I thought I'd start this thread on accessing and using GUM clinics in the East midlands to help demystify the process, share, pitfalls, how long you need to take out of a busy day etc, is it totally confidential, will your GP practice find out etc etc. For those unaware: A sexual health or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic specialises in sexual health, and can provide tests and treatment for many STIs.

Hopefully we'll get a thread like on the London Board (https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=58732.175) which gave me the idea.

There's already a useful a useful Notts thread here: https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=53163, but thought it better to aim for an EM wide - not least because many of us might like not to go to our local!

So please use this thread to discuss and ask questions about STI testing, as I shall do shortly.

I'm hoping the above thread will become a bit of a resource so kept my specific question for here. So, I've not been tested for over two years, and that followed a condom split. Latterly (all down to UKP), I've had miles more OWO recently, and do a lot of Rim and DFK. I've also punted abroad for the first time in years. Risks, I know are minimal, but I figured, prompted by the London thread, it's time for a check up.

Does anyone know if its OK to go in another town; last time I went local, and there was a huge waiting room full of people, not just for the GUM clinic  :scare:. I sat there thinking any minute they're going to shout my name out and say the sexual health clinic is ready to see you now! Seems in London you can go with a fake name, use your punting phone, give a false address etc; Notts you can too.

Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts on this re clinics they know.

Going to a different town isn't an issue. Just tell them that you work in that town/city and they don't bat an eyelid.

I get tested every 3 months and have done since I became active again.

All info is totally confidential and they will NOT contact your doctor unless you ask them to.

I tell them my real name, my real date of birth and I give them my real home address. I do though use my punting phone for texts etc that they send. So much easier than lying through my teeth to them as it's too much like hard work to remember everything.

Results are sent out by text unless you ask otherwise.

I have used....

Chesterfield

External Link/Members Only

Sheffield

External Link/Members Only

Rotherham

External Link/Members Only

I have also used Wakefield which I think is shite !!!!

By far and above my favorite is the walk-in in Sheffield. It's near the Crucible Theater with a large NCP just opposite to park in. It's my favorite as you DO NOT need an appointment. It's fucking hilarious watching all the pro$$ies walk in. Saw a regular in there last time I was there so we had a nice chat and afterwards I punted her.

If I have time to make an appointment I use either Chesterfield or Rotherham.

I was actually in Rotherham this week for my 3 monthly check up. Took longer in the waiting room than what the test took. I was in and out in 20 minutes which was ideal as I booked for 0900 and did it on the way to a client appointment for work. Results should be texted to me within the week.

I know Sheffield and Rotherham aren't in the EM but they are just over the border.

they take your number and address for test results, but they don't link it to your GP unless you want them to.

I used the GUM clinic at Newark hospital recently and recommend it highly. Bookings are made via a central appointments line at Field Mill hospital, Mansfield (Sherwood PCT, I think) and less than a week later I was off for my check up.

Nice receptionist checked how they could contact me - post, email, text, voicemail etc - and whether they could inform my GP (No, thanks) then it was into a discreet waiting room. Called to see the doctor less than 10 minutes later, a quick chat about my sexual history and preferred habits, then the full suite of tests and out.

I called the automated results line (they issue you with a PIN number) about a week later - all clear!!

Thanks for the gen chaps. So my research shows you can just walk in to St. Peters in Leicester, though you might have to wait up to 2 hours.  External Link/Members Only  Anyone else tried the walk-in!

Suit me not making an appointment as I can pick a quiet time at work and not have to tell too many porkies. Ironically this is on Sparkenhoe street. Remember driving up there in the 80s looking for street girls!

GUM clinic at LRI closed/moved to St Peters around 2013/2014. Too close for comfort so have to tread extra carefully, as I gre up not far from there  ;)

Appointments can be made in advance for certain times (avoid Fridays 5pm~7pm sessions... Males Only  :scare:), unless of course you want to bump into other punters).

For walk-in sessions, I recommend getting there earlier than their opening times, that way you get seen soon after they have opened.

My first, RLD street pick-up in mid-80s was right opposite this clinic, where there was a a Ladbrokes Shop on the corner of Lincoln Street(?).

