Vice squad seizes £500k paintings by Jack Vettriano from former brothel boss after police crackdown.

JACK Vettriano paintings worth £500,000 were seized from a former brothel boss in a police crackdown on vice.

They were taken by detectives who smashed into the home of Ian Haig, 70, whose brother Charles, 73, runs a sex-for-sale sauna in Edinburgh.

Vettriano, 61, regularly visited Scorpio sauna near Easter Road in the 1990s and painted vice girls working there.

That was published about three weeks ago;  haven't been able to find any more recent info.  Scorpio still appears to be open though.

I think they only tried to shut Newtown, and it's not connected with Haig as far as I know. Newtown is waiting for it's licence to come up again for renewal again soon and is open meanwhile. There's some UKP threads on it.

Edinburgh brothels back in the news

I don't have particular sympathy for the pair, but the report sounds a bit of a Judge Judy job (Grady has a controversial reputation for being harsh). The worst they could say was that the women were hard up when they took the job of their own free will and that the bosses got rich and probably didn't pay enough tax. Sounds a bit like a job at Tesco's once you remove the emotional prejudice.

Yeah - she as a bee in her bonnet and a screw loose in her nut job head - she's called Rhoda Grant!

From her Wikipedia entry: "She holds a degree in social sciences from the Open University."  I really don't think I need to say anything more, do I ?

Today we have this...

Herald: Pensioner, 70, is one of five charged with brothel-keeping after capital raid

Quote

AN Edinburgh pensioner is among five people to have been charged with alleged brothel-keeping following a police investigation.

Ian Haig, 70, is facing court action after a raid on saunas that involved 150 police personnel.

In a separate development, Police Scotland has applied for the suspension of six sauna licences in the capital, including Scorpio Leisure, which is run by Haig's elder brother, Charles.

Scotsman:  Police move to close six Edinburgh saunas

Quote
ALMOST half of Edinburgh’s saunas could be ordered to close after police referred six premises to licensing bosses over sex-for-sale allegations.

Councillors will next week consider a dossier of evidence gathered by police in support of their request for the premises to have their licences suspended.

It follows two waves of raids on saunas in the Capital last month.

Seven individuals linked to the saunas have been arrested and charged in connection with brothel keeping and living off immoral earnings.

Edinburgh currently has 13 licensed saunas.

Those charged are understood to include Ian Haig of Scorpio Leisure in Albion Road; Jayne Donoghue of The New Gentle Touch, Argyle Place; Kelly Potter of Paradise Sauna, Roseburn Terrace; and Ivan Cameron of the New Town Sauna in Hart Street.

Looks like the licensing committee's going to consider this on Wednesday.  Who's going to win, the police or the council?  Exactly why are the police concerning themselves with this?  Is it because they really think there's serious crime going on, or is it based on the moral views of the people in charge?

I don't think it's either. The new head of Scottish Police seems intent on his own political advancement even at the expense of the human misery and disruption to the community that will result if his failed Glaswegian policies win over Edinburgh Council's determination to use common sense. Edinburgh communities, academia, social services, data on the ground, the media (mostly) and the public are all 99% against him but he doesn't care. He wants to make his scummy little point. The guy did well in Brighton seemingly and has some former decorations that have completely gone to his head. Edinburgh police involved in the raids have been polite and almost apologetic, whereas the Glasgow lot drafted in have demonstrated typical Glaswegian arrogance and nastiness that they are wont to show in such matters. Sod the women - label them as vulnerable (and they are: to police harassment!!) Soon they'll be doing business in dark alleys likeGlasgow, robbing or getting robbed, raped but too fearful to report it (hopefully not, but likely as they will have no police protection), or we'll see the horrific prossie-murder headlines of Glasgow and Bradford.

Whatever one's views on prostitution, Edinburgh more than any city in the UK, has been effective in safeguarding women's health, reducing real crime (such as robbery, assault, grooming, forced trafficking ), reducing annoyance to the public, and controlling STDs. Now one stuck up little head of police wants to undo all that by trying to enforce the letter of the law over people's welfare.

The sound bites about respecting Edinburgh's police traditions are hypocritical as he is effectively riding roughshod over them and everybody knows it.

Where do the Newspapers get all this detailed information? I presume it’s from the Police.

If they shut half of the saunas down then that would be a good compromise where everyone can claim a victory.

What will be *very* suspicious is if they shut down ones that are properly and responsibly managed and leave the ones run by people known to be powerful, dodgy characters that can afford bribes and expensive lawyers. Not naming names, but plenty of people know which is which.

As you say, you're not naming names, but I reckon I can guess which are more likely to be the "dodgier" ones.

If they shut half of them down then I suspect that that would just prove that the saunas are dens of iniquity; the police would feel vindicated, so then they'd go after the rest.

They had 150 police on that last raid. They need something to show for it.
They are not going to do a raid of that size again.
Only time will tell. It's amazing that Edinburgh has got away with having so many brothels for so long.

Six Edinburgh saunas shut down

SIX Edinburgh saunas have been ordered to shut their doors after having their licences suspended by the city council.

Councillors agreed to the move following an application by Police Scotland.

Police are said to have submitted a dossier of evidence to today’s hearing which they claimed showed evidence the premises had breached the terms of their licences.

