Youtube changes to videos looks horrible

What on earth has youtube done to all or most of the video content, you can watch, to me it looks horrible

So from the screen shot, anyone else getting same

same for me but you can have it on full screen or theatre mode to avoid this

The above photo looks nothing like what I see. Is it a screengrab from a phone?
I watch it on a 27 inch screen. YouTube has not changed anything. I use the default mode, not the theatre mode. A click on the box at the bottom right will change it to full screen and back. Its a lot better with a dark background IMO.