Although East Midlands is not my area, if the clinics are anything like London and Home Counties, a quiet time at work might not be long enough for a walk-in clinic.

I have walked out of clinics in Reading and St Albans because they were so busy. In St Albans I had already waited over an hour, busting for a pee, and not even got anywhere near the front of the queue. I returned the next day and there were only 2 people in the waiting room and was out in just over an hour. This is the ONLY time I have not had to make a half day excursion!

You 'might' get lucky visiting a walk-in, but most likely, you will need a VERY quiet day at work!

It's walk in and appointments. I always get there there for 8am so I'm first in the queue when the doors open. It's seperate areas for men and women. As I get there early I go straight in with no waiting around but you do have to ask for throats swabs as they don't offer them as standard
I also suggest if mentioning you see Sex workers refuse when they say they will get someone to chat with you or you will be stuck for ages with some old nurse going on and on about the pitfalls of paying for sex
Otherwise they are very good. They have morning and afternoon sessions but at lunchtime it is for appointments only

Thanks Dani. Good tip there on avoiding the nurse's pep talk too. I'll tell them my sex therapist advised me to see prostitutes to overcome my fear of deep holes  :D

Yes, mate. A blood sample is the standard test for HIV and syphilis. I suppose you could refuse this and opt only for the urine tests and swabs? It's risk and reward like the rest of this game! Do your activities put you at risk? Which is easier to explain to the OH: a bruise or a dose of something nasty? Perhaps you could say you've donated blood...

I use City Hospital in Nottingham. Appointment in advance is normally best but they can see you same day.
Waiting time has been mixed, last week i was in and out within less than half hour other times its been over 2.

The staff are ok, ask a lot of prying questions but fuck it.  Be careful how you ask for communication tho. Ive had appointment reminders sent via text which luckily i received and deleted without the OH seeing. (Just says city hospital, not GUM)

Hidden Image/Members Only Derby London Road Community Hospital

WGs
Friendly nurses and a specialist, sizes 12 - 14, one really pretty milf; polite, warm, intelligent, not too intrusive

Comms
Walked in mid morning; told the earliest without an appointment would be 5pm. Agreed to come back then, but filled in a personal details and sexual history form first.

Venue
Decent parking, pay-on-exit, free if less than half hour. Inside excellent sign posting to the sexual health clinic. Refreshments available.

Meeting
Arrived 20 mins early and was seen about 10 minutes early. Check of personal details I'd provided on the form. Asked about sexual behaviour, also on the form. Explained my last sexual contact was with a Hungarian, at the weekend, and I'd had 8 sexual partners in the last three months including abroad. I said yes when asked if I'd ever paid for sex. She asked when was the last time I'd paid. I said Saturday, with the Hungarian. I heard the penny drop.

After the intros first up I opted for the glass rod in your cock end for chlamydia and gonorrhea detection. This is optional since blood and urine work for this too, but the results come in minutes instead of days. Not pleasant but quickly and professionally done. This was followed by urine test and blood test for hepatitis and HIV. After a small amount of pee delivered in cubicle I was led to the waiting room. 10 minutes later I was called for a hepatitis vacination which I'd opted for - small prick, painless. Then the result were in: chlamydia and gonorrhea all clear. The other results would be texted (I'd specified this) in up to 10 days. I booked a return in a month for hepatitis vaccination part 2. On leaving I removed the swabs taped to my arm! Total time - 45 approx minutes.

General
A lot easier than I thought, though I think next time I'll get an appointment. And despite her gaining a picture of my sexual behaviour, they did not judge, lecture or change their attitude toward me. The main clinician herself was, I'd guess, an Eastern European.

Excellent services and great value for money - the NHS delivers, and quite rightly, as preventative work saves millions.

I accessed the service anonymously, giving a false name, DoB, address and using my punting phone. Warning - you get asked this several times, so remember it - especially your name!

A positive experience made all the better since the all clear was given 2 working days later. Good to be offered and receive the hepatitis vaccination as I'd worried about this. Finally, thanks to like-minded UKP posters for keeping this, as well as all the juicy new fannies, on my radar.

