The news of Jeffrey Archer’s death reminded me of the scandal in the late 1980s, when he denied newspaper reports that he had visited a prostitute in London. He sued the Daily Star for libel and won £500,000 in damages. More than a decade later, while he was campaigning to become Mayor of London, it emerged that his alibi had been fabricated. He was subsequently convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice, and sentenced to four years in prison.

It made me wonder: if he had neither admitted nor denied the allegation, declined to discuss his private life and simply moved on, would the scandal eventually have faded? It might still have cost him his political position at the time, but did his determination to clear his name ultimately do far more damage than the original allegation ever could?

Is this not political?

I never mentioned politics - he was a public figure who got caught using a prostitute.

"still have cost him his political position at the time,"  :unknown:

Why have you posted in the general discussion section, what's it got to do with punting?

But she was very much alive when Archer committed perjury over whether he used her services or not

Ringo Starr seems to have figured him out fairly quick

At the interval I went to the toilet, and there beside me was Ringo Starr. He asked if I knew this Jeffrey Archer bloke. I said everyone in Oxford was trying to work out who he was. Ringo said: "He strikes me as a nice enough fella, but he's the kind of bloke who would bottle your piss and sell it

Didn’t like him as a politician or as a man, but he was a good story teller- he wrote some good books!
