Author Topic: Noticing inflation  (Read 3007 times)

I have to admit. I don’t usually keep an eye on prices of stuff.
Yes I’m aware money isn’t worth as much today as it was a few years back etc etc.

Plus of course I tend to raise an eyebrow when I see that a SP I’ve seen before. Has raised her fee up by £100 and hour…….. or more even. But of course that increase may be more business plan than actual index linking  :D

Anyway. I’m digressing as usual.
So I see a certain lass for what is always a very nice edging, tease session of sorts and she messages me to apologise. Asking if I could pop into a chemist and buy the tingle gel she uses during out meets.
No worries I say, not a problem.

So I’m looking at the various products on the durex shelf and pick up the small tube. It’s £10.
Bloody hell I’m thinking. Last time I bought it (can’t for the life of me remember when ) I think it was under a fiver.

BTW….. there’s no point to this post. Just me musing.  :D

A 30-gm packet of sterling essential tobacco, two weeks ago was £19.00, is now priced at £21.30, increase of £2.30.  Other cigarettes have gone up by similar prices

Condoms too. Unless you’re buying in bulk and online (or using the free ones) it has perhaps doubled in price for the decent brands. Think how many we get through and now they are £8 a box in Boots unless 2 for 1

Just the price of doing business I suppose  ;)

I stocked up on condoms with 3 x 144 condom packs with £15 a box. That should last me 6 months. They're cheap on Amazon.

Christmas decorations. Party balloons cheaper than a pack of 20. Lol.

I did once try shagging my way through a box of 144 in 6 months. I wasn't up to the challenge.

Amazon are doing 24 condoms for £7.99 or 12 for £9.99.

On 30 October the duty on 30g of hand rolling tobacco increased by £2.32. Perhaps you've only just noticed.

I think it's less inflation and more opportunism. A £100 increase is mega. I've noticed perhaps a roughly ten percent increase in the last two years in average wg cost which is about in line with inflation.

The issue is they seem to all share a set pricing. 100, 120, 140, 180, 200, 220, 250, 300, 350, 400, 500. It's non linear and when they bump their price it can sometimes mean a 25% increase.

You brought escort prices into it   :dash:  I don't know anyone on here who isn't sick of people moaning about prices SP's charge, it's pointless and boring, if one charges too much find a cheaper one.

The OP mentioned how much a tube of gel had gone up, not the price the escort charged.

Biscuits - seem to be getting smaller and smaller but staying the same price.  This should be debated in Parliament

You’re gonna have to forgive me for this. But like an idiot I’ve obviously posted this in the wrong section. It really should be in the Off Topic.

Sigh…… but anyway. As I’m chatting a load of rubbish I thought I’d add.

I’m off to the West End today. So as usual, before the journey.  I’ve popped into the pub near the station. Don’t fancy a pint so a large Pinot Grigio will do. At £3-45 it’s an ok price.

Funny how I will no doubt stop off for a post punt glass of the same in a few hours time and it will be nearly a tenner.
I do laugh about it with the lass I’m going to see and as she doesn’t drink. She thinks I’m mad  :D

Read his second paragraph, or are we only supposed to respond to the post title?

The first paragraph was not the point of the thread as "Anyway. I’m digressing as usual." denotes and you were the only one to mention escort prices after that.

Thanks, I know I can make any off topic comment then as long as I dismiss it.

All of this of course is in jest. I was aghast at the cost of a local holiday in the UK and the fact I can get twice the time in Greece. Ergo, inflation in the UK is twice as bad as med Europe!

You can try to be a smart arse and start talking about escort prices if you like or you can stick to the topic being discussed on this thread which is inflation in general.

But I did talk about inflation? Why does it cost so much more to holiday here than abroad? What is it about the UK that makes things more expensive?

I'm a non smoker, but I've read the black market in tobacco is worth something like £3 billion. You can see people smoking counterfeit tobacco in every city. I would actually be in favour of a price freeze. There's also a possible ban on disposable vapes opening up another black market

I know it’s a daft thing to say. But if you’re a heavy smoker…. How the hell do you afford it. My bruv is a dedicated 25-30 a day bloke.
He’s got plenty of money so it’s not a problem. But it just frightens me to think all that cash going up in smoke  :D

It's down to priorities. It's £150 a week say, what's that a day's work for some people, a fancy meal out, a few gigs or football matches.

Remember, inflation is not the cost of things going up, it is the devaluation of the currency we have and use.

It's a very subtle, but very important difference.

I've not felt prices going up, because I've managed to grow my income and wealth at a quicker rate than inflation over the last few years.

I would imagine a lot of us on here have done the same my friend. But it still does not stop me thinking WTF. When I notice the Mars Bar I’ve just eaten only took three bites.  :D

A simple example, a few weeks ago went into " The Works" shop to buy a notepad it only cost £1 . The other day went into the same shop to buy another one and it now costs £1.50 a 50% increase, how do they justify that  :unknown:

Inflation is reasonably low at the moment but people are still feeling the effects from 2-3 years ago when it shot up, I remember saying about a year ago how IMO my food shop had increased by about 50% in the previous 2 years

Offline PepeMAGA

Interestingly protein powder has gone down in price to pre high inflation levels. It probably went up 50% not long after COVID, but now seems to have dropped down again. I guess to be competitive the different manufacturers will drop as low as they can

I do know that during covid and in the aftermath when it was still "a thing" people were concerned about their health and demand for vitamin and other health type products shot up.
The price hike back then would have been due to the classic supply and demand forces along with a general issue / problem in shortages of supplies throughout the worldwide trading network

Good that some things have actually come down as once the price goes up it tends to stay there, perhaps a downturn in demand coupled with an increase in supply has brought it down  :unknown:

As you say it depends on the manufacturers. Stuff were it is a big brand like USN have pretty much stayed the same while premium brands like Huel has always been expensive IMO.

I agree. People forget some people charged £20 for 4 toilet rolls during lockdown. IMO some things were way underpriced for a long time eggs, milk, butter etc. Something like olive oil is now overpriced, but it seems to have stabilised. I think there's going to be a further increase on coffee and milk in the new year.

Already happening with chocolate of any derivative.

A friends severely disabled daughter will only drink Cadbury drinking Chocolate, try buying it .

She eventually found some on Ama***n , 4 times the price that she normally pays in the supemarket, her MIL searched loads of smaller shops, found 4 small jars, more expensive than the supermarket obviously, but cheaper than the mail order lot .

didn't  Cadbury's drink chocolate have a major recall about a month or two ago? That would have led to major shortages and (hopefully only temporary) high prices?

Coffee prices will rise substantially because Vietnamese and Brazilian yields have both been hit by crazy wet weather.

Those that denigrate climate change activists will have no grounds for complaint.
