Triangulation might have been technically difficult 20 years ago - but it isn't now - even an iPhone can do it, more or less instantaneously. The same data the iPhone uses is available to the phone companies - they use it to manage their networks. How much detail they keep I don't know, but I recall reading posts by WGs who were unhappy that somehow the phone company they have their civvie phone with also knew about their "secret" work phone as well.

I cant see how they knew about the work phone unless they had registered the sim card or the phone at some point  it or used the same credit card /debit card to top up or buy it

I have a phone that I paid cash for and top up with cash,  its never been registered  i've  never signed anything for it when i bought it and neither has the sim card that i use for it

Thank the lucky stars that the uk is still pretty free and easy with regards to privacy and that you can buy a sim card for £1 or so and you don't have to register it and can punt in relative privacy

In a lot of countries such as Dubai the rest of the UAE Australia & Norway you need to show your passport to get a sim card.

In fact in Norway  you can put someone number into the Norwegian  equivalent of 118 -118 and you get there name date of birth address and even where they work  If you pay extra to the subscription you can find out how much they earn i believe as well but I'm not that nosy

I loved the times that i toured Norway -  clients never give you a bogus name and time waster were very very rare  and its very very safe to work

Tbh I think it's pretty obvious - they were colocated through triangulation.

Some good info on this thread.

But come on ffs is it not all down to basic common sense?

Some of the under cover stuff some people exercise on here makes me howl, we are talking about covering our tracks when paying for sex.
Easy, don't fuckin tell anyone. GOLDEN RULE!

Yes i agree but in order for them to know who the phone /sim belonged to in the first place they ( the escort)  would have had to of either registered the phone  ime number / the sim card when they got it so that they could top up by credit card or debit card or paid for it by credit card at some point

If you buy a phone from a car boot sale and use it no one is going to know who it belongs to unless you register the ime number /phone or sim card

If, for example, the phones are in the same physical location and move around together only one of them may have to be registered to figure out the other one is being used by the same person.

Ha - ha You wouldn't say that if you nipped over to mumsnet and had a look in the relationships section loads and  loads of guys get caught using adultwork, auto-censored, searching for escorts and plenty of women on there telling them how to do various things to get evidence and stuff of them punting /cheating

One guy was on plenty of fish and had one of his wedding day pictures on it which he had photo shopped  ( he said he was single and that he was the best man in the picture and not the groom)

The majority of them were discovered through by the stuff left on there  smartphones, iPads, and  home computers

Sorry if this sounds moralistic and simplistic; but if you're in a relationship and don't punt, then you can't be caught out.

But if the history of the phone includes being used for drug-dealing then one can land up in an even dodgier predicament.

Sorry K that's beyond paranoia.
Do you really think a drug-dealer would be selling 10 pound phones on ebay?  I think not.

Like i said Paris, common sense.  The day i log on to mumsnet is the day i hang myself with my original 1998 (fat plug) Nokia charger.    :unknown:

best sort of phone to get is one that is around 10 years old with no internet gps stuff -  nokias are probably the best
very basic very easy to use and no way real way  to track you via gps /internet

Something like this  for a fiver is brilliant   totally basic and totally uncool so no worries of being robbed  .

Hi, OP here. Some great advice on here. Some bit technical for me - triangulation etc. In the end I thought the above was the best advice. Got a cheap nokia and £1 sim, topped it up and ready to rumble. No iPhones syncing shit to worry about.  ;)

Fair do's Sunny, at least you found a solution your comfy with.

I found a £10 phone in carphone warehouse Alcatel that will take two SIM cards and I can throw away anytime I want.

Why the need for a two sim phone?  it baffles me.

Plus i can hardly see a prossie sporting a dual sim alacatel ffs.  mental.

  You don't even  have to log in to read the posts -   some are quite scary and hard on advice.  LTB ( Leave The Bastard ) is often quite routinely mentioned simply because  the wife has found  adultwork /auto-censored on the iPad /phone

Well he might be if  business is a bit slow - recession and stuff

I wonder how many Mumsnet contributors are divorce lawyers.

Appreciate this is an oldish thread but just wanted to add a heads up regarding smartphones and tablets  I have religiously used a 2nd phone cleared out history etc on phones and lap top. I recently bought a tablet and logged in to my email all very standard stuff.left tablet at home and was off for a week working away. Came back yesterday from working away turned on tablet and searched google maps for work related call out. Absolutely shit myself when up comes AW searches, screenshots of AW profiles id visited and deleted off my phone and loads of work photos! Of course I havent set up passwords or fuckall on the tablet cos I hadnt intended to use it for anything iffy. Anyway just spent an hour reading up on how to stop syncing, deleting history stored 'in the cloud!' And setting up passwords. I wouldnt mind but I felt secure as I have a history eraser app on phone that kills everything with 2 clicks, obviously doesnt work in the cloud then!

I hope other punters in a similar situation take note. I use a very old mobile for punting, i dont need the net on it, and that is more than good enough for my punting.

Ditto.... Good old Nokia 3120. PIN Protected as well. Am thinking of upgrading it to ..... Nokia E71, but no email synchronisation or web access required, as it is not necessary and costs extra on a PAYG phone.

There will come a time when an old phone draws attention to you, rather than help preserve your anonymity...

(Try putting that one up your arse, if the aerial becomes loosened you will be auditioning for the nearest girl's choir).

I cloud and google circle are both VERY HIGH RISK. My old Nokia is a perfect punting phone
