I had the honour of briefly meeting Sir Gary at Edgbaston over 20 years ago, ahead of an England - West Indies test match. We were in the same queue and he was just ahead of me. He was an absolute gentleman to his core and as a cricket player at semi-pro level and a cricket fan I was genuinely star struck. We spoke for about 2 minutes and during that time it was as if speaking to me was the most important part of his day. People were walking past, pointing at doing the old “oh look, it’s so and so” and when Sir Gary went on his way, other people in the queue were asking me how I knew him.
Rest In Peace, Sir Garfield Sobers.