I have always been led to believe that a full all clear was only after full test results by text, has this changed now? Good write up though chap and very informative for the guys that are worried about being tested.

If you are honest and tell them that you partake of pro$$ies they DO NOT give you a FULL all clear. It can take months after exposure for some STI's to show up !!!!

They tell you that you are OK, or not as the case maybe, at the time of testing.

Same story with me I usually walk in there too and take my chances on the wait.
I'd say I average at an hour in/out

There's also the option about texts, I ask them to call as I find it easier, the OH is used to me constantly on the phone for business so me walking out the room to talk isn't odd, they withheld the number also last time.

I've never admitted to sex with prossies, just mention I met an ex that had lots of partners and the condom broke, so they test for everything.

I've used that story the last 4 times I'm sure they know it's bollox

Personally ill stick to the clinic as I don't think this covers the full spectrum of infections.

Just a note on the Leicester GUM clinic at St Peters Health Center, visited a month ago and they DID send my GP a letter about my visit and i did NOT consent to it. I only know they sent the letter as i went to my GP to see if i had a UTI and and when on his PC he asked if my symptoms could be linked to my recent visit to the GUM clinic, his screen is viewable from where i sit and i saw the scanned letter on his screen. I don't have an issue with my GP knowing but just informing you that i didn't consent & nor did i not consent to info being shared and i don't recall being asked this, however when GUM was run out of LRI i remember them asking for consent. There is also a possibility that i blindly ticked a check box saying yes, so if you need to be discreet just double check before doing anything.

Try to use one which is SIMILAR to your real DoB:

E.g. For myself, I usually use the 1st of the same month, same year (i.e. 01, Real Month, Real Year).

Another one to use is 1st of Jan, same year (although I suspect the clinic will clock on, judging by the number of punters born on the 1st of Jan).

If pushed for name and address, again be prepared.... use a common surname, and for your address add or subtract a set number from your real address, that way the address appears to flow out smoothly when requested (including the Post Code), or use one of the popular roads in your City.

Bump - as important thread and I can add.
Since moving Northwards, I have used Bassetlaw Tri-Health in Worksop for my checks. Got the lecture first time from wizened old biddy who looked like she not had sex in decades. Since then all pretty quick (I cut the lecture short by stating that I knew what I was doing and am responsible which is why I am there).

For people who want to get tested for STD'S in the Derbyshire region you can now get a NHS home testing kit for free. Not so good if your not single living with the wife/partner but if you have a punting phone and a works address you can use to send the kit to your sorted :)

In the Midlands you can go to a sexual health clinic (wish) and pick up a home testing kit. It is All in there urine and blood tests , even a plaster !
So might be worth checking this avenue out to see if this is available in the east miss clinics ? They txt you the results .  :angelgirl:

I used the Derby clinic a short while ago (London road). In and out in 20 minutes. I filled all the forms in, and stated I'd had sex with a Polish girl, protected but oral wasn't. They did blood and urine tests for me, which came back within three days (all clear).
Whilst there the nurse who took my blood said that Derby had seen a massive growth of infectious diseases, particularly within certain communities. When pressed, she said it was Roma and Africans that were becoming infected :hi:

Visited the GUM clinic at Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield in March and June External Link/Members Only. Made bookings and was seen on time, in and out within about 30 minutes, later visit was because one infection can take up to 3 months to show up in blood test.  Everything was clear.
Would recommend, quite non-judgemental.

If you live in Derbyshire, google "SH24 Derby", which, as a local health initiative, is a mail-in STI service which can be anonymous.

Obv, you have to give address info, and a mobile for the results, but its good, quick and simple.

I've never been sent a text either way. They always say that they only text if there's an issue (Leicester LRI and St P). I've called a couple of times to see results after a couple of weeks and they give an all clear there so I'm happy to take their word for it re the text. There is a fairly odd doctor there though who LOVES telling me how much syphilis there is in leicester. Last time I went there was a female student doctor who had a training gander. She was quite cute which helped me battle the cold shall we say!
