Author Topic: When WG turn up on your facebook's "people you may know"!  (Read 2915 times)

Offline mace-window

Well I was on facebook recently and I decided to check the "People you may know" list for once out of curiously.

When looking, I saw a WG on there I recognize who I had an great punt with couple of months ago  :scare:

I don't know how facebook link me to her. We share no friends in common or no other connection at all. How could that happen? Can facebook use your call history to dig out potential friends?
Has anyone experienced this and if so how can you stop this from happening again?

Thanks.

The algorithms that Facebook and Google use are obviously very sophisticated.

You may have a punting/burner phone but chances are you've got your smartphone nearby which means metadata such as geolocations etc are stored. Metadata is more than just using google maps - it's the phones GPS, or its the nearby WiFi signals that you don't even connect to but are open enough to broadcast location, or its gsm triangulation, or its the hundreds of millions of lines of code which run your phone. There is no escaping it. It might be that you have a contactless card stored on your phone (apple pay/android pay) they'll not even need to request access thru the phone - the app will report where you were fucking standing.

Facebook (both app and allowing cookies from browser access) collect, use, access this data and cross reference it with other people to create these links.

You might say, by my smartphone was at home whilst I was there, or I was in aeroplane mode...but this is you vs the words most technically gifted coders/developers etc...they'll find a way.

Given that they've matched you with people in this way already - it proves that they've got what they need about you. So in answer to your Q, maybe they used your last dialed list, or they read your texts...but they've got a shit load more incriminating evidence than that to link you to this person.

Fucking great  :dash:.
Fuck you Mark Zuckerberg.
So I can't do anything now apart from getting a punter's phone?

Offline Anadin

I doubt it's having your punting phone nearby your main phone is enough to cause it to link you two otherwise I'd be linked to people within my household and I never am. Doing things like logging into google on my PC and then searching for stuff or looking at someone's profile on facebook or twitter while logged in to your main account on say twitter or facebook too is what 'linked' me with various pornstars and escorts. If you really don't want it to happen seperate everything and look at privacy settings.

Offline BP96

It seems like you're using your regular phone and have also connected Facebook with your phone number.

Offline Steve2

As you said Mace

So I can't do anything now apart from getting a punter's phone?

They have linked your phone number to hers as you  both have your numbers linked to your Facebook accounts

Chances are she's searched your number on Facebook and looked at your profile. Facebook then thinks you might know each other and suggests you could be friends.

As for punting phones? Everyone operates their punting life differently. I personally use my own phone and have for years. I tried a punting phone and it was just something else I had to hide. You have to work it around what works best for you.

It has happened to me and I don't have a smartphone -------------- I may have used the same E-Mail address for the facebook account to contact the pro$$ie.     :unknown: :unknown: :unknown: :unknown:

At the moment I would say the main worry is, this girl will also see you on her "people you may know list" too. So the question is. Can you trust her? Do you have people on your friends list who she could cause damge with.

There has been a recent case in the north east of a girl contacting a punters girlfriend via facebook just to out him to her as he booked her and then didn't go through with the booking.

If so, deactivate your facebook account.

The two most likely reasons this has happened is

1. You have put your punting phone number into facebook for password recovery reasons
2. You have used the facebook app on your punting phone.

Get an old school cheap PAYG phone and you will not have this problem. Using a smartphone as a punting phone is not a good idea. Also is your registration AW email the same as you fbook email?

Be careful out there...

A WG recently posted here on UKP that where possible she DOES check out her punters on Facebook, if she has linked their mobile number or email address to their Facebook account :scare:

She didn't think there was anything wrong with that.  :dash:

I will try and dig out the thread.

That is just creepy from her. Certainly a WG to avoid as she could use that against punters if she ever gave them a bad service or wasted their time, and they reported it.

Offline redmist81

Because you have text her off the same phone you are accessing face book with an have her number / or a text from her in your phone

It's happened to me as a WG, but I just ignore of course (& would expect the same courtesy).

Offline mace-window

Thanks for the advise guys. From what I gather is that somehow the facebook app decide to use my phone’s location or contacts to suggest new friends. I have also put my facebook settings to private and increase my privacy when I first got my facebook profile. Also I never put my number on my facebook profile, so I am more puzzled by this. Either way I have not contacted the WG at all and plan not to in the future though I know her real name now which is weird. I hope she does the same as well.

Time to get a new phone I guess.

Offline mace-window

Nope. It was all on Adultwork and UKE.

I don't have friends on my list she could damage me with or have a girlfriend at this moment lucky. Though I don't think this WG will do that as she is quite popular here so doing that would ruin her business.

It's not necessarily about the phone number. That's one of God only knows how many different reference points they use.

As I said, the algorithms they use to determine this shit are more sophisticated than phone numbers. Look at the Facebook app and the permissions it requires. Read the Facebook's cookie policy. Once you start realising how much access youre giving them, and the depth of information youre handing over for free - you might start to understand what they do.

Keep in mind, Facebook own WhatsApp $19bn purchase and Instagram $3bn purchase. Theyre not fucking about. You don't need to link your mobile number to your account, they've figured out a way to know more about you than you can remember. Think about how long you've been using those applications and the content that is buried away deep in archives.

Indeed, they could know more about a person than their own family and friends, this is what people are agreeing to whether they know it, agree with it or not. Personally I don't believe a word these tech giants say about so called privacy, total bollocks, if it suits them they don't give a shit about that.

Offline Gordon Bennett

I got badgered into putting WhatsApp on my phone last week to stay in touch with my sister abroad for a few days about an ongoing family crisis. Anyway, it freaked me out when little icons/graphics for many of my existing contacts, including WGs, popped up. Fucking hell! Deleted that app pretty pronto I can tell you. I'm fairly relaxed about punting but no way would I go on social media again.... Luckily I'm part of the old fart generation who is content with writing letters and phoning people (plus I only have a couple of friends, well I say friends but they're probably people I just know a bit)!
