Before I started punting, I was terribly naive. I was on holiday in Sydney in '01; & at about 7.30 a.m one morning, was going between the hotel I was staying in [in King Cross] and another, where I was going to board a coach for a day trip. As I was walking, I heard the call 'D'you wanna lady?' At 7.30 a.m!!
This was three years before my first punt [Mrs R L was still alive in those days, but obviously not with me]; and, as a disabled bloke with low self-esteem, never imagined the question was aimed at me; so I kept walking. Half a minute later, I heard, 'I SAID, "D'YOU WANNA LADY?" ' The only reply I could think of at that time of the day to call back over my shoulder was, "Give over; I've not digested my breakfast yet!"
What an opportunity I missed, eh?