The meeting was held in private and the city council refused to name the saunas involved or give any reason for the decision to suspend their licences.

Seven people linked to the city’s saunas have already been charged in relation to sex for sale claims.

Oh well.  I wonder how long it'll be until they go after the rest?

I presume it will be when their licences come up for renewal and the police object.
It looks like the end for the Edinburgh brothels.

All the licenses were up for renewal today, including Newtown. It's still open this evening. I would imagine Scorpio is a logical one to get the chop as they were always getting into trouble, and a grotty place anyway. And I wouldn't miss anything on Lothian Road or Rose St Lanes disappearing. Newtown and London St are well-run and should really stay open.

I think some of the sauna owner were getting a bit too cocky and thought they could do anything they wanted.
May not be a bad thing to get rid of the badly run one and give the rest a kick up the backside.

"Scorpio Leisure; The New Gentle Touch; Paradise Sauna; New Town Sauna; Blair Street Sauna; and Dundas Street Sauna" according to 'sources' - with 28 days to appeal.

http://www.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-saunas-to-close-with-sex-trade-crack-down-1-3013314 (a more sympathetic and sane report than the Herald's usual prossie-bashing stance).

There seems little rhyme or reason to the list, apart from Scorpio, which is no stranger to minor law-breaking. I'm pleased LSS has survived. The Gentle Touch - Abacus - Paradise trio are just amateurish but harmless. BSS is popular with punters but plenty of girls complain about it. Several bastards that run shit operations but with supposedly heavy clout and connections have been let off, whereas Newtown, a well-run small sauna, has been unfairly targeted it seems. I heard that some of the 'charges' relate to things like 'inadequate ventilation.'

Sad to see Blair Street closing but at least LSS has survived for now.
I think the reason is the criminal records or criminal connections of the owners.
Remember the Haig guy at Scorpio was once stabbed outside the sauna.

Here's another report in with a few more details ...

http://m.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-saunas-ordered-to-close-1-3013047

SIX city saunas have been ordered to shut down – signalling what could possibly be an end to the city’s soft stance on the sex industry.

Council bosses suspended their licences following a string of police raids. The saunas – which represent nearly half of the Capital’s 13 premises – will be forced to close their doors next month. The move represents a radical shift from the typically pragmatic approach to prostitution which allowed saunas to operate to keep sex workers safer and off the streets. It is understood that the saunas being closed are Paradise in Roseburn Terrace, The New Gentle Touch in Argyle Place, the Dundas Street Sauna, Scorpio Leisure in Albion Road, the Blair Street Sauna, and the New Town Sauna in Hart Street. The decision follows two waves of raids on saunas last month which saw seven individuals charged in connection with brothel keeping and living off immoral earnings. But a senior council source said that the licences were suspended due to licensing infractions, not the criminal charges. The source said: “The licence holders have a responsibility to know what’s going on in their sauna, just like in any licenced premises. Their argument was that they just rented out space to the women and had no idea what happened behind close doors.“ That’s a licensing violation and that, not criminal allegations, was the reason for the suspensions.”

Sauna bosses have been given 28 days to appeal against the decision, which was made at a private council meeting yesterday afternoon. If upheld, the suspensions are set to run until each sauna’s licence expires, allowing the owners to apply again to open.Councillors will take into account any changes to the business before deciding upon a renewal, but the circumstances of the suspension will continue to count against them.Independent Lothian MSP Margo MacDonald said: “I hope that the council will take time to decide whether the local policy which has worked for years in Edinburgh – one of containment and management – rather than the Glasgow approach of ‘zero tolerance’ should be continued.”

Peter Donoghue, 69, a former sauna operator who represented the Paradise, Dundas Street and New Gentle Touch saunas at the meeting, said: “It was a lot of nonsense. Some girls have worked at the saunas for ten or 12 years. They’ll simply work for escort agencies instead. We’re going to appeal, but I don’t believe we have a chance.” Mr Donoghue, who first opened a city sauna 35 years ago, added: “Police Scotland have been allowed to take over the city. The other saunas will have to close now.”A representative from Scorpio Leisure said: “We’re running today and we’ll be running in the future.” The Blair Street Sauna did not want to comment while no-one at the New Town Sauna was available to respond.Councillor Gavin Barrie, convener of the regulatory committee, said: “As with all licence suspensions, there is a right to appeal within 28 days to have the decision overturned.”A Police Scotland spokesman said: “[We] submitted reports to the licensing board, and on the strength of these reports, six venues have had their public entertainment licences suspended, with the suspensions to come into effect 28 days from July 24.”

just thought i'd stick my neb in here, and ask, why all the hate for the Haig?

scorpio is a fair and nice place to work when cops aren't swarming all over it - the stories i have heard about newtown and blair st, however, kind of justify the closure.  just to be clear - the things i've heard come second-hand (re:newtown & b st) but such things would never happen at scorpio, where, if you need it, Messrs Haig would bend over backwards to help you.

can't agree more that the reason for these raids are the glasgow boys flexing their muscles - hopefully now that Mr Salmond has put wee Rhoda back in her box we can get back to the status quo.

i find it laughable that the £500 000 worth of goods they bigged up as being 'seized' was actually someones private property, a gift from a friend - scraping the bottom of the barrel much?
