) but although I respect the concern of genuine punters my personal feeling is that it would really be, as you say, ‘a request too far’.

Offline scutty brown

the ironic thing is that if all you're trying to do is hide your browsing from the wife/mother, then an effective method has already been mentioned - I gave the idiot a clue in an earlier post.
However, even if you used a fake credit card to pay for the service you would still be traceable by the authorities

Well, hiding my IP I just see as an extension of having a punting phone. Yes, call me super-paranoid, but everyone has their own reasons, everything doesn't have to be about trolling. Like I said I've never heard of a troll drawing attention to himself and his username by coming on here specifically asking for a VPN exemption! No doubt there are some people out there that might think having a punting phone is super paranoid. Doesn't give them a right to have a go at anyone who keeps one! Each to their own, right?

Privately, I always use Opera for whatever I'm doing, its easier in terms of discretion as well - if friends and family ever need to have access to my laptop once in a while, like the majority of folks they head straight to Google Chrome. My Opera browser is hidden - its private, for myself.

Its not like I'm especially wanting to use a VPN for UKP. Its second nature for me. I use Opera for everything and that won't change. So what would qualify as a "good reason" for wanting an exemption? I don't know. I could tell you that I'm travelling around the world a lot so I have no choice but to use it, and who knows, that might get me an exemption?  But how would admin know that I'm not a troll using that as a convenient excuse? How would he know that if, one day I'm posting from Germany, and the next from Holland, I'm not sat at my desk here in Mile End having a chicken curry while working on my next troll post...? You see where this is leading...

Not using a VPN is no big deal, it just means I can only respond on threads maybe once a week or even less. Well, whenever I get time to pop in to my local internet cafe. And it also means having rush through posts which might contain lots of errors and not having the pleasure of 'loitering' on the site - checking out different posts, reading PMs, and stuff like that. Of course UKP aint a porno site, but it does contain its fair share of titties at the top. And some cafe owners can be asshats!

What Linux distro did you install on your laptop?

Don't think he did.
Opera is available for Windows, and it contains what they describe as a "built in VPN", in reality its actually an extension of Opera's browser server-side rendering and caching technology, better described as IP obfuscation rather than an VPN. Doesn't really offer any degree of protection as any plugin will dial home directly, not via the Opera server cache.
FWIW every time I've tried using it on UKP its been detected and blocked - Admin must have a list of the Opera proxy addresses

Offline Marmalade

I think Admin has already answered; so PervertPakistani is whining in the wind. But generally anyway, when you join a forum or newsgroup, you have already adapted to the requirements of that forum. It’s not rocket science and you can’t expect a forum suddenly to adapt to you rather than the other way round. And to PervertPakistani: especially when there are tens of thousands of members, many actively contributing to the purpose of the site, and when you are one person and that person is contributing sweet fuck all. Tbh you’ve got a bloody cheek!

Poor guy - he thinks he is "invisible" by Opera - while Windows 10 ruins everything  :D

Some great points above..... whilst I don't see it that often, there are enough that want ukp to alter to suit them.

If they can't alter to suit ukp then I'd suggest here isn't a place to be

I meant Windows 10 is like Facebook - it collects datas about its users (even when you switch off everything in Privacy in Settings). That's why German government is still using Windows 7 for example. But soon they will move to "Bundesclient" (which is a special and safe (?) version of Windows 10).

And if you work on Intel-based PC you face another threat - Intel Management Engine (ME) - highly skilled hackers (and NSA/FBI/CIA without doubts) will be able to hack your computer:

you had me worried about Win10 somehow bypassing VPNs
